Having Jet Thrusters in front of the tank is use humans using 20% of our brain. Those thrusters would not be able to help a tank traveling on tracks go any faster, so why not use them as forward facing flamethrowers instead?
Its a transforming alien fantasy robot. Ofc those thrusters can boost him forward. Having the thrusters in the back is 50% brainpower. And the COCKpit is just a sign of him being an absolute chad having no regard for autobots around him

This is what happens when G1 accuracy is implemented waaaaaay too much in the modern figures, you get errors like Blitzwing's tank wrong. Also weirdly enough Chris Mcfeely never mentioned the mistake.
I always knew bringing back G1 was a mistake... Good thing tho that I was still a Beast Wars fan till' the very end since Rise of the Beasts is coming next year lol.

This mistake reminds me a lot of the scene in New Hope where the Stormtrooper hit his head on the door. The original cut never had a bonk noise and subsequent special editions of the film added in the sound effect to the scene. I think it's just kind of funny how artists and creators embrace these kinds of mistakes decades later. I feel like gives more personality
According to all known laws of aviation, there' no way the Blitzwing jet should be able to fly. Its tiny wings are too small to get its fat little kibble off the ground. The triple changer of course flies (or stays primarily in robot mode) anyway because Decepticons don't care what humans think are aesthetically unappealing.
Blitzwing is suppose to transform into a mig-31 so he takes the russian philosophy of aviation, which is that anything can fly if you put big enough thrusters on it.
The only problem I have with the nose cone on the tank mode is that it sticks out a bit too much for my liking. Even in the G1 cartoon and mistransformed toy it didn’t stick out that much. If it had a way to collapse in just a bit more, I wouldn’t have minded it. But it doesn’t.... The junk under the jet mode is pretty inexcusable no matter how you look at it though.
As I pointed out, you know what's even worse about the jet under wing junk? Take a look at the shape of the folded treads. Now take a look at both the show model and the original toy. Doesn't it look like Legacy's jet junk is facing the wrong way, the angled side facing the back than the front? If you see it, you won't be able to unsee it. If it could flip around, the angle would face forwarda nd at least be more in line with the shape of the wings AND THUS be MORE toon accurate. Now, I wonder where they could have gotten the extra parts to make the rotation joints on those tank hinges possible....
Maybe fan transformation can fix it who knows I stopped buying toys years ago sold my transformer toys yeah it’s hard sell transformer toys regardless what they g1 other series hard find sellers buy them mint in box or loose complete don’t matter

I feel like they should’ve used more elements from Blitzwing’s Animated incarnation. Yeah the tank and jet modes still look silly but not in the same way as he does here.
This is like how the cone heads were originally meant to be like the rest of the seekers but the photos used for concept art had them missed transformed and now it doesn’t look right if the cone heads don’t have a jet tip on the top of there heads
Here's the funny thing about them trying to be toon accurate, even forgetting that the entire problem is that the cartoon was wrong to begin with. They didn't even fully succeed at it. They tooned so hard they actually failed at it. The jet, for example. Take a loot at the shape of the tank bulk beneath the wings. If they could only rotate 90 or flip 180, they'd be more in line with the shape of the wings, and therefore at least look more like the shape of the toon model's under-wing junk. It'd still be a horrendous mess of kibble, but at least there was more effort to match the onscreen design that otherwise people are using to justify both it and the tank COCKpit. For the cockpit itself, the toon model is actually not bad about it and kinda cool. But as already repeated before, it sticks out too much. Furthermore, the head is so visible. Maybe the hands could have been sacrificed for a few double hinges that allowed the cockpit to collapse further into the tank and the tank treads' folded shape to be more in line with the toon model. I don't doubt that the toy is good, but I still have to question for myself if it's worth the $70-80 he's going for. Especially after I just got LG59 last year in case I wouldn't like Legacy Blitzwing.
@@Gei4Mei WELP! Fast forward to Feb 2024, and I caved, though only because I managed to get one brand new for $34. And, you know what, for that price, barring the need to sand down the tabs for the leg extensions and the ones holding the arms in tank/robot mode, I feel quite a bit less remorse than I did Astrotrain.. Honestly, the modes no longer bother me as much. My imagination is straining (because it isn't being used for....other...things. We speak the same cultured language, you know what I mean by that), but I AM able to cope. - just imagined the jet as not a terrestrial jet, but a flying space tank in the vein of the Mega Winger from Power Rangers In Space (Silver Ranger's Zord). - for the tank dongus...when I extended the nosecone tip as the first step, I got struck with a good idea. That isn't a COCKpit, that's another more awesome penetrating phallic symbol: A DRILL! YEP! Blitzwing's tank mode now has a drill tank configuration!!! Am gonna miss the robot height, but...eh, I'll be ok. He's actually frustrating me a bit less tan the TR mold, coz, admittedly, he was starting to feel unwieldy. Especially being unable to keep the Titan Master in one compartment between alt modes. Can send some pics of the "drill tank" and the "cope space jet" ideas on Twitter.
@@Gei4Mei Thew brought it up in his G1 Megatron review. Basically if you look at the original toy and ignore the show he has this kinda 3 pronged crown helmet like Galvatron, but the TV Design incorporated the gun kibble around the head to make his classic style helmet with the crown becoming his forehead and the negative space becoming the "Angry Eyebrows" you see on all his G1 inspired looks.
Titans Return Blitzwing has the thrusters facing forward in tank mode, and less kibble under the jet wings too. Sure the new one has a better bot mode, but if all you crave is a robot, wait and see if Hasbro do a R.E.D. version.
I just wish the TR Blitzwing hadn't been made into a Headmaster, as well. The damnable thing is, all those Triple-Changer Headmasters have push-buttons to deploy their spring-loaded "shoulder pylons," so why couldn't they have just done that with a pop-up noggin? Baffling.
I don't know if anyone has yet pointed out, but great job addressing this figure from an art-world standpoint/perspective. It's a refreshing direction for a toy-review video, not typically seen or heard.

As much as people like to shit on Blitzwing's alt modes, I feel like it gives him more character. He's supposed to be this military juggernaut, so if he were just some perfectly slimmed down jet that was also a tank it wouldn't give him the heft he requires to look intimidating. If that weren't a fighter jet and were instead some other form of military aircraft, that'd look like something I wouldn't wanna fuck with in the sky. The cock-pit also gives the tank a neat vibe that makes it look sort of futuristic, as well as the thrusters at the back.
Yeah the robot mode looks good but the other two modes look goofy. Like the nose cone, fine it's "g1 accurate" so it's good for that design, and even though it's ugly it is accurate and that's what the figure is going for. Even though I think it makes the toy a whole lot worse fine, I can maybe give you that. But that is no excuse for the head to just be visible like that. Like you can see right in the figure and the head is yellow so it sticks right out against the purple. The head being concealed is one of the bare minimum things a transformer has to get right and this just failed. Like that isn't an angle people won't be looking at often or anything it's the very front of the vehicle mode. And the jet mode is even worse. Those tiny wings barely just out from that brick of kibble. Like that looks like a failed parade float. The wings look like someone took a big brick and drew triangles onto the top. And as an animator animating this thing's jet mode would be absolute hell. Like because it's all squished into a ball it would be so heavy on a flight stand. Also I've seen the whole fan mode of the kibble turning into a "flight stand" but for animation purposes that's even worse. Now if I want to animate the jet mode I have this giant hunk of plastic stuck to the bottom of the jet, and I don't want to have to remove that to animate it because I risk breaking the figure so I'm stuck. Over all I'll have to hard pass on blitz wing. Normally a figure with one bad mode is fine, because that's like 1/2 of the figures modes. But with a triple change to have 2/3 modes be just not good that's a majority. And for $50 buying a transformer where most of it's modes are bad, it just gives me no reason to buy it.
I did mostly buy him for his robot mode. I think they really needed to take this guy back to the drawing board cause like u said, there’s a lot of other small issues that other figures don’t have. He’s really sloppy

I actually like how Blitzwing's jet mode is different. Basically a jet biplane. The nub at the front in the cartoon never really bothered me since chalked it up as a consequence of the triple transformation. It's just that the toy doesn't make the cockpit as flush with the body as the cartoon.
@@Gei4Mei Yeah it's a recurring thing with triple changers in general. Most of the G1 toys with just one alt mode were either highly simplistic or had all the kibble on the bot. So making one with two alt modes with the engineering they had back then, and make it look passable was a minor miracle. Even now it's hard to make triple changer figures that don't show obvious parts of the opposite alt mode. Though, I now consider it endearing when an alt mode has vestigial bits of the other alt mode.
G1 accuracy to a fault. How can anything be totally G1 accurate when the show itself was incredibly inconsistent? That's why, to me, most G1 fans love the IDEA of the design of these characters, not the objective designs themselves, because they were too I consistent to have one definitive idea of the character. Which is why G1 can be revisited so many times. It's also why some love MP44 over MP10 and vice versa; both of them represent a perspective on the idea of G1 Optimus, but both are G1 accurate. TL;DR: It's very silly to fight over details and shapes when the source material was laughably inconsistent. Let's enjoy our own ideas of who these characters are and enjoy the figures that best represent our perspectives.
Sadly, the true "source materials" are often glossed over amongst many Geewunners, and designers attempting to cater to that crowd.......typically referencing the [inconsistent & flawed] cartoon show as the "bible" for "G1 Accuracy". This, in itself, to me, is arguably laughable and disappointing, at the same time.

The Legacy Toy was designed by the lead masterpiece designer. It’s unequivocally meant to be G1 in its design, warts and all. There has already been three other modern voyager figures that have taken different routes with the deign, there was no need for another.
Help me out here. We had the generations BW that was just awful. The TR version was a little better but the jet modes floppy wings and skimpy seat in tank mode for the titan master made it crappy. Not counting the legacy BW that's only two previous voyager class figures. Where is this third one? I for one admit the new Blitzwing isn't perfect but honestly you're never going to get one.

The jet would make more sense to be in front to turn the motor that turns the treads, it then would be in a front engine rear-wheel-drive configuration. If this bothers you so much there other versions of him where his cockpit disappears completely when he is in tank mode. They also have better looking plane modes too.
No way I'm buying the purple peened tankburger at RRP. I love the LG one, even if he is a Headmaster. Will have to see Legacy Blitz at beefy reductions ot seduce me to the dark side. Nicely informative video, btw. Good work!
As much as the Tank Dick bugs me, it’s nothing compared to the tread kibble. Just doing something about that would make the other eccentricities (the turret in jet mode and cockpit in tank mode) a million times more bearable!
even with it being inspired by the g1 cartoon the cockpit still sticks out way too much there should've been a slider so the cockpit for go back a bit more in tank mode
While I knew about the tank being backwards the "negative spacs" aspect is very very interesting. This sort of perpetuated mistake is why I'm a proponent of concentrating on Modes above Show/Toy accuracy.

If you have ever been in or near or seen a tank you would know that the direction the turret is facing in relation to the hull of the vehicle is correct in the cartoon and this toy. The part that slopes down is the engine bay door in the front and the part that stops dead and turns down 90 degrees is usually part of the gas tank system and has a crew entry hatch that folds right down into a ramp, not trying to poke a hole in the video just speaking from experience because i used to build tanks and combat vehicles and this video kind of baffled me when i watched it
I just got mine a few days ago, and I am not bothered by it one bit. Triple changers always have their fair share of jankiness to them. Hell, none of the live action Triple changers are an all in one figure. They usually end up making 2 figures of the same bot with the Alt Alt mode. Drift is a good example. One figure turns into a car, the other figure a heledrone. Forget the names of the in the Bumblebee movie, but same thing. So for a figure, trying to emulate what was saw on our TV screens when we were children, and has 2, not perfect but very passible alt modes, it's a damn fine figure, and a very welcomed addition to my collection. I am trying to focus on boosting my Decepticon/Predators roster, so Blitzwing was a must.

Honestly I don't think having the jet in front of the tank was done solely for show accuracy and more of "oh shit, we don't really have a proper way of concealing the entirety of the jet mode, so I guess we'll just have the cockpit stick out in the front since it's technically still accurate"
Except the part that sticks out is a faux-cockpit. The actual jet mode cockpit is on the underside. It could have been solid purple and worked just fine.
At the end of the day I think since the cartoon designed it like that in all appearances, the is no reason for them to change it now. The modern G1 toys are all about cartoon accuracy, maybe if they made a Diaclone inspired Blitzwing they could change it.
Ironically the jets in the front could work if they double as flamethrowers like how Blastoff's rockets are Bruticus's flamethrower. It would also be a good reference to Animated Blitzwing's fire gimmick in his tank mode.
Damn, I was hoping you'd mention how the G1 cartoon also screwed up in designing Blitzwing as though the tank Cannon was an antenna on his head, rather than on his back.
1 Just because the cartoon did it doesn't mean it was good or that it should be adhered to like glue. 2 even with that excuse it doesn't work because none of the rest of the tank looks like the cartoon either
Tell me about it, even I think the cartoon itself wasn't even good to begin with either. I'd rather get a Battle Beasts cartoon that's based on Hasbro's short-lived figure line instead.

I’m just getting the word out. As a G1 fan I think its hard to reconcile sometimes because non toon accurate characters like ER Prime are amazing, so I prefer if they mainly use toon accuracy as a base line. In another version of this video, I talked more about that but it distracted from the topic too much
I don't know if this has been mentioned, but someone on the website that dare not speak it's name worked out that the ENTIRE tank part is literally just a backpack attached to Blitzwing by a single hinge joint that if removed results in turning him into a Duocon. I think someone went and converted theirs into a C-Clip attachment.
I've heard a good way to think of the cockpit in tank mode, is to think of it as a battering ram. Blitzwing turns his turret around to the rear, fires up the engines and rams down walls or Autobots with it. Not a perfect solution, but it works.
Honestly, I say if you can't get over the vehicles, if you don't mind a little size discrepancy, get the titans return Blitzwing, he is still amazing, although he is missing a couple of mostly modern articulation points such as ankle pivots. He can also be a little easier to find and perhaps a little cheaper now with the new legacy toy.
I had a joke about that but I cut it from the video. But thats why I focused more on the technical design of the character and less in the depiction in the episodes specifically in
the way I feel is, I like his tank cockput flopping around in front, I think it's kinda cool, albeit perhaps somewhat impractical. The wing undercariage I was a little urked about.... on one hand, I think there was always going to be some junk under the wings cuz where else was it going to go? And I do like his wings to be a little thick, but I do feel like they could've covered it up a little better than they did. That being said... I really want that blitz.
Honestly if you exclude the cockpit in the front, I think Legacy Blitzwing's tank mode is great. For looks alone, this version is definitely better than the Titans Return one. The jet mode admittedly got shafted pretty hard though.
looking at the G1 toy it hides the tank better than the modern legacy one. I think the previous TT Blitzwing had the better vehicle modes, while the legacy one has the better robot mode.

I am upset that the jet mode looks like a jelly biscuit, but the robot mode does look neat. He and Siege Astrotrain suffer from the same problems, honestly. They could be a little taller, and alt modes could have been a little more accurate

And to the left" (what Kennedy's body did in reaction to the shot). Yep. Just like that.
@@Gei4Mei long story short, he's usually shown, even in the animation, with the tank turret on the front, like a kneecap. But the turret is actually supposed to be on the back, where there is a notch in the foot (or the upper leg?) to accommodate it's shape

Well cartoon accuracy seems to be the focus of these guys but... Maybe they could have had the cockpit not stick out as far as it does since it definitely doesn't in the cartoon.
On the bright side there is an upgrade kit for him that fixes it, and it doesn't even partsform for transformation. It definitely shouldn't have been there to begin with though.
