Please please please after you've finished wwdits, watch Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. It's got the same lighthearted found family vibe, amazing writing and the actors - especially Samuel Barnett's performance as Dirk Gently - are SO GOOD. It's like, if Taika Waititi wrote and directed Sherlock but Sherlock doesn't know anything at all, is incredibly socially awkward (in a loveable way) and him and everyone around him has weird superpowers. At first nothing makes sense, you've got this case and different clues and strings and it seems like there's no way these things are related in any way. But in the end everything adds up and makes sense. Everything is connected. Even after rewatching it 15 times you'll still find new things hidden in the background or dialogue. It's just... so good. One of my main influences as a screenwriter and director myself. Sorry for just dropping this in here in the comment section but I think you'd thoroughly enjoy it. (Also to end this novel, loved your video and will go hit that subscribe button!)
(But don't look up the main director/writer, he's not somebody to look up to. His career ended during the rise of the Me Too movement for obvious reasons. But the staff writers, the executive producer, the actors... They're all super sweet, down to Earth and so close with the fanbase. They are what truly made the show so genius.)
... Had to come back because I just can't shut up: What We Do In The Shadows (movie) has another spin-off which is "Wellington Paranormal". It's another mockumentary which follows the two police officers Minogue and O'Leary (those who were called to investigate the vampire house) on their daily patrols and encounters with all sorts of supernatural creatures. Ghouls, ghosts, demons, Satan, a fatberg, aliens, a cursed jacket... It's absolutely genius. And if you haven't seen it yet: Our Flag Means Death. So much natural queer representation and Taika Waititi as a pirate. Again a comedy, light-hearted with serious undertones, written by David Jenkins. 15/10. Aaaand Flight Of The Conchords, written by and starring Jemaine Clement (who also wrote and directed and starred in wwdits) and Bret McKenzie. Comedy, again. Though it's more of the dry kiwi humour (which personally I absolutely love but I don't know about you). It's also got Rhys Darby who stars alongside Waititi in Our Flag Means Death and appears in the wwdits movie as werewolf Anton. With a werewolf Anton cameo in Wellington Paranormal as well. Plus Kristen Schaal who in wwdits plays the role of The Guide and in Flight of the Conchords a stalker/friend/fan named Mel and in Our Flag Means Death Antoinette. (It's all interconnected through that friend group, they just pull each other into all their respective projects and I love it 😂) I will try to shut up now and cage in my nerdy and film loving self. But like... I don't know if it's okay or maybe weird to ask but any chance you'd like to be friends with a lesbian (me) who's (way too) enthusiastic about TV shows and movies and screenwriting and all that jazz? If not that's also totally fine, then just feel free to ignore the question. Cheerio 🦆✨
