I think the best way I've heard someone sum it up is "When people say they want to be famous, they're really just saying they want to feel respected." Notoriety without respect is miserable. I had a brief 15 minutes of fame like 6 or 7 years ago (nothing too big outside of a niche community thing) and had a few people give me an uncomfortable amount of compliments, and I'm like "oh... so that's what that feels like." And YET, I often try to put myself out there, because I want to try to be part of a community where I'm seen as making a positive impact. Not really wanting to gain a following so much as just.... I guess, as you said, "be seen." To be able to say that I was there and participating, and to be able to feel like people enjoyed me being there. I dunno where I'm going with this, but this video and the one about competitive accomplishments have been very thought provoking for me, so thank you!

No one wants to be famous, they want to be underground. I'm a big fish in possibly the smallest pond imaginable (competitive Tableturf), and it's great. I've made friends, I have respect from my peers, and only around 10 or so people care. All things in moderation.

One point is that when no one knows you, you mostly get to choose who you talk to. When you're famous, you may gain followers who love you but also others who dislike everything about yourself for little to no reason

One of the things touched on in this video that didn't get fully extrapolated on is Parasocial Interaction. And it's actually a really big part of becoming internet famous. Gem talked about how engagement is asymmetrical with you watching (hundreds of) hours of your favorite streamer but they probably only ever see you for a few seconds once or twice when you actually go up to them at an event like a con or a meet'n'greet if they're from the entertainment world that does that. And there was also Ludwig's comment "I am not your friend." And that's the core of Parasocial Interaction. It's the disproportionate relationship where fans feel like friends of their favorite actor/content creator/musician/etc and the famous person really has no clue who they are. And the algorithm that determines what content is successful, and what gets pushed onto your feed or onto the frontpage of RU-vid or whatever is looking for fans engaging with the creator's content, which is inherently parasocial in nature. So creators that are becoming famous streaming or uploading RU-vid videos are often the ones that are nurturing these parasocial relationships. And it's not that content creators are terrible human beings that switch off and hate their fans or don't care at all. A lot of them are probably genuine, caring people when they're off. But they physically cannot care. There is not enough time or emotional energy for every single fan's feelings or life. It's like the difference between a grade school teacher that might have hundreds of students across their class to a college professor who might have thousands a semester. And then scale that up to millions for some of these streamers. And then if they do have the foolhardy idea of trying to care about everyone and everything. There won't be enough emotional energy, and there certainly won't be any left over for themselves. And that leads to burnout which can lead to resenting their audience. Outside of giving the support they need to stay successful, one of the biggest things you can do for your favorite content creator is just be kind and a decent human being. Remember that they didn't know you before you spoke to them, and five minutes after you're done speaking they probably won't remember you.

And yes, this is also dating advice. People like being treated as people, so treat them for being the people that they are.

I love this video because it reminds me when the schedule has changed and our teacher hasn't got a lesson fully prepared so we enter into a deep class discussion about some tangentially related topic and come away having learnt something important and grown a little as people :]

I remember artists on Twitter and Instagram saying "You need to curate your social media to become a brand so you'll be recognized and get jobs." In a lot of ways, that's true, but it's also dehumanizing. I think there's a fine line between curating and owning a brand, but not BEING one. A brand owes its consumers something marketable and consumable. A person does not. I used to be super active on social media myself until I started creeping towards 10k followers. The idea that 10-thousand strangers were now reading (and possibly misinterpreting and bad faithing) anything I posted got me to curate myself a lot more, out of personal safety and just straight up privacy.

I know that giving people redundant, superfluous praise is somewhat the focus of this video, but i still feel the need to express how much I like your writing. It's probably the most overlooked aspect of this sort of space (RU-vid, video essays, etc) and I find your videos charming, refreshing, and frankly good and easy to watch. Your choice of vocabulary in particular is very refreshing. It's well thought out, but not overly verbose and alienating; probably a remnant of your teaching. I understand that this sort of thing is passe and expected of an English teach and this level of care is probably just your normal standard for yourself, but I appreciate nonetheless.

though i do really like hearing your input on splatoon, i really love hearing about your takes on things that aren't as related to splatoon or can be applicable in other areas of life too. i love these kinds of videos. keep it up PS: this is ironic given the context of the video, but seeing you become a pretty big figure in the competitive splatoon space over the past few years has been really cool to see. at this point, my own brother has found and has been really been enjoying your content :]

This is so good. This video helped me cope with the feeling of being exhausted after speaking to over +50 different people in my social media whenever I upload a post. And most of them aren't people from my family or people who I haven't seen in the last 2 years due to the pandemic!!! Or since finishing my university course. I just want to give a big hug to them, but now I understand that if I become popular is better to stick to a smaller group of friends...

I 100% understand the ideas being presented. I personally enjoy it when I have fame regardless of the indivdual connections I make, at the end of the day, my personal goal is to make large groups of people happy, so I just hope to do that the best I can.

I love how you just casually release videos like this, showing what it means to be a decent person ( outside of the game too). It's so wonderful to me because I was drawn in by the (excellent) splatoon content. But I stay because of this maturity you have (while still being fun and silly, never change that), to remind us all of our responsibilities to each other as people. For me this makes your channel so much better. It's so very comforting to know that someone online is not only good at for example playing splatoon or streaming, but is also a reasonable person. It makes me feel way better about consuming their content. Sure, not everyone is going to make as great dating-/life-/splatoon-advice videos as you do, but I feel like if more people online who have a following were only half as mature as you, the world would be so much better already. As someone who is also a Michael Jackson fan, I can easily agree that being famous is painful and a massive struggle. There’s the risk of parasocial relationships, distrust, betrayal, obsession, and people just biding their time to defame you and make accusations. Being famous can be scary and limits your ability to be appreciated as a person rather than what you did that one time. I want to be loved and appreciated for my art and me as a person, not for that one random video of playing some instrument in a game and somehow blew up.

This video basically highlights why that, unless I’m getting an autograph or some other event where you meet a celebrity, I’ll try my best to ignore them. Idk, it just makes me feel less like I’m intruding on their personal time by talking with them while they’re in work mode and try my best to be respectful. If you want an example… I’d never email a RU-vidr with their personal email to say “omg your so kewl”, I comment on videos as my way of interacting while a RU-vidr is in “work mode” even if they never see it. Idk how well that works in practice, but it’s how I see it as a fan.

This is such a refreshing video topic and it reminds me of every reason to thank myself for separating my competitive and casual ventures in the Splatoon community from my brand as a working artist. I remember starting out not super long ago with tournaments and whatnot having used the same name in game and every time I would solo queue one night, I would be sent screencaps in Twitter DMs like "is this you?" and it'd usually be my L's (unfortunate) and like- it would usually be something in admiration and not something meant to be hostile but you're extremely correct- after the 10th time or so, I don't really feel positive things about being recognized. I just wanted to relax that night and instead I kind of get too caught up in messages which is partially my fault for having them open on request in the first place. For a brief time, I even shared a few personal artworks on my main account as well as some details about my Splatoon team and what we were doing competitively and such and while it wasn't the same traction as usual- I got this feeling in my gut that sharing all wasn't really going to be overall positive. Even neutral comments on things that were just a tad overfamiliar started to get to me. I started feeling like I perceived MYSELF to be hostile when it came to having an internally negative reaction to strangers admiring things that were closer to me than what I'd usually post. Since then, I have changed my IGN to something I still like but isn't as recognizable as "hey that's that artist on Twitter" because that's not really something I want to interact with strangers about. The "I'm on the job now" feeling just Happens. The group of people I play Splatoon with the most now might know my Twitter or other soc med but none of them started by knowing me that way and it makes a huge difference. I share random doodles and memes and like- the most unfinished artwork and ideas with them and them only because the feedback that I get from a handful of people I care about FAR outweighs the feeling of being perceived by thousands of faceless strangers online. And while there's still part of me that gets the feeling that the way I look at this (which logically, I think is much healthier) is somewhat ungrateful (because I really do appreciate having an audience and getting traction of the projects I post)- I still find it to be better than pretending to not be utterly exhausted by the idea that a majority of the interpersonal relationships I can form will start with the other person already having an idea in their head of who I might be. So, thank you for this- as soon as I looked at the title of this video, I knew it was going to be something I wouldn't be able to pause and I was correct. I think bringing this kind of phenomenon to light is important.

That's a great way of describing things, I definitely am in a place where I know I wouldn't ever want to be famous. I use to work with kids at an after school center & there's a presence I had to maintain while there, sometimes it was very difficult wearing a fake smile like this one day when on my way in, I stopped in the convenience store down the street since it was a hot day & I take public transportation to get around so I wanted to pick up a drink to have in my bag inside the staff room in case I needed to drink something. While in there, I ran into someone I cut contact with for information I won't disclose but I was shaken about it, it's bad enough to where I got into work, I reported it to the manager because he did something that means he shouldn't be anywhere near kids & the parents that pressed charges dropped them for some unknown reason, I didn't press in asking about it because a good friend of mine was close to the case & it caused him a lot of stress & I didn't want him to think about it at all. Pretty much, I was in panic mode, it was like the time when I was a chaperone on the annual camping trip & all the adults knew about a bear siting but we couldn't tell the kids & had to act cool even though we were all shaken up. I just had to go through that whole day acting all peachy & it is super exhausting. I told my friend about it afterwards & she offered a drinking Splatoon night actually, it was a great night where we'd each have a drink, usually cider, & jumped into turf war while in a call together. Took my mind off of things. I've had experiences where I ran into kids from work out in public & instantly, I had to act the same way I did at work, I also tried my best to just give them a slight acknowledgement & move on since we're not allowed to interact with them outside of work & I rather stick to the rule, it's really awkward trying to be nice but still trying to shake them off, especially at things like when I ran into some kids at a night market, I was there to try some fun food, watch a show, & shop around so we were going to be within the same area for a few hours & I didn't want to leave just because they were there, I was there to enjoy the event so I was a little on edge the whole time of seeing them again which did happen a couple times but I was as in character as I could be despite the nervousness. There was also another time when I didn't realize there were kids from work because they were kids I don't work directly with, usually I was with the 4th & 5th graders but before homeroom, I'd work in the art room which has a blend of kids from all the classes so I don't always know everyone that's in there but there is usually a typical art crowd. I don't think the kids recognized me either since nobody said anything, this was on the light rail in my city & it was far away from where I worked too, I lived outside of this city on the west end, where I worked was a city that's also on the west side but even father away from the city I worked in from this city & where I boarded was the same place all the kids boarded, they were with two adults which seemed to be like some sort of weekend care people, they were watching the kids as apart of their job & where we boarded was the east side of the river but not out towards east, it's really hard to explain this without saying where I lived but it's just far enough away to where I did not expect to see anyone from work there. On board the light rail, some drunk guy with a bunch of bottles of beer got on & he was like "heyyy, you want sommme???" to the people around where I was sitting, it was pretty much the two adults with a big group of kids & me, one guy stood up & in a very professional voice talked to the man, telling him that he can't bring that around the kids & respectfully asked him to go to the other side of the car so he left & down the ways like a few minutes later, a hear a bunch of guys singing the "Hey Tony" Frosted Flakes song from the older commercials, very off key, I think he might of found some other drunk guys on there & it pretty much exploded into a fist fight somehow & I could not keep my cool, I was terrified & trying my best to remain calm but I could not, I even called my mom & had her talk to me to keep me calm but I was just losing it. They ended up having to stop, the cops got involved, & all this stuff. That week at work, some kids in the art room was like, "hey, I remember you! You were on the train when the fist fight happened!" I was so embarrassed at that time because I did not act professional like that guy, I just kinda lost it & got scared, I was terrified that she would tell the other kids & it would circulate to the kids I regularly work as well as other staff & someone would say something to me. Thankfully, it didn't happen. It's something I have been aware of, I made a video years ago, it only got like 4k views but back then in a Toontown community, that was enough. It spread misinformation about something going on in game & the toon I played as for the video was recognized enough to where I had to delete the character. Thankfully, I didn't have anything important on it, was something I made as a means to clone my friend's main toon, kinda jokingly doing twins & I needed the space anyways. It was only like two or three people that said things to me, one talking about how what I said has them too scared about their account getting hacked (long story) & another that was saying I should delete the video because I talked about the wrong person, those are like the top interactions in my mind & I just didn't want to deal with it so deleting the toon was best course of action. I have another account that was a shared thing with a friend, most videos got 100-300 views which for me is much more preferred, I was recognized only one time in game on the toon I featured in my side of the videos & it was a very wholesome one where the guy told me they wanted to see more videos from me. This is why I'm happy just doing my own thing. I enjoyed working with kids but it was stressful worrying about seeing them outside of work or whenever something in my life was going bad, I had to leave it at home. Make videos for an MMO? If someone sees you in game, you might be walking on egg shells. I try my best to be respectful around famous people, sometimes I get super awkward about it & one time, I accidentally insulted someone's videos to their face. It was during regionals, I use to do Pokemon TCG competitively, I was facing off against a youtuber, I won't disclose who but like at the time, I didn't recognize him because I don't pay attention to the people that make the videos at all, I remember them for their decks, not what they look like because I typically watch to get an idea on how certain decks work so I'll know roughly how to counter them. Well, I somewhat recognized his deck but there were techs in there that were new to me so I kept complimenting him & how it ran, I was super into it like I really enjoyed playing against it but then was like, "I remember seeing *place name here* do a video on a similar deck but I don't usually pay attention to his stuff since his style doesn't exactly appeal to me." Not only was it him but he had on a shirt with his channel name on it & after my match, my friend was waiting near by for me to finish, he approached my opponent instead of me & asked him for an autograph & that's when it clicked on who it was, I face palmed. That was probably the worst thing I said to someone that was somewhat famous & I still feel bad about it to this day.

Famous people are people! It's in the phrase! It's hard in the moment but treat them like what they are, because barring other circumstances you are strangers to eachother. So be courteous, be kind and most of all, treat them as people, not characters. On a slightly less serious note, that was the most complicated way Gem could have told us not to send him a thousand Splatoon plushies at every opportunity. Unfortunately for Gem, I have financial freedom and I will make sure he cannot close his eyes without seeing the imprint of an inkling. >:]

I have never quite been able to express why it rubs me the wrong way when people tell celebrities "[song/book/thing you made] got me through [horrific personal tragedy/saved my life]". Especially since those are all perfectly valid roles for art to play in your life, and perfectly fine to be open about. It's one thing to not be able to muster up enthusiasm for general pleasantries and compliments, I have to imagine it feels _not great_ to find yourself desensitized to that.

Bit of a personal anecdote on the thing about becoming desensitized to praise if it happens enough. There is a way to counteract this *somewhat,* though it's not exactly a fun one. If you just *generally* have anxiety about failure and just "not being good enough" (like me), then praise and support just about always has an impact, even in areas where it happens frequently.

I've a similar feeling about a certain drawing I posted a while ago. It was exciting to see it blow up at first, but eventually I moved on to new things and would rather have people pay attention to my new works instead. Still, I'm not anything close to famous and I'm glad for that

Coming from my perspective I think this is something that I inherently don't do, I've made friends with some "famous" people, like some youtubers I won't mention, but I don't see them as "OMG YOU ARE THE GUY WHO DID X!!!!" I see them as my friend who has a really cool job, with some downsides like the major one mentioned here. I always, always treat people well and on equal footing, I never put myself down in comparison to them, because part of it is a power dynamic, a fan is a typically subservient social role, and ofc that makes people uncomfortable, having everyone bend over backwards for you, makes you get an imposter syndrome almost. I almost never bring up random job crap beyond "hey how is work with the channel?" like I'd ask my friend working at a McDonald's how their work has been. And guess what? They enjoy that they are treated as the a person and not a celebrity. Dehumanizing people is awful, so why is their a culture based around dehumanizing people into merely icons or a single work they have done.

My Minecraft player was in DanTDMs minecraft minigame video when I was 11 (im 19 now) and that was like the first interaction like that, and probably still the biggest. I was beyond hyped in that moment, then a video released some time after. That was in a time before youtube had streaming so you'd have no idea when they would be playing. After that I've been in quite a few videos/streams and had over 100 of different hypixel youtube ranks in the same game/lobby (common req for that rank is 30k subs), or a youtuber having read my comment for a video. I've kinda become unfazed by these interactions through having them. If I or something I made is in a video that's nice, but let's be honest, nobody cares since I'm in the background/I barely do anything to the video/not too many viewers. If I showed them to people again, probably more people would remember seeing my mario maker levels with 20k different players rather than my ugly minecraft skin in a random 5m+ views 8 year old dantdm video. Not to mention you could search for where youtubers are on the internet way better than before, like through streams and you could stream snipe them.

I think it's really funny how Gem portraits teachers as people who think about everything they say with utmost care, while my teachers are out here calling us old ass MFers & yelling Anong us!!!

@16:30 A big reason why I stopped streaming is that I felt like I always needed to be "on" and "engaged" the entire stream, especially on platforms like twitch, where you really have to have a certain personality type in order to stream regularly to a large audience like that... or at least be good at faking that kind of a personality. No shade to anyone who does do that; more power to them because honestly it sounds exhausting. I've just more or less kind of resigned myself to the fact that while I enjoy streaming, I'm not a capital-S Streamer™

I definitely get your point and agree with it even. I'm a tiny artist or something along those lines but soon enough you realize that whatever you do as much as you may've worked on it is nothing but a product for another person to consume, and they will never see it in the same way you did while making it. Furthermore, you do get disensitized to compliments when it feels like they're given out of duty. I'm not a huge artist by any means, but I rarely ever feel much whenever I get praised for what I do, what I think about it ends up mattering to me way more. That being said though I just wanted to say This video is just gem telling us to back off :p

The pikachu example reminds me of when a family member you mostly see on holidays hears that you like turtles and/or sees you with a shirt with a turtle on it and then every year they give you some random thing with a turtle on it or shaped like a turtle and you say thanks but really its something youre going to forget you even got cause just because you like turtles doesnt mean that everything turtle themed is something you care about, having a turtle on it doesnt make a candle something im going to use. We try to be careful what we say we like around family cause we could wind up getting a box of em twice a year...

I've never met some famous person that I look up to, but I've had this mindset for a while that if I ever meet someone like that, I don't want to be a toxic fan, so this video has definitely helped me consider how I will act if I ever find myself in that situation

8:45 yes, that is absolutely true. i swear people don't get this clear enough sometimes. i may respect you and enjoy what you make for your community that i'm a part of, however, i'm only a fan. you don't know me, you don't know who i am, what i do, or even why do the things i do. you've never even interacted with me and the same goes the other way around. all we know is that we have a mutual interest in splatoon as a series, and even if we were to interact once or twice, none of what i said changes.

When I was like 13 or so, I made a twitter account and started following a lot of people I admired on other platforms. There, I saw them interact with their community, or their friends, and developed some big parasocial relationships with them, and now when I see that I cringe a lot. So yeah, don't do that.

It's really easy to forget for a lot of people that content creators are also just normal people. There are a number of crazy things that might've happened to them to get them where they are. Maybe it's purely their raw talent that got them a lot of attention, maybe they've accomplished some crazy feat through practice and determination, maybe they just got lucky with algorithms or happened to be in the right place at the right time. I think this issue isn't much different than people treating celebrities like their characters in movies or TV shows. You only know that person from one particular front, so it makes sense to interact with them on that front, but understand that there is a whole life of experiences and ideas behind that front that you know next to nothing about and have next to nothing to do with it. Even when it comes to meeting new people in general, I always try to come up with questions I don't think they get asked much, usually about how *they feel* about certain subjects. I'm not exactly good at that, but I like to think the attempt is appreciated. I'm genuinely more interested in the humanity of the person than all the surface-level stuff I already know about them.

If there’s something I’ve learned from the internet, it’s that they really love simple memes. No matter how inaccurate or irrelevant they are. If it’s simple and easy to laugh at, it’ll be picked up easily. Is it worth trying to change this? For a long time I would always try to advocate for making sure the truth behind memes was properly understand, but the longer I go, the less I believe people care. Some people just want to laugh at the silly thing as their wind-off from work. To not think too hard about things and be able to understand things simply without too much effort. They say nuance is a superpower. It makes me wonder if I’m “special” as part of the seemingly small population that cares about nuance. I’d love to educate people on why nuance matters, but sometimes you look at people and they actively choose to reject it. Well, if you wanna make a stable living on YT it’s easy to make a simple and easy to understand character. Uncle Roger, Davie 504, TwoSet, are all examples of people who take a real person and sort of personify that person into an easier to understand character, or at least one that repeats an easy to understand line. It makes me wonder if the smarter way to enact change in the world is to fight memes with memes. Don’t like a meme? Make one that’ll replace it. Get everyone saying your meme instead. The old one will slowly fade out and yours will become the main character. It’s not perfect, since some will still nuancelessly repeat your thing inappropriately, but if it does more good than harm, it sounds like a worthwhile idea.

I work with famous people and see what the repercussions of fame are and believe me, it’s very very overrated. I would never want to be famous myself, the price you pay just isn’t worth it. Having anonymity and people not being concerned with you is priceless but a lot of people just don’t get that.

I know the topic of internet fame is only slightly tangential to the whole topic at hand but god is it kind of scary how One throwaway thing you do or say can blow up exponentially. i get rather anxious putting... Anything on the internet because "what if people decide to latch on to this for god knows what reason and now suddenly im That Person for the next month or whenever people decide to let go".

Somewhat personal anecdote that might or might not be related: there's someone I'm pretty close friends with who happens to be pretty well known in a niche game community for being a top player (keeping her anonymous for privacy reasons). As in, I literally only found out who she was because someone reacted to one of her hardest clears. However, as I started watching her twitch streams and interacting in her discord server, I stopped showing up solely because "holy fucking shit it's her she's the girl who's really good at the video game oh my god" and just, her being a cool and funny person to be around. Eventually after a couple months of being a regular in chat and in the discord, she ended up reaching out to *me* in DMs to just talk about stuff unrelated to the game, which was honestly a really weird experience at first. Over time, that novelty of becoming genuine friends with someone who you look up to like that wore off, and our relationship stopped being "Holy shit I'm friends with a top player woah that's so cool" and just "this is my friend, she's cool and I like talking to her". Very eye opening experience with regards to actually getting to know someone "famous" per se.

I’ve been getting more well known in the Omori VRChat community because I create avatars. Those avatars are going to be made public soon, but I’m gonna make it very clear that I don’t want people trying to be friends with me just because of it. Heck, I even have it in my bio that I don’t take commissions or requests. I make avatars for fun, and it makes me happy seeing people enjoy using them. I don’t want that to be all I’m known for. I already constantly get requests to clone my avatars, and I’m sick of it. I’ve met some of the coolest people in my life through the game, but it was when I didn’t make avatars, they knew me for me. I already have gotten tons of friend requests from people I’ve barely or never interacted with. It’s a little worrying, but I’m gonna make sure to establish my boundaries properly and if people need to be told off about this sort of thing then I’m going to do it. More people need to know that stuff like this is wrong, and seeing you post this video gives me hope for the future. You’re awesome, Gem :)
