Think of it as the 2010s downfall but on a more extreme scale. Things started to go bad in 2016 (global terrorism surge, dead celebrities, extreme political correctness and god awful movies) and continued to worsen for several years until shit really hit the fan in 2020. Now imagine the same thing but you have a fairly primitive understanding of technology, medicine, etc and you get hit with a volcano, famine and disease outbreak all within a few years.
