It is too true about the white steenbras. My first one was a 7kg model that I shot in the neck. It still almost tore out the shaft. Better luck next time and amazing video, keep em coming🔥

PS: man, True Hotties really are one of two variants, the one we get in the western Cape which is a Hottentot fish and the blue hottentot you`d get out much deeper in the eastern cape, bronze bream is family of the two but not a hottentot fish, same as Jan bruin and Romans who are also family of the breams, I get that it is a colloquial name in PE but there is a huge difference. Bronze bream like the one you saw earlier in the dive probably is multiple decades old, slow growing so best not to put too much pressure on them, hotties like what you get in the wc are numerous and not as slow growing so you could go ham.

Interesting! Makes sense why their daily bags limits are different.

Never missed a shot. . . always hit. . . something, sometimes rock, sometimes kelp, sometimes reef. . .and every now and then a fish, to my surprise of course. . . lol, jokes!

Great Video, and don't be surprised if the fish is still alive and well, these things recover from crazy wounds, I`ve seen it myself.

Nice vid. I'll respectfully disagree with your philosophy on missed shots and pushing your limits though. I aim to push my limits as a freediver (when it's safe) and immerse myself in the environment, push my limits trying to get close to fish, push my limits seeing new fish, bigger fish, push my limits finding new reef, but not with the killing. Injuring a fish is the worst feeling, especially a beautiful old fish, a prime breeding specimen (no blame on Brian, it happens to all of us). Rather watch a school swim past. By the time I shoot I want to be certain of a kill, or as close as I can get. I make plenty of mistakes, I get excited, but I definitely hit way more than I miss.

I understand you completely. The feeling of injuring a fish has to be one of the worst parts of spearfishing but taking risks (calculated ones) is how we explore human our limits. How do you know if you can shoot a 6m long shot if you have only every shot 2m shots? Sometimes the fish with never give you a sure shot and you will have to take a harder shot. As you improve by taking several harder shots they soon become easier shots...My point being that improvement comes with risk. In this example Brian took a longer shot than he usually takes, and yes, this time the shot came loose (in my opinion it was more the fault of a hasty fight than a bad shot that lost the fish), but because he has experienced this, next time he is presented with a similar opportunity, he will do better!

@@toc.theoceanchannel if the fish doesn't give us a sure shot, I'd argue that's a failure of our hunting or diving skills, and that's where we should push our limits. If you take a quick long shot, you'll never know if the fish would have swum away and back again, maybe if your body language was calm enough, your eyes were averted, your breathhold was so good you could relax for another minute down there. We're saying the same thing, but in different ways. We both (all three) want to get that steenbras, but we differ in which limits to push. I'm not looking to be billy the kid underwater, that's not a skill I'm interested in. I'd love to be a great diver and hunter though, one day. And by, for instance, always aiming for a kill shot, whether or not I get one, I'll train my marksmanship. Those limits, I'm happy to push. As much as I enjoy your videos, the best divers in my opinion are those that go deep, stay long, explore uncharted areas; that watch a lot, shoot a little, and almost always stone their fish. (and if I'm sounding scanctimonious, I've done my share of unecessary damage to marine our environment. I've injured fish, shot undersized fish, and shot the wrong species by mistake, including endangered ones. Especially when I was starting out. I may be a worse diver than you. But you have a platform, young divers will look up to you, and they may adopt your values.)
