Japan's economic boom in the late 1980's led to the building of structures that were swiftly abandoned and forgotten when it came crashing down in the 90's. Today we explore a building who's purpose remains a mystery.

Hello chris, I did some research and found a Japanese blog explaining that this is a bussharitou (a pagoda to represent the remains of Buddha). The big Buddha you found used to be housed inside the box at the top of the pagoda. I found a drone video of the structure that does indeed show there is / was a seat in the box. Apparently people used to be able to see the Buddha sparkling from the town. The blog I read also said they spoke with the granddaughter of the person who constructed it… it was in fact privately constructed by an ordinary old man with private funds about 20 years ago, but during construction he passed away. His family were unable to maintain or carry on the construction.

Chris, I think the four square blocks on top of the ring were supposed to be shrines to Buddha, with four statues intended - one in each one. I'd guess the bottom inner chamber was something like a garden of peace. I really think the Buddha statue being there is no coincidence. It also looks like the ledge to get up onto into the square block is too high for anyone to actually walk onto, supporting the idea that it was not meant to be accessed but rather hold a grand structure or statue, and to be gazed upon from a distance.
@bakaichigo
@bakaichigo Год назад
Agreed!
@jerrell1169
@jerrell1169 Год назад
Yeah. Toward the end you can see a gilded gold or maybe bronze pedestal in one of the blocks. Each has a doorway so it’s possible they intended access (someone has to clean the statues, after all).
@sean.durham999
@sean.durham999 Год назад
I think you got it right. It was obviously going to be a Buddhist shrine and that golden Buddha was to be placed in the alcove shown at 7:54. If Chris is right about the age, and I think he's not too far off, it would be the case that someone or a group, with cash to burn, started to build this shrine at some point in the 80s and then the money ran out during the economic down turn that occurred in the mid 90s that Japan has never recovered from. During construction only one of the statues ever got delivered. It's a little sad to see someone's vision left unfinished and abandoned like that.

If I had to take a guess, considering the massive buddha statue, I feel like that was supposed to be some form of temple. I've seen a number of brutalist (100% made of concrete) buildings for churches or for temples in a number of different countries. That's the best guess I have. As to why they didn't finish it, it could be one or a number of factors: - They simply ran out of funding - There was a conflict in the planning or construction; with the client, the construction company, the government, or the local town's zoning bylaws, etc. - They had supply issues. That's a considerable amount of concrete they used, I imagine that didn't come cheap or easy to transfer depending on where you can get concrete in Japan. - Workers strike - Politics or red tape

I googled it in Japanese. It seems that you are right. An elderly man paid to build it decades ago to pray for world peace, to thank Japanese people who contributed a lot to the rapid development of the country after world war two, and so on. However, he passed away before it was finished. And no one continued to fund the project so it stopped. Yet, it's written this is not an abandoned building because some unknown organization or people somehow manage it like cutting the grass.

This abandoned structure is called a stupa and although traditionally built out of stone; it is thought to have been built out of ferro-concrete to save money. The golden buddha you found is meant to be housed in one of the upper levels. (perhaps on the empty plinth at 7:56) Oh and that red outbuilding could of been a storage shed for construction materials. Stupa - A circular structure usually containing relics (would explain the statue) and used as a place to meditate Another video of the site by an urban explorer that visits various places in Japan: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QN7vBoQk_2A.html

If anyone is wondering what that giant building is @ 0:02 it's called the Sky Tower 41 in Yamagata Prefecture, which is the tallest building in Yamagata. Normally zoning retrictions in Japan prevent buildings like this from being constructed in certain areas, but this building was exempt because the developer was related to the Governor of Yamagata at the time.

My best guess would be that its a Buddhist Stupa that was left unfinished. Stupa's are typically like burial mound buildings containing holy relics. It does seem like it would have a second floor which I do not believe is typical of a stupa so maybe it had some observatorium functions. Either way clearly someone wanted a holy site to a sake buddha and ran out of funding. Can't wait to see more Haikyo, these are always so interesting.

Parroting what others have already mentioned, it's most probably an unfinished stupa. The inner structure makes me even sure that it was supposed to be a stupa. While I don't know why it was abandoned, I would guess due to religious reasons and out of respect, they decided to not completely abandon it and keep the Buddha statue there anyway. While it is very creepy, the fact that the statue still has so many offerings makes it somewhat bittersweet and beautiful.

the thing i love about abandoned buildings is that it's never just the building with maybe some rubble and vegetation growing around it, there are so many objects which you would think were used by someone in the past and you wonder what couold've happened that led to those objects being left behind, you start thinking about the emotions of the people who, in that moment, had to leave them behind. Imagine finding an old teddy bear, all raggedy and shredded apart but it's there, probably when a sad little child lost it in the rush of having to go away, or kitchen appliances that supposedly someone was using at the time of leaving, or an old picture frame with the glass broken and the picture missing. It's like seeing a photograph of a moment of intense sadness, which you can fully explore.

I know this isn't really related to your video, but after seeing you in that Chess Boxing match, and all the support I've seen from other creatrors I watch, I can't help but feel happy and proud for Chris and how far he's come after all these years! Keep up the stellar work!

Chris's videos are probably the best produced on RU-vid, the drone shots are amazing.
