When Prince passed away, I started playing his music by ear and realized that besides the genius of his writing, he wrote songs that were fun to play. He loved playing so many instruments and did a great job writing this track. Great job playing it!

Hi! Great video and playing. I've been working through your transcription, transcribing it myself for six-string, and I've realised that he's playing with all strings a whole tone lower! That's how he plays the low As and A#s, marked as '?'s in your tab.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for the kind words! Yes, he's playing with the bass tuned one town down, A D G C F Bb. Often gospel bass players tune 1ST or 1T down

Awesome sound and skillful play! Just got myself a bb605 too but i'm still learning. Did you change the pickup? Also, what's the mid cut knob use? You use 50 50 Bridge and Neck Pickup for that song?

Thanks for the nice words! I'm pretty much all flat with eq etc., mid cut knob I keep it 'off', not cutting any mids I mean, pickups are original, this bass is a great instrument considering its price so just work on improving your tone and technique and I'm sure you'll enjoy it so much. It's very versatile and can be super aggressive, all the best!

Thanks! Yes I didn't tune down, I learnt this in a few days, I transcribed it first but in the end I knew it by heart.

Fantastic job! As guitar player that’s just bought a bass a would like to play this kind of style, do you need low action or decent amount of relief? Or is it all in the fingers? Again fantastic to watch well done 👍

Hi, many thanks for the comment. Unless you don't keep the action really really high or really really low, small differences don't matter that much, yes you have a different feeling of the instrument but for example I don't like an action too low as otherwise I feel everything is too 'forced' and wood/strings can't move/vibrate enough. Very important is to work on the right hand, because from there you'll have full control of your playing and of your tone too. I spend a lot of time with my students on really mastering the movement of the right hand, if interested I'm currently teaching online. All the best!

Hi Mel, thanks for the comment. Watch the whole video of Andrew with Scott in which he explains a bit about how he grew up and how he learnt the slap technique, it's just normal slap and pop but mastered at the best level with his unique sound signature.

Ho trascritto prima e di solito siccome quando trascrivo e poi studio, ascolto tante volte, finisco sempre con impararmi a memoria tutto, forse questa sbirciavo ogni tanto la parte perché sono tante note, cmq non ti saprei dire con esattezza, consiglio però a tutti di trascrivere perche a me ha aiutato un sacco, e continuo a farlo! @@EdoardoBombace referring to the measures. They are numbered on your transcription…#86 and #94 the notes drop to A# (or Bb) so I was just wondering how it could be played without tuning down, since B is the lowest written (and sounding) note on “standard” 5 string tuning.

@@EdoardoBombace i wonder if writing out notation in F (1 flat) for standard B tuning and indicating play with drop Bb tuning would make things simpler. (Don’t have to navigate all those courtesy accidentals in F#)
