Nice job Sam. You are my inspiration. I did a job on my own RR yesterday. I added wheel spacers to the back wheels. That filled up the wheel well nicely! No where as difficult as what you just did, but you have to start somewhere, right? I used a torque wrench for the first time in my life. I feel like a real man now!

How did the alternator swap go in the end? Did you suss out that solenoid valve thingy?

@@SamsMotors apart from previously bodged solenoids it actually went really well and the car is so much quieter since changing the belt, pulleys etc. Interestingly I had that same squeak that you did for the first 15 mins and the oil in the csov. The solenoids can only be bought as a complete vacuum assembly which is probably why the PO botched the repair, luckily a FFRR member had some spare so I snapped them up at a good price. I’m a monkey see monkey do sort of person so if I hadn’t of seen you do it in your vid (several times) I probably wouldn’t have attempted it so thank you and I deffo owe you a beer or twelve ;)

Cheers, it really was fiddly. Ah well, all good experience for future jobs! In theory the electronic dipstick should warn you if the oil gets too low, so you shouldn't have to check it every start manually.

just finished my compressor swap. I watched the vid a few times, but couldn't get enough hand room to remove the two pipes on the compressor. I eventually removed the power steering pump, which was fairly easy once I found the tiny bolt on the rear, and it gave me loads of room. thanks Sam. p.s. I did the alternator, and pulleys and belts at same time. had been putting off the job but when the alternator took a dump, I was forced to do the whole triple whammy!

Yeah I remember them being particularly tight to get to. Good tip on the PAS pump, I should probably have done that myself! Sounds like she will be good to go for a long time now then, happy days!

Good work - I enjoy spannering but my back and hips are struggling now and I have to take regular breaks. I have the luxury of a garage which makes things considerably easier and I can leave it for a while if needed. Not sure if I saw it, but 3/8 flex head ratchets are great for working around things at funny angles along with flex head ratchet spanners (signet)

It is very tough, especially without a garage or lifting facilities. But we get it done. I have a long 3/8 flex head which is great, and a few Halfords flex head ratchet spanners too - also great. Jobs like this always require a bit of thought into tool selection - some stuff just won't fit or reach properly.

Yeah it's amazingly common! Not worth just replacing the valve on a 200k mile compressor though.

Any experience with the heated cooled seats? Source of your workshop manual? Great informative videos. I picked up a 2012 HSE and it's been in the shop for over a month as someone Jerry rigged the high pressure fuel pump (5l v8) which had a stripped bolt. Engine out and large bill to come. Wish me luck as the journey continue!

No, mine only has the heated seats which is a different system to the heated and cooled which use Peltier units. The Peltiers often fail necessitating replacement.

I had p38 when I use to be in Atlanta 99, 01 petrol and honestly great truck great truck the only thing I honestly think was kinder difficult to get to was the starter most thing was in yr face

Well done Sam!! Perseverance paid off!! I had mine done at Rovertune last November. Done a few of the lighting upgrades you recommended too! Need to decide about reversing lights Just arrived in Wales, perfect way to do 280miles. Avg’d 33mpg at 70odd so pretty happy with that. Btw what happened with your rear air suspension bags. Did you manage to return the faulty ones??

Cheers Tristan. Do you mind me asking what Rovertune charged for the A/C job? It would help me feel a lot better about my battered hands and bruised ribs from leaning over the slam panel 😂 33mpg at 70 is great, can't complain at that. I got a full refund from Aerosus, but long story short I ended up buying another pair from them which are on now and working fine, no leaks. Think I possibly got unlucky with that first pair.

@@SamsMotors it was around the £800 mark with limited warranty. Which I thought was pretty reasonable. I did have it booked in with my local AC guy but when he had a look said he couldn't do it. Funnily enough he was same price as Rovertune. Ah OK, fair enough. Least that got sorted in the end. 👍 Got my nice new coolant reservoir fitted now, can actually see the level 🤦‍♂️ Power steering fluid done as well so I think that's all the fluids done👍 next up is a service in July 😊

Waiting for the bonus tear-down of the pump video. My 200,000 miler, has weak AC cooling, but had gas in, and with a fresh kwikfit Regas, -was no better, (so no charge for the regas!) so basically I get a cool blow from the vents, but not a great volume of air, and it’s slow to change actual interior temp. With dials and rotary knobs set to cool, and even with max AC pushed, it’s not great. Could this compressor valve be the answer?

Sam great videos question what brought you to the pump ?? Had air con gas topped up but its not kicking in put iid tool on and pump pressure was wild 298.5 then re did it again 198.0 now showing 0000.0 thinkingbits low pressure switch amu help Sam

Mine took ages for the AC to start working (20 mins sometimes) and then stopped getting any cool air. I had mine regassed too but didn't make any improvement. I bought a set of gauges (see in vid) and checked the pressures while running which confirmed compressor inop.

Hi Sam - Normally mechanics recommend that when replacing a AC compressor its best to replace the Expansion Valve, Condenser, Evaporator and the 2 valves. Were you sure that all the other parts were working fine when you changed the Compressor ? Pls excuse my poor knowledge of these things but I am beginning to learn what one can expect in costs when your AC stops cooling. Mine just did so now trying to get the best cost effective fix. Seems when you don’t do your gas and compressor oil refills done regularly the compressor runs dry and this causes it to grind on the walls and small particles can get stuck in the expansion valve and the condenser so if you are just replacing the compressor will the cooling be okay ? Your expert guidance is much appreciated brother 😊

Hi Trevor, In fact, the garage that degassed and regassed the system for me did point out that normally they would replace the whole system when the compressor fails. This is because normally when a compressor fails it generates lots of swarf or metal particles as it breaks down. However with these variable compressors, the common failure mode is different and it doesn’t result in any swarf generation. The refrigerant control valve (on the back of the compressor) was the failure in my case and indeed in most cases for these cars. So because of that, I elected not to replace the other components in the system. However, I will likely replace the condenser and dryer before next summer on the recommendation of the mechanic who said it was restricting the flow of refrigerant when he was gassing it up.

Thanks for sharing the experience of changing the A/C compressor. Likely to have to do this on my 3.6 in the near future and while I appreciate the the plumbing is different your approach is very helpful. Out of curiosity, where did you source the new compressor ?

It's probably fairly similar on the 3.6, think it's in the same place on the engine 👍 New compressor was BNIB off eBay, I got a bargain as it was just listed as a "Nissens 890123" rather than the Land Rover part number.

Two suggestions. Wear nitrile gloves they don't affect feel and protect hands. Also if you put a drop of oil on bolts they go in much easier.

The trouble with nitrile gloves is that they get destroyed in about 2 minutes on jobs like these. Anything thicker than them and you can't feel what you're doing 🤷‍♂️. So I just put up with the cuts and bruises 😂

@@SamsMotors I shall dedicate a day and start at 9am to give plenty of time. Looking at the workshop manual, it suggests exactly what you did - just removing the airbox and charge hose. I'll probably do a coolant change at the same time, which also looks a pig to do on the 4.4! Grab some palm gloves! They're hand savers doing jobs on these cars and cheap enough to chuck after the job is done.

@@garycooper348 definitely sensible to set a day aside for it. I'm genuinely surprised the workshop manual doesn't suggest at least removing the fan and cowl. Having said that, the most difficult bit was reaching the pipe connections on the pump - bloody awkward! Air con is still lovely and cold though so it's been worth it this summer. Good call on the gloves, will order up a pack. Let me know how you get on!

I did it over two days, but in hours probably around 6-8hrs total. I think it may actually have been quicker to do it “by the book” and remove the fan and shroud to give better access.

There are two options, the rear A/C is a pretty rare option, I think only seen on certain Autobiography and Ultimate editions which had the individual rear seats. Definitely only the normal system on mine, with vents and controls in the back for fan speed/temp.

I have to assume this is a joke, or are you not capable of finding out that the 4.4 TDV8 (clearly stated in the title) was only made from 2010-2012, and by stating the year (2011 by the way) it gives you absolutely no additional useful information?

Not really, Land Rover don't make air con compressors, and this AC compressor had done 200k miles and it's a pretty normal failure on any make of car. 🤷‍♂️
