I’m really hoping we get a bewitched set, my family only on season two on DVD of all things and the child and I watched it a lot (I think I stopped watching it somewhere around the early double digits of my life) not to mention my dad recently re-watched all of it on IMDB TV. While I haven’t seen I dream of Jeannie, these Shows from the 60s are all very fascinating to me with how they used to do effects. One time my dad noticed in an episode of bewitched that the backyard lawn and the carpet were made out of the same material.

I actuall compared my Jeannie Sony release to this and I thought they were more crisp than these were and was going to get rid of the bluray. Here is my comparison (I think the blu ray looks worse)... I now own both the complete blu ray set and the the original seasonal releases on DVD (one box set per season). Several years ago I purchased the original season by season "I Dream of Jeannie" DVD releases when they first came out. I always like to get them in their first run release as later releases can actually look worse. These were box sets with four DVD's per season. They were single stacked in slim plastic cases, two slim plastic cases in each season box. Each slim case had nice art work along with the episode titles plus fairly extensive episode summaries on the back. These are not the cheap cardboard cases when the DVD was re-released. There is a really nice artistic menu system on each DVD disc and the image is genuinely pretty good. I received the complete blu ray set today and immediately set out to compare the image quality. I compared the exact same scenes from several episodes (from both the original DVD release and the new blu ray). I also compared them on two different players two different TV's. One set up included a Sony 4K player and 65' Samsung 4K TV. The other set up included an LG blu ray player and 65' Samsung 1080p TV. I viewed the comparison with my wife and four of our kids. Mind you, I worked for fourteen years in audio/video sales and installation. And we ALL agreed, the new blu ray release actually looks WORSE on both TV's than the original plastic slim case season by season DVD release. The new blu ray has some strange interlacing going on (whatever it is, I'm not sure at this point) that actually makes the images look more blocky than the DVD release.

It has both interlacing and compression. The interlacing comes from Sony, the compression comes from Mill Creek. The worst part is, these aren't even the newest masters from Sony, because the episodes on streaming are GORGEOUS. So Sony sent old transfers, and Mill Creek crammed a ton of them onto too few discs.

So getting this just for the fact that Mills Creek has been so hit or miss with me the way they do their sets. Not a fan of how they had the DVDs in the dvd set of I Dream of Jeannie. On some of your videos I hear you talk a little about the company releasing the media. That said I wonder if you might consider doing a little spotlight on these companies themselves with the pros and cons on how good of a job you think they are doing from the quality of their relases to the packaging to the offering of being bare bones or having the bells and whistles.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight 2 года назад
I'll have to think about how I could talk about that without burning any bridges. Plus, the labels don't really fit into boxes, with most of them putting out lots of different kinds of content. For instance, Mill Creek Entertainment releases bare-bones movie-only Blu-rays, budget TV on DVD and Blu-ray, but also larger, feature packed sets like 30 Rock, the recent Randolph Scott Collection, and even their Ultraman sets have quite a few bells and whistles. It would be hard to define them, since they do so many different things. I'll give it some thought though.

@julianregis8608
@julianregis8608 2 года назад
I am far from a technical A/V expert, especially for someone my age. But, I do know IDOJ and its long history on home media. From my limited understanding of such things: the streaming services, DVDs/Blu-ray, and channels currently airing it all came from the same master (“Oh, master!” JEANNIE puns for the win). As you pointed out, any remastering efforts were done by Sony/Columbia likely in the early 2000s when the series was being prepped for their initial DVD release. And that’s it! The evidence to support this rests on the fact that each version of every episode across all platforms is identical; that is, the season 3 opening theme is applied to every season 2-5 episode, a handful of episodes have tiny syndication edits, the soundtrack/laugh track for three episodes has been “reconstructed”, etc. The silver lining here being that there’s no undiscovered miscellaneous masters floating around we are being screwed out of…I guess? So, that’s the story - the current prints seen everywhere ARE the only transfers in existence that I’m aware of. I am unsure if this is standard practice for just Sony or most studios regarding a show this old. Regardless, I believe the picture quality issues on the Blu-ray stem less from Mill Creek’s outdated sources and more from the odd upscaling they applied, in addition to the compression. Of course, if you have any other info to the contrary I would gladly stand corrected.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight 2 года назад
The only thing that I'd add is that Mill Creek doesn't do any upscaling themselves, that would have been done by Sony. Mill Creek doesn't touch audio or video at all, nor do they have the facilities or the license to do so, they simply take the audio and video files that they're provided and press it to a disc. They're not permitted to make alterations to the files they're sent. So while encoding issues would have come from them, any upscaling would have been done by Sony. To me, these look very different than what's on streaming. I don't think compression is the problem either, because other shows have a similar amount of running time on the discs and look much better. Interestingly, the later seasons of the show look the worst, and those are the seasons of the show that are hard to find on streaming platforms.

Both are 12 disc sets, season 3 has 26 episodes in one season, so that is two discs to cover a full season on the dvd release, season 4 has 26 episodes in one season, so they are able to fit 12 episodes on disc 1 and 14 episodes on disc 2 on the dvd version, season 5 has 26 episodes, which discs 1 and 2 both have 13 episodes on each disc.

That's correct. The only currently available I Dream of Jeannie Complete Series set is from Mill Creek Entertainment, and those DVDs look worse than these new Blu-rays. If you don't have the series, this is still the best way to get it. Just know going in that these aren't the latest masters for the series and video quality is not great. Yes, it's a widespread issue, most likely baked into the source from Sony during their restoration. It's been reported to Mill Creek, but there hasn't been a replacement program, presumably because there is no clean version without the error.

The old DVD set does not have the problem, it's unique to the HD transfer. The last few seasons of the show aren't on streaming, presumably because of the poor restoration quality. To fix it, Sony would have to remaster and reauthor the transfer, and they seem to be in no hurry, unfortunately.

I compared the episodes on the disc to the streaming episodes on the Roku Channel and the streaming versions are considerably better than what's on the discs. I'm not even convinced they're the same masters. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I wonder if that's why this was delayed so much by Mill Creek Entertainment. If they weren't happy with what Sony sent them, they may have very well tried to secure better, more up to date masters (like what's on streaming, and what looks like reference quality) and kept pushing the release date back in hopes of working it out. That's exactly what happened with The Inner Sanctum set last year, which had one of the films in standard definition. This is total speculation, but I sure do wonder...

Forgive me for posting my input throughout the thread, but I truly want to save people the money from buying this set. As a former A/V professional (we did high end installs for corporations and churches) and, having now done my own comparison of both the blu ray and DVD (original plastic slim case release) on two different set ups, me and my family actually think the blu ray looks blockier and see no clear improvement on the color. Try comparing the same scenes, look at the same object and look at the DVD vs blu ray. For example, in looking at Barbara Eden's eyes and outfit in comparative scenes we noticed that the blu ray was more jagged and blocky. Pupils on the blu ray looked staggered.

I thought with bluray and the obsession over the terms 2k and 4k, that we had seen the last of this kind of crappy product where you don't know what you're getting on disc. Thought we were in an age where we have a certain standard of releases. I guess I was wrong. In fact, I think they are getting more and more sneaky when it comes to TV shows...never quite confirming what is true HD, what is upscaled, and what is SD.
@cmoneytheman

@chrispappas5515
@chrispappas5515 2 года назад
These were upscaled from the same masters used to make the DVDs. They are upscaled 480i (interlaced) and worse, the masters were old enough to have been done with 3:2 pulldown to convert 24 film frames per second to 30 video frames per second. The 3:2 pull down causes you to get frame 1, frame 2, a meld of frame 2 and 3, a meld of frame 3 and 4, frame 4, repeat. The meld on frames 2/3 and 3/4 means you never get a clear frame 3 and that 2 out of five frames have mismatched interlacing. The upscaling done here was also crap. I was able to take a few different frames from the DVD set, upscale them and get better results than presented in this blu-ray release. I'm hoping for an ACTUAL remastered Region B or region free release.
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight 2 года назад
Ah, the 3:2 pull down explains a lot! The upscaling would have been done by Sony, so I have little hope we will ever get anything better, regardless of the region. Maybe one day Sony will go back to the film sources and do a true remaster, but THIS release would have been that opportunity. One gets the feeling that ship has sailed. Thanks for the insightful addition to the conversation!

I understand that Mill Creek is a budget company. Very cheap on a lot of stuff, but when Warner/20th Century Fox put out the Batman 1966 Blu-Ray release, on most discs it had 12 episodes on 1 disc, and boy did they look great, they looked fantastic! Why does the Warner release look better with 12 episodes than Mill Creek? And I know they are older transfers of this set, but I'm just saying.

Mill Creek did this transfer and the color sucks. Also, the reunion movie is on the second disc (instead of the first disc where it reads it is), and when you try to watch “Hurricane Jeannie,” you can’t get to it without going to the first episode on that disc and fast forwarding to it. A shotty release for a series that deserves better.

Mill Creek did not do the transfer, nor do they do any in-house transfer work. They license existing masters from license holders, meaning these transfers came from Sony. I think there's a story here behind the scenes that we don't know. It LOOKS like Sony has better transfers that they aren't licensing. If this sells poorly, Sony will say "there's not a big enough audience for retro TV on Blu-ray to be profitable" and if it sells well Sony got paid and everyone makes money. I don't see a way where fans get anything better, unless another distributor outside of the U.S. gets the license and actually gets the best masters from Sony. It's just too many "ifs" for now.

I love this whole series for what it represents. The good old days, when a woman could be viewed as a object of beauty and it was not considered a bad thing, considered instantly sinister in intent and design by the Twitter cancel mobs that shape culture today. How times have changed. Probably why I sink further and further into Vintage properties. Man I wish I grew up in a different era. I know history is looked threw rose tinted glasses. However don’t tell me the 50’s-60’s were not a simpler time. Opportunity was more abundant and families actually stayed together for the most part. Good times. Like the matrix I don’t want to be NEO, I want to be the guy who begs to be inserted back into the matrix lol. Forget all the enlightenment of today. Give me a steak a pack of cigarettes and a GTO. Give me a home with a loving wife that I pay the bills and she as a loving wife and homemaker, gives me the reason to do so. A series like this today has as much in common with society in 2021 as a Martian 👽 does. The day n life trials and tribulations of a 50-60’s family unit is paradise, almost un fathomable to what is presented as common place American living to my unfortunate butt today. When you cut threw the comedy, you see what remains as this sitcom was suppose to emulate the target audiences life at that time in a typical middle class American home of that era(it’s median baseline). This was not a groundbreaking risk taker designed to shock the American of that days senses. Besides a beautiful genie 🧞‍♀️ the cast plays it strait, plays it like a typical person of that era would in accordance to the high jinx the beautiful genie 🧞‍♀️ enacts upon them. It’s what my Grandpa and Grandma (blessed with innocence and non enlightened moral fiber) deemed high end comedy akin to a seinfield, whatever sitcom trash is liked today. Tell me that’s not simpler, My Grandparents, it’s whom the studio targeted to beam this vintage gem into the homes of that treasured era of the nuclear family. A true shock that this time machine, not only avoided the censorship chopping block, but has manifested a reintroduced set to the masses. Good going mill creek!
