Enjoy my flight trip report on one of America's smallest commercial airlines, Southern Airways Express, from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Imperial County Airport (IPL) in El Centro, California. The flight was an awesome and unique experience on a tiny nine seat Cessna Grand Caravan turboprop aircraft!
The views of southern California were stunning from only 9,000 feet. And extra cool: you can watch the pilots and all instruments in action since there are no doors or closed-off cockpit like in a traditional flight.

Want to know what it's like to fly Southern Airways Express from LAX to IPL? Then here's my trip report!
Tips for flying:
-Plan to arrive 1.5 hours early since you must check-in at the ticket counter in-person. There is NO online check-in.
-You can check two bags for free.
-There is only one person manning the ticket counter, so be patient and kind.
-You'll report to Terminal 6 in LAX, next to Alaska Airlines, for check-in and departure.
So, how much legroom does Southern Airways Express have? A lot! I'm 6'1" and I could easily stretch and get comfortable. The seatbelts are also across your chest, like a car. So that's much more comfortable.

Thank you for all the information in your "description" under the video. I didn't realize that you'd have that much leg room, and the seatbelts are like car seatbelts. All these little details are really interesting. 👍

Beautiful, excellent video!!!!!! ❤😊Thank you for making this video. It's a firsthand experience of Southern Airways. 🛩🛩🛩 They're "Mokulele Airlines" in Hawaii, and I can see why they're so popular there for all the islands. Nice flight!! Landing in Yuma there with the farmlands, reminds me of landing at Oxnard Airport in Ventura County along the farmlands.

@McFuzzTravels I know that Southern operates in O'Hare and Dulles with Caravans, but the thing is that these airports have whole different runway configurations that allow even slow aircrafts to operate without disrupting the in- and outflow of airliners. However, LAX, with its configuration and its location, must be a heck of challenge for ATC to accommodate such small traffic.

So, a Southern Airways Cessna Caravan loses power just after takeoff at Dulles International Airport. It’s safe landing on a highway, was just as impressive as the “miracle on the Hudson” some 15 years ago. Kudos to the pilots. I am sure Captain Sullenberger is impressed. Unfortunately that emergency landing also shows the “Achilles Heel” of single engine aircraft. In commercial aviation, engine failures are more common than pilots becoming incapacitated. And yet, Southern Airways is planning to use a plane with two pilots, but only one engine here at Williamsport. And it is not like Southern Airways doesn’t have twin engine planes in its fleet. They do. Perhaps if they offered fewer flights, but with more capacity, they could use them at Williamsport. Finally, 20 years ago or so, scheduled commercial flights at the Williamsport airport used Beech 90 King Air turbo-props It was a small twin engined plane and carried 9 passengers or so. And the Beech 90 King Air is still being produced.

Fascinating! And you bring up a good point: only one engine is concerning. No room for error. I do remember the 2014 incident in Hawaii with Mokulele that left one dead after the single engine died after takeoff, with a loud bang to boot. Scary stuff. Thanks for watching!
