I went to China in 1997, alone, with in hand my lonely planet travel book of 1060 pages part in Mandarin language (so I can show to people the beautiful little houses scrip of China language to be able to go where I wanted to) It has been very difficult but very rewarding. I travelled out of season and saw few others travellers. I was young, curious and willing to see the most of my stay: Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin, Yangshuo and Shenzhen. At that time still a lot of people wear the traditional grey clothes. It was the only country where I had a bed in the bus for those long 12 hours trip. I would like very much to go back to see what you guys are experiencing now in a Modern China. Travels make all men better.

This city is a big time outlier in terms of statistics. Life in a denser city is very different. This city is built like Paris but with a fraction of the population. It's like the burbs and there's correlations showing decrease in population density leads to rise in health and wellness. I think because most of the Chinese coverage is either, like Yan said, political, or when people do look at ordinary lives its people in Shanghai or Beijing, these huge mega cities. I am a Chinese American girl who grew up almost entirely in the US, and since I was little I grew up in the enviornment where "china is bad" "Chinese are bad" and that kind of even rubbed off on me. Even if my parents tell me their childhood and good things of China I was hesitant to fully believe them. This summer, after I graduated University, I gathered all my courage and made a very important descision. That is, without anyone else I know, I will travel China blind and alone(like, no advice purely just where I wanna see or visit), for four months. It was a mindblowing experience. First of all, I have NEVER been surrounded by SO MANY people who look similar to me, I was submerged in a place that centered around the Chinese culture, language, gestures, food, music, human interactions that are so different from the western style. But it was extremely comforting. I've travelled to see historic miracles of human civilization, see modern technological miracles, the AMAZING food choices, how diverse the crusines were, (vegertarian or not you never run out of food options, being vegetarian in China is like the best thing ever) and the people were so NICE, I can talk to strangers sitting beside me in the high speed railways just talking about our life and experiences. I've even meet a lady whom I feel so kindred with that we traveled the entirety of chengdu just within the 2 hours meeting her on the railway, especially considering the age gap(she 37, me 22). We had so much fun exploring many small or lavish restaurants, trying new drinks (coffee/ fruit tea/ tea/ boba) visiting tourist spots, PANDAS, and buying souvenirs over the past 3 days I spent in Chengdu. I would've never done or even think that if I was in the US for fear of being kidnapped or mugged. Not to mention all the other very nice people who helped me with purchasing tickets, pointing directions, offering suggestions for the local best, and even just a pat on the head from friendly elders or shy waving from young children. My expections were shattered to pieces, I've never felt more comfortable and relaxed being somewhere. It still makes me tear up whenever I remember fond memories I made during these 4 months now that I had to return to the US. I'm currently watching all these "travelling to China" videos for comfort, and I feel like you guys made such good video series, focusing not only on breaking social expectations, but also letting us see the local people, which was what made MY "travel to china" experience extra special. The energy you guys give off is also very comforting, I love genuine human to human interactions and mingling, so heartwarming. Thank you guys!

we probably share some kind of blood connection, This is also the reason you've come to China against all odds,to see firsthand if it's really as bad as the media paints it. I remember over a decade ago during my college days, chatting with American friends online. their go-to question was often, "Does your government brainwash you, treating us like enemies? how's your communist president ...blah blah blah?" the entire western world seems to be immersed in the stereotypical impressions crafted by the media. hopefully, we can learn from each other, break free from this stereotype, fostering more understanding and peace. By the way, I'm living in Changsha now. If you ever get the chance, feel free to drop by anytime. It's convenient to come here by high-speed train or plane, and I can show you around to experience the unique local cuisine and scenery. looking forward to sharing more enjoyable moments with you!

I am Chinese. You can think of this as a playground to experience French culture. Just like many people will go to Disney to experience fairy tales. After the project failed. They changed their marketing strategy. Start converting commercial properties into residential properties. But few people bought it. Rent a lot. This is a commercial project. . . But the project fell short of expectations. . The Chinese are not that much interested in France Now. This French-style area. Functionally more like a "French style park" Beijing also has a place to experience Hollywood. Universal Studios. There are houses like those in the movie.

Everybody let’s go to your nearby Chinese restaurant to order a plate of egg fired rice or cook it by yourself to celebrate the special day and support Chef Wang Gang because Chef Wang is about getting cancelled just for uploading a video about how to make egg fried rice on Weibo yesterday because Mao Zedong’s son, Mao AnYing, “was killed in action by an air strike during the Korean War.” (according to wiki) Little Pink think egg fired rice is an insult to Mao AnYing and saw egg fried rice as a taboo. According to Wikipedia, Tianducheng was constructed in 2007 and designed for 10,000 residents. By 2013 it only had 2,000 residents but by 2017 it had grown to 30,000 and had been expanded several times. So it appears to be a successful development and not a ghost town at all. The Parisian section is just residential. I assume during the day everyone is at work and at school so it appears deserted. But after work people return and it all comes alive. I would like to see the same area on a weekend. I would assume then the streets would be filled with people during the day as well as at night.

I’m an American, and I’ve been living in Beijing for more than 5 years now. It’s surprisingly chill and safe here compared to what the media describes it to be like. People are people no matter where you go, and Chinese people are very friendly people.

@@SuperIce6374 Well being an American, I was used to having to always be on my guard when in public. It’s so easy to get something stolen or to get caught up in a bad situation. In China it’s a lot different. I can’t count the number of times I or a friend has left something somewhere (e.g. a phone, passport or wallet) and getting it back because people here do the right thing. People here in China are also very generous. They are always sharing things like snacks or showing some form of hospitality without even thinking about it. People here are very friendly and family oriented, so it’s not uncommon to see young children playing outside unsupervised. The crime rate in China is really low. Citizens don’t own guns. Police officers don’t even carry firearms, so it makes day to day activities less stressful. Another thing that makes China a less stressful place to live is the public transportation. It’s so easy to get around all parts of China without owning a car. The bullet trains are amazing, and most cities have excellent subway systems and public buses. Those are some of the main reasons why living in China has been so chill and safe.

The media doesn’t depict Chinese crime levels as dangerous. Don’t twist words. They just steal everything. They literally replicated a city.

@@JackWaParker there is a big Chinese company that installed a industrial set here in my city, Brazil. Due to political ignorance and in some cases, racism.. most people laugh at them and make jokes about those who work in that company. But they pay much more than average companies in here. They offer studies scholarships for the younger to get qualified, there are sports and social areas around the buildings.. and if u know mandarin, they might even hire u without any specific job in there. The Chinese bosses and committee always come here for events and inaugurations... always smiley and festive... but the mayor never smiles or seems friendly in official pictures. Its a shame... I hate this and after seeing videos like this, I feel like I should invest some time learning their language and try a job outside.. cause Im so tired of this country.. I have post degree, lots of studies and it is still so hard to afford my own living, plus dealing with stupid and poorly educated people at work, at home, at public spaces. not to mention I cant go outside late at night as I used to when I was a teen.. the city grew but criminality too. I dont feel like I belong here anymore.

Most of the uninhabited 'ghost cities' shown in western media, are now fully or partially populated. Think from a logical perspective. If China's population is 1.4bn and still growing, why would they leave those places abandoned? The narrative that China is an abandoned real estate project is way off the mark.

Indeed, it´s great to follow the news... but to an extent. It really messes with your perception if you don´t go out and experience things for yourself. Also, in real life you don´t discuss politics nearly the amount people do online, so it´s way easier to common ground.
