I downgraded my camera from a Sony A7RV to a Fujifilm X-T4 which seems crazy, but there's a solid reason why.

Why an X-T4 and not an X-T5? I decided I just didn't need the additional features, it just wasn't worth paying more for

I chose Fuji when I decided to go mirrorless in 2014. I went from full frame Canon 5d3 to a fuji XT1. I chose it because it felt most like a film camera which was my background. I loved that there was an aperture ring on the lens. And it was super easy to use the buttons and dials and not menus that's what I disliked about the Sony cameras. Eventually I sold all my Canon gear and currently I am shooting with a Fuji xt3 still. I also love my Fuji x100f and you're right it does make photography fun again

I went from thirty years plus of using full frame Canons to X-H2. The Canons, while being great are a bit clinical. Going from 26MP to 40 was a big thing, but once I’d transferred I just fell in love with the Fujifilm process and their colour science is -to me- superior.

"I don't know if you've heard 'bout SquareSpace..." ROTFLOL. I get the camera-relationship thing completely! I was so disappointed when Lumix replaced the love-of-my-life G9 with a box with all the controls moved G9II. My new love is the OM-1. It should not matter that much, but things other than specs do. The G9II innerds on the old G9 body would have been stellar. The mentoring sounds like a blast, have fun! Cheers!

Great video, Rick, and great message. 👏🏻👏🏻 They say, the best camera is the one you have on you, but if you pack a camera and barely get it out of the bag then that is no good. I remember I only upgraded due to weather sealing, so nowadays my Nikon Z6ii, with super zoom 24-200mm and 40mm prime, is all I need to get out and be inspired. Best of luck with the X-T4. Your work with their earlier cameras, and X100, is great.

Would have fancied a switch from Nikon F to Fuji X and that would have been an X-T4 back then. I've always had and still have a soft spot for the brand, the colours, control scheme, smaller size and price, etc. Problem is, I wanted a high quality 24-120 and a 100-300/400 equivalent lens to start out. In the end I went with a Z6 because their versions of these zooms turned out to be quite a bit superior.

I'm shooting on Sony (a7c) and Fuji x100v as well! - and what you've described is very real. The Sony has been my Zoom (video coaching biz) and workhorse, but then you feel an itch that needs scratching and you pull out the Fuji. Thinking of giving in to a bit of GAS and going for Xpro2, we'll see. But the point about truly "seeing" - this has been my mantra, might make a video on this later. Good luck.

I shoot with the XT-2, when I look at my holiday, landscape and street photography I ask myself would I take better photos with the XT-5 or a full frame camera? I look at my photos on a TV or make a photo book - and you don't need a higher resolution for either. If I were to shoot more video, then I would probably upgrade to the XT-5. The main advantage for me is simply the compact system size and the price-performance ratio.

I completely understand what you have been going through. I have been through the exact same process. Several different models of both Sony and Fuji. I have settled on a Fuji X-H1 and a Sony A7R2. Both are old and outdated by current standards (kind of like me 😅), but both were flagship bodies when they were originally released. And that makes them good enough for me, and both are more capable than my skillset. I enjoy both cameras equally, but when I want to take landscape photos or crop, I take the Sony. When I want beautiful colours and feel more creative, I take the Fuji. The perfect blend for my needs.

This was a great video and topic! And I think an experience all photographers will go through at one point or another, whether your a professional or just a hobbyist. I recently moved to Fuji after shooting Nikon DSLR's for 15+ years, and it absolutely reignited my creativity and passion for photography. And it definitely helps that I can easily carry my camera with me everyday now, which was definitely a struggle before. I don't think it's just the inherent advantages of mirrorless cameras in general, but more specifically Fuji that has helped get me back into it, with their film sims and Fuji IQ features, native lenses, and frankly the community. And yes, they just look and feel cool, and I just want to take photos with it haha. But it being mirrorless has also played a big part as my potential lens selection has now become massive, especially from all the third party manufactures making really great lenses now, but also the ability to adapt glass (and both offering great value for the money!). I shoot both Canon FD and Nikon F manual lenses and I love it. But I don't think this just applies to Fuji, it can be about any brand and photographer, if the gear you use fulfills your needs and also sparks joy then that's what matters most.

I understand what you say about fun, but you also talk about size and weight, a bit strange that you show the Sony with a sigma 85mm 1.4. If you had an similar lens on the fuji (at least in terms of depth of field) it would have been the Fuji 50mm 1.0. Then the size and weight had become almost the same. It would have been better to mount sony's 40mm 2.5 on your R5, the difference in size would have been much smaller compared to the X-T4 with an f/2 lens.
@RickBebbington
@RickBebbington Месяц назад
Size and weight was just a factor. No matter which lens you put on the Sony, the equivalent setup on the Fuji will be smaller and lighter, but I get what you are saying. It doesn't change for me the fact that I still find the fuji much more enjoyable :)
@rumattso
@rumattso Месяц назад
@@RickBebbington I understand that Fuji is more enjoyable for you! And having the very latest equipment does not make you a better photographer. But I do not agree that it is just to conclude that the same equivalent setup on Fuji is smaller and lighter than the same equivalent on Sony. Two random lenses, the fuji 23mm 1.4 is a bit heavier and larger than the sony 35mm 1.8. The Fuji 50-140 2.8 is much heavier and larger than the sony 70-200 f/4 mark 2.
@MaybeTiberius
@MaybeTiberius Месяц назад
@@RickBebbington i think this statement is only half true about lens sizes. and its something that to me always surprises me like nothing else. You enjoy the fuji and fuji is a very old school tactile way of shooting... to me one of, if not THE selling point for a mirrorless compared to a dslr is the ability to adapt lenses and how freaking easy it is to focus because of focus peaking and such. when i hear people say that: ''oh yeah those sony lenses are soooo big'' well it always refers to new modern lenses. slap some MF vintage glas prime on there and it becomes tiny. i really dont get it. ''lenses so big, lenses so expensive'' you can get something like an old ai nikkor prime for like 40 bucks and its tiny. and there are so many insane value lenses out there like alot of the voigtländer ones, the helios, the nikon 135mm is a legend too. and all you really lose is autofocus... wich doesnt matter anything because of how easy mirrorless are for mf. yet people only talk about modern huge lenses

@@rumattsoI think it's not much the size but that Sony (and Canon) are a bit boring. Great technology and image quality. But not inspiring to shoot with. And that matters to the enjoyment. Image quality when people are displaying their work on Instagram doesn't really matter. I've started downgrading my gear a bit too. I'm having more fun shooting in a 12yo Fuji X-E1 using the straight out of camera film simulations. It's sluggish AF and only 16mo but I just want to pick it up and go for a walk. I would never had thought that I ditch shooting raw for my casual work but it's fun

Ha, ha, I've just bought a second hand X-T10 as a travel/street camera - my work cameras are Sony A7Riii and many years a go I had an X-T1 so pretty similar history to you. One thing I love about Fujifilm is being able to process the raw files in-camera, why can't Sony offer this. However, none of the Fuji X cameras I really see as work cameras, they just don't seem as robust as Sony or Nikon even if the output is pro quality. Also, I've heard their repair and after service is poor. Sony is an electronics company and they design their cameras in a no nonsense detached sort of way, using the X-T10 (with its great 16MP sensor) I could tell they consulted photographers in its design, so much better ergonomically than Sony, even the shutter sounds more pleasing. Sometimes limitations are spurs to creativity and I feel using 16MP APSC is making me approach photography differently. I now treat the full frame Sony like I used to treat my medium format camera!

Nikon is an optics company, their camera are build like tanks, their lenses are awesome, they have a consistency in ergonomics and controls and just the pure fact how consumer oriented they are building on longlasting usage if i look back at how they kept alive F mount for 60 years. when i think sony, i think playstations and tvs. its more like an entertainment company first. and their cameras feel exactly like that. they feel like nimble plasticy computers in your hand and i can see why a sony would not inspire anyone to go out shooting.

But if Nikon would release an APS-C camera aimed at enthusiasts and pros, like the long rumored "Z80", I would definitely switch to that. I mainly shoot with telephoto lenses anyway and I would absolutely love an APS-C equivalent of the Z8. Though I would keep the Z7 II as a secondary camera. The resolution is nice to have and the dynamic range is kinda nuts compared to the Z50. The files are a lot easier to work with when shooting in tough lighting conditions.

I've done the same and it has changed so much. Few years ago I switched from canon eos r to Sony a7iv and the Sony is the best camera I've ever owned the af is so far better than anything else I've tried and the dynamic range is insane. BUT it is uninspiring to shoot with. That lead me to shoot more film and I also got a X-T4 and more recently I stumbled on a too-cheap-to-pass x100f. I use the Sony for all my paid work but 100% of non paid work I use the Fujis.

Smart decision to go with xt4 instead of xt5. Fuji completely destroyed AF with latest firmwares for 5th gen cameras. XT4 and XT3 are now more reliable cameras when it comes to AF than the newest ones which is so embarrassing for a company like Fuji but they obviously don’t care at all.

It's funny because I have an A7RV and I feel the same way. I love it, but at the same time, for some reason, it is just too good. I almost get more enjoyment out of my OM-1 (the 1970 film camera) than my A7RV. I think I might just end up with a Leica M-P or something (a modern, fully mechanical film camera)

@@RickBebbington it's just kinda weird because it was basically my dream camera. I almost feel guilty for not loving it as much as I do, hah. I perfectly matches the way I shoot.

how do you feel about the fuji identity it kind of sells around? i am having a look at some fuji aswell to try. but there is always one thing holding me back a little: fuji is like all in on: selling this idea of film sims and stuff. i have no interest in that at all. nor do i have any interest in shooting jpg either. is fuji even worth it if you dont care about one of its main selling points?

Or maybe, Sony is just boring as hell. I've purchased an Olympus camera several weeks ago and I've been having so much fun. It's just 20 mpix, which is more than enough in most cases, but I don't really care. It's brought me back to thinking more of composition and make the photos interesting more than anything else. I just pick it up and start shooting. It's fun.
