I just tried the all new ID.4 GTX, 300 HP here in Europe. It's really surprisingly good. Suspension/comfort exceeds the Tesla Model Y. Tesla needs to add air-suspension to the Model Y and also adaptive matrix LED and augmented head-up display, or they will be toasted.

I had read from other owners that by disabling the map widget and turning off voice recognition that it speeds up general interface on the infotainment. May be interesting to see a demo of that and if it really works. Theory is by disabling those features you free up processor power.

Another part of the value proposition of the VW is that they have good paint quality, and good fit-and-finish generally. Don't hear this discussed a lot in videos about new EVs, since the focus is on the EV tech understandably, but when you are spending $50k+, things like build quality make you feel better about your purchase IMO
@mamadouaziza2536

Are u even serious? Really? 90% of all EV reviews mention build quality and paint jobs.. EV technology is just a damn battery and nothing else.. All modern cars have touch screens, drive modes, adaptive suspension if on the option list, active cruise, cameras, some self driving features.. Only difference an EV has over a gas car is a battery..

@@mamadouaziza2536, I think what the OP meant, or how I took the comment at least is, besides Tesla's horrific build quality you don't hear it mentioned in other EV reviews. Tesla is the most popular and the build quality is the absolute worst so you hear it A LOT. Also, I agree with wha the OP said about how when we're spending upwards of $50k on a vehicle, build quality really matters quite a bit. Above and beyond the new tech EVs are bringing to the market. You're driving my exact car! I got mine while you were on the other side of the pond. I drove the RWD dealer demo back in march and didn't drive my AWD till I literally bought it and I gotta say, no disappointments. The extra 100HP takes it from "nothin' special" to "ooh this has some zip." It won't snap your neck like a model S plaid but being the least expensive AWD EV on the market, I think it gets a pass for not being 1100HP).

The balance for me is that i'd rather be 300HP, no gas, and don't have to play tetris to load my trunk than 400HP gas and tetris match every time i go to a home improvement store.

Thanks for videos that treat cars as a modern transportation need instead of a precious artifact for enthusiasts. Of course I'd like it to be fun to drive, so I enjoy your thoughts on canyon runs (keep that), but also keep the conversations you have about comfort and living with it as we do 90% of the time: as a transportation appliance. Outside of the ID.4, I really enjoyed your recent Nissan Leaf video because you didn't just evaluate the Leaf. You went further to explain how the leaf could fit into a person's transportation needs. Don't get me wrong, I also like the high-end stuff. I'll never by a Lucid, but I can live vicariously, and that's fun. I'll never buy a Porche, but I liked seeing what it could do. But have a niche of talking about "how this could fit into your life" that is unique and worth preserving.

If you like slow cars with awful infotainment system /touch controls. But at lest it's not made in tent so panel gaps are ok. Another thing is: WV uses pouch cells made by LG. Those should be different than cells used in Bolt or Hyundai Kona. But actual truth will be come clear when WV has build IDs with same quantity as Bolts/Konas.

Exactly the ID.4 AWD I have ordered to replace my current ID.4 RWD (maybe)! I think it was a bit of a miss to launch ID.4 in the US with RWD - while it’s a great car, it lacks the wow-factor that would’ve attracted a lot more attention. Ride height difference is 15mm / 0.6”. Adding to your comments about power limiting - I noticed this on my first drive on the AWD as well, but haven’t experienced any power limiting on my RWD ID.4 until it gets to ~5% SoC. It’s a little strange that the AWD cuts power so much earlier. Should do a RWD vs AWD drag race across varying SoC. Do I need to blast across the country to CO again? 🤔

While this video was done in November 2021, it has been very valuable for me in understanding the ID4, which I purchased 3 weeks ago. It is a 2022 VW ID4 AWD. The dealer wanted to make a deal since the tax incentives changed and the 2022 id4 does not qualify for the tax incentives. Good deal. I previously owned a Leaf and that was a nice EV, and it was very solid. However, it lacked space inside and drove like an EV. The ID4 has a lot of space and is your typical VW. Nothing fancy. The ID4 is a family car while the Leaf is a EV car. I am getting great mileage out of the VW. It is zippy and has a lot of power. Thank you for your reviews.

I like your remarks about the permanent motor in the back and induction one in the front and the reason for that setup.
@chevalde31
@chevalde31 2 года назад
Kyle, you just cannot free wheel the front motor with dual PM synchronous motors to drive an awd such as Ioniq5 in rwd only mode because the front motor will brake with a high self- induced counter force braking the vehicle. The way Hyundai worked around the phenomenon is simply to put a clutch and 1:1 splined coupler ( the « disconnector ») to disengage completely the front motor from the free running front axle. Be aware that most other EV systems like ID.4 use a cheaper induction motor in front that introduces variable slippage depending on torque demand and difficulty to synchronize perfectly front to back axles speeds.

Since you live in Colorado... Something I'd be interested in seeing more of is mini-roadtrip tests going up in to the mountains and. Basically I'd like to see how well the car handles going from home (say in the greater Denver metro area) to Breck and back for a day trip, both in summer and winter. Most current popular EVs should be able to do that roundtrip without a charge in good weather, but probably not in really poor weather (I know you won't be able to do a poor weather test this time of year yet). There are definitely people out there who are EV-hesitant until they can get a car that can make a ski trip without a charging stop. Not a terribly valid reason but still.
@mamadouaziza2536

Make a ski trip without a charging stop? What about a gas car not making a stop at a gas station? Unless the damn ski resort is over 200 miles from a person's house, the person will be stopping for various reasons including using the restroom, gas fill ups and EV charging.. If one only lives 50 to 70 miles from a ski resort (Los Angeles city residence), there is no need to stop for gas or charging.

Reserved my AWD ID.4 July last year and just recently took delivery, about 8 months later. And it was well worth the wait! A good chunk of the better ID.4 reviews were right on the mark, though I think the EV enthusiasts spent a little too much time trying to compare it against a Tesla on purely technical specs. I want a car whos body won't be falling apart and whos paint job will still be good 20 years later. So I think some might have over-emphasized their comparisons against Tesla. The VW group quality really shows in the ID.4. Comfortable, roomy, nice lines, high quality paint (and as soon as my brother adds a ceramic coat, even higher), great seats, responsive steering. Plus all the benefits of a two-motor EV... good starting torque on a hill. I haven't any particular problem with the GUI either, but I do agree that the touch sensitive controls were a bit too much of a stretch and the menu layering needs a redo. It doesn't subtract from the quality of the vehicle though, particularly for me coming from a 22 year old A6 2.7T. I don't feel the need to drive 154 MPH at my age, that was back when I was younger. And I don't need sub-3-second 0-60. And I certainly don't need autonomous driving or even semi-autonomous driving... I love driving! But I'm no slouch either. I'm glad I got the 2-motor version of the car. I only have one complaint... I wanna have a speedometer display. You know, a circular dial with a pointer on it. Digital is fine... a round speedometer on the screen would be perfect. Not a digit 'speed' display that distracts me flipping from 39 to 40 to 39 all the time. I don't quick a quack's ass if I'm a few mph above or below the speed limit. Hey VW! -Matt

I have one. Awesome car. I have a couple minor complaints. Storage capacity around front seats is somewhat limited. I’m used to more storage. Front rear window switches, there are only two, takes getting used to. Non mechanical door latches make getting out of the car a little tricky, you need to time the inside latch opening to get the door open without having to pull the latch twice. Backup rear camera is dark at night, disappointing. And no Birdseye view of car when driving backward (apparently Euro versions have this but US versions don’t…HEY VW GET THIS IMPROVED WITH OTA SW UPDATE! And last but not least, the phone and VW Car-Net integration has been problematic. WiFi hotspot only works with Verizon???? My previous EV was Chevy Bolt. It had a better system, seemed to be less finicky. I’m using phones (have tried three different models) with USB cable. Hoping this settles down but sometimes hands free calling does not work and that REALLY sucks.

SOC display in percent on the small screen should come with the V3 update in Q1/22. V3 also again noticeably increases the performance of the infotainment, improvements in the NAVI, higher charging power that also holds the peak longer, 5-80% is then up to 9 minutes faster, better voice control and many small improvements. VW makes visible progress in the software.

I can't believe Alyssa didn't smack you for the surprise braking test at the end - haha! I've placed an order for an AWD iD4 in Canada based on your videos of RWD iD4. I was considering buying an ICE SUV, but you helped changed my mind. Please consider testing the following & share your thoughts/findings: Brake Regen: How much more brake regen is there on this AWD? I know the RWD has 0.13g on B mode at rear axle, and total of 0.25g when combined with brakes, and then the friction brakes kick in, yes? But in this AWD, does the front motor regen in ADDITION to the rear motor? Since braking is more efficient at the front axle, I hope VW is taking advantage of this and has given the AWD iD4 regen capability at the front motor as well as the rear permanent magnet motor. Although everyone has talked about 170kW peak charging power in the presentation of the ID.5 everyone is talking about 135kW peak but holding that power deeper into the percentage getting it charged from 5-80% in 29 minutes which someone stated that it meant that the car was charging at an average of 120kW, which is really fast for a 400V architecture. But on the other side people have seen MEB cars in the wild charging at 166 kW, so as always, only the first individual tests will tell.
@m.b.5887
@m.b.5887 2 года назад
The peak charging power depends on the installed battery pack. The all-wheel drive model uses a different battery pack than the rear-wheel drive model, even though the capacity is the same. The model with all-wheel drive can be charged with 170 kW at peak. The rear-wheel drive models can only be charged at 135 kW, but the charging curve is better. Overall, charging from 10-80 is 3 minutes shorter with rear-wheel drive.

Kyle, here is a weird request... Is there enough room to fit a bike in the back of the car when the seats are down? I know it comes with a hitch mount, but lets say someone doesn't own a bike rack that can connect to a hitch... I'd love to see if one could fit a bike back there... Thanks!

Not a weird request at all! I have a 29er MTB and storing the bike inside would be nice.

This is an interesting idea and I second it. It would be nice to see a "What goes in it?" video. I agree with testing a bike. What about a Pack-n-Play (the required foldable crib for parents) - does it fit laterally? An eight foot long 2x4 from Home Depot (does it fit down the center with the seats folded?) What draws me to the ID.4 is that it's not precious: it's a thing I can take to the hardware store, my kids can throw up in when they get car sick, and that I can load muddy gear into after a Girl Scout trip.

Seconded, keeping a bike in the car is better security-wise so it's appealing to at least have that capability.

I agree! A "what fits inside" review. Bikes, suitcases, 2x4's, and please add 10ft PVC conduits (all the compact SUVs I gave owned can fit all these).

It definitely can fit a bike inside. I ride a XL Specialized Sirrus and I've had it in the back with the seats down, and a ground cloth draped over the interior. You can also fit excitable Labradoodles in the back seat as well, but I recommend the VW back seat cover if you are going to do that.

I have always loved the ID4...having been a long time CRV owner. My wife and I ended up ordering a Model Y, however, simply because of the charging network. If EA expands or Tesla actually does open up their network....this would definitely get my serious consideration.

If you get a chance to look into traction in the rain, I would love to see that. I'm tired of the lack of traction on my e-Golf in the Seattle rain. I have the exact model/color of ID.4 on order. I would also like to know the range effect of being in constant AWD mode. Thanks!
@tonys9413
@tonys9413 2 года назад
Just an FYI, You’ll not be in constant AWD mode; the front motor only comes on if you need acceleration beyond what the rear motor can give. So, for instance, while driving on the highway the front motor will disengage most of the time.

I'm not surprised ID.4 is good. The little-known (stateside) e-Golf is fantastic (again, not perfect). I would be more interested if it had stronger regen. -- that's buttery smooth on e-Golf.

I would be interested in the comparison between the software version in the 1st edition and this one. I have heard that the early 2021 US ID.4s do not have the sensors for Park Assist but I have heard that 2022 models would. Can you tell if this one has the sensors? In addition, comparing driving characteristics between the RWD and AWD would be good (turning radius and regen level for example). Lastly, I would love a comparison between this version ID.4 and the Model Y.

Thanks for the review. How about a comparison video of AWD id.4 to Tesla Model Y LR? I have test driven only the rear wheel drive id.4 since that's all dealers keep in stock for tests and I have driven the Tesla model Y for a full day. Between those two (with my only 30 minute experience in the id.4), the Tesla seemed in another league. Obviously WAY more performance is the first thing you notice.. but the better and more reliable charging network along with simplicity and speed of the user interface on the Tesla were also vastly superior. Navigation, user Interface, finding EA chargers with route planning with the id.4 was shockingly bad (and slow) in my experience, although id.4 was quieter inside and a little less harsh of a ride. I would like to see a real world range difference between the two at freeway speeds and a test of actual cargo carrying capacity fully loaded to the max with 4 passengers. The Tesla seems to have substantially more cargo space (Frunk, large underfloor storage space and larger appearing behind seat cargo floor space. As a long time and satisfied VW GTI owner I want to like the id.4 more because it's cheaper, but so far (at least based on driving the RWD model id.4) the Tesla is winning for me (especially if the tax credit closes the price gap). A comparison of both vehicles autopilot, traffic assist systems would also be nice to see. I tried the id.4 very briefly and Tesla seemed to work way better in traffic. The VW wasn't bad on the freeway though and I prefer not having to put torque into the steering wheel (Tesla) to let it know you are still there. Another MAJOR concern that would be interesting to hear your view on is thoughts on RESALE value. We know Tesla holds it's value incredibly well. The id.4 scares me in this department. I have a feeling in 3-5 years it won''t hold it's value nearly as well. Tesla sound system was excellent, I didn't even get to try out the id.4 so not sure how it compares.
