I am constantly amazed by just how *small* geese are. I remember being 5 years old and being chased by a goose that was taller than I was, I always instinctually think they're at least like 3' tall

Hey Morgan you should make the duck ramp more stable. It’s really wobbly and you can see in the video that the ducks are kinda hesitant to walk down it. You could put some support under it or switch out the wood to make the ducks feel more comfortable walking on it. But right now it’s more of a bridge than a ramp

It sounds like the mother goose was loosing too much heat through the floor of the dog house, so it might be an idea to build little brooding houses for the geese with better floor insulation.

Toby wants to be able to see outside, so wouldn't use a catflap (well, dogflap for him). I doubt he's going to use that doghouse as is, what with the 3 solid walls it has already, if it has 4 he's definitely not staying in there.

An idea to keep the dog (and cat) house for them is not to put straw in there. The chickens/geese may go in for shade/shelter, but without straw I don't think they would nest. I know my ducks wouldn't.

You know, this is a really good idea.... And especially in the summer, Toby and Pablo probably don't need the additional insulation. My super-hairy, big dogs always liked laying directly on the cool, hard concrete - it was their favorite spot. Maybe that would help encourage Toby to use his house. Straw could always be added back once it's "his" spot and it starts to get cold again.

@@crystald3655 There's other options besides straw for dogs and cats that geese etc wouldn't use. We use blankets for example. Occasionally our ducks will sit on them, but they aren't as interested as in straw.

I’ve got an idea to keep the geese and chickens out. You know those strands of plastic sometimes at shop doors, like there to keep the wind out or something and you can still walk in and out? You could put them there and Toby’ll learn to push through and the geese won’t understand to do that.

I have a recommendation for future versions of the Dog/Cat house, turn one wall into a big door so you can easily open it up to remove unwanted birds and to be able to maybe more easily clean it.

A side door/hatch for the Toby house may be a good future project for ease of access. I love the overall design, but was wondering about how unpleasant it would be for any needed work. Rotten goose egg up close, on all fours, answered that question. 🤣 Also, I am a firm believer in ensuring you can easily remove an animal from anyplace they have access to. I've learned the hard way. If you ever need to get a sick Toby out, may be really difficult.

Glad to see that you reclaimed toby dogs castle from the fire hissing, er, breathing dragons. Regarding the door to keep the winged beasts outside, maybe something with a little pressure/resistance mechanic? Toby could easily push it open, while chicken and geese most likely would be deterred by it.

When the embryos were no more than 20 days old, were the geese disturbed from brooding atop the eggs? If I recall there was a cold snap there sometime in the middle to late May. Just curious because I'd like to learn why too.

Use heavy duty pvc curtains like they have for walk in freezers for Toby's door, then the birds wont be strong enough to go through but Toby will breeze right through. I hope this helps!

Are you sure all of those eggs were dead? You said they were at earlier stage of development but maybe the female started incubating them much later then defending the nest. No bird expert tho :)

The mother keeps the eggs warm, plenty of farms leave their hens in outdoor coops and places like these geese were to hatch eggs. The silkies hatched some and they were outside too. Likely just not very good mothers, or issues with their genes making them not develop properly. Even the eggs in the incubators haven't been hatching well.

@@zahidyousuf4387 Even his incubated eggs didn't hatch well. Clearly there is some sort of genetic issue going on if both indoor incubated eggs and natural goose incubated eggs had a bad hatch rate. Sounds like maybe some inbreeding issues or bad genes from the males or females.

That's what I thought. I noticed in the last video he brought out the 4 to try and have the mother adopt...then in the shot after he brought them back to the barn I only counted 3 getting offered greens. Maybe that mystery gosling is the 4th?

I believe he had a total of 9. Four of them were volunteered for the adoption from hell, and wound up in the barn. But out of the nine, 6 got sold, leaving the three in the barn, including the one that was attacked by the angry mother goose.
