Many of you guys who have been watching my R710 build series of videos have contacted me about the SAS cables to connect the backplane to the H200 HBA. These are Dell P/N N170M and P110M. I sold these cables at my eBay store, but have since sold out. Unfortunately, I have not been able to source more of these cables and many of you have sent me messages asking when I might get more. Seeing that people needed a solution, I decided to go searching for an alternative solution. I went out and bought several sets of cables that I thought might be a close match and after some trial and error testing, I found some cables that I think will serve as a nice alternative SAS cable solution for the R710.
In this video, I'm going to show you how these alternative SAS cables will install in the R710, talk about some of the drawbacks of using these cables, as well as some of the advantages of using these alternative SAS cables over the Dell factory cables. I hope the result of my search will benefit you guys and help you out with your R710 builds. :-)
You can buy a set of these SAS cables from me here: ebay.to/3qB1mkZ
If you'd like to get a H200 pre-flashed to IT mode LSI firmware, and set correctly to work in the integrated storage slot of Dell 11th generation servers, check it out here: ebay.to/2N6PCZT

Thanks ... I bought these and the H200 Card for my R710 from Art of Server ebay. I can now see drives greater than 2TB so extremely happy. Minor dramas when SAS B couldn't detect, swapped the cables, but i think the cable was not seated correctly. So satisfying to see it boot with the larger capacity drives. Now I only have rebuild the UnRaid box :)

I would note that the factory Dell cables for an H200 do not have right angle connectors on the SAS card end. That's only when you have the H700 card installed. The H700 is a full height card and there is not physically the space to get straight connector in which is probably why Dell came up with the right angled versions. Well you might be able to force it but I was not willing to do that so had to hunt down some of the right angle cables. Cost more than the H700 cards did. I have been modifying the specification of a couple of now spare R710's that had been purchased at a different time so that it matched a homogeneous cluster of R710's that we still use at work in production. Sure they are old but we can tolerate a complete node failure without loss of service and I now have extra nodes in the cluster. Really useful videos to help me nail down what parts I needed to purchase and how to get that dam plastic bit on the side of the case off to route the new SAS cables.

Had I known you were looking... I found them a few months ago. I tucked the excess cable in the small void between chassis and dvd bay.. looks great

That's a nice idea to handle the excess cable. Thanks man!

Could you show us what the error looks like if you have cables that make the controller report an error?

Thanks, we got a used R710 from ebay few weeks and I was able to setup the virtual disk and installed Windows Server 2019. But, not sure what happened, it is stopped working and I can't even get into the BIOS now, can anyone comment on this? Please let me know if you want more details

Maybe explain what you mean by "can't even get into the BIOS now" ? The system won't POST? Or it begins POST and gets stuck?

Hello Your channel is very helpful and I enjoy watching it. I have a question for you. If you connect the SFF 8087 cables to the H200 controller in IT-MODE in this Dell R710 server, do you connect the wires as in the recording, i.e.: BACKPLANE-A to H200 PORT A and BACKPLANE-B to H200 PORT B After logging in to the H200 controller, do you match the slot numbers with the numbers on the front of the server? I have that if I connect the SAS cables as you did in the video, I have different slot numbers. For example, where there is slot 0 on the front of the server, after inserting the disk, I have information on the controller that it is slot 4, and where there is slot 5 on the front of the server, after inserting the disk, I have slot 1. If I reverse the cables in the sense: BACKPLANE-A to H200 PORT B and BACKPLANE-B to H200 PORT A, then the numbering is fine, but unfortunately I have an error on the SAS server CABLE A FAIL somthing ... But that's how it all works and the operating system detects the drives correctly. Is it caused by wrongly selected cables? Have you encountered something like this? Regards Gregory

What you are describing is expected behavior. There's what's going on: 1) Dell uses some signal between HBA and backplane, probably over the sideband wires to detect cable presence. If you connect A to B, it disrupts that signal and you get the warning about SAS cable A. 2) LSI at some point, decided to reverse the port enumeration order on HBA controllers. I think sometime around version P10? So, LSI RAID controllers and LSI HBA controllers enumerate in reverse when you have the latest firmware. Since These older Dell servers never had a HBA option and was mostly meant to be configured with RAID controllers (like PERC6/I or H700), the numbering on the chassis matches that pattern. If you use a HBA with LSI firmware, it's going to seem backwards. There's nothing wrong with your system necessarily. Hope that helps!

Will those cables fit R720 (12x3.5 LFF) + H200?
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 3 года назад
No idea. For R720, I would recommend a mini monolithic card instead of H200.

Sir, I am building a new PC. I've already had a SAS hard drive. My question is, is it really worth it to buy a converter to convert from SAS connector to SATA connector or just buy a new SATA drive?
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 4 года назад
there's no converter to change a SAS HDDs to SATA HDDs; doesn't exist as far as i know. there are 'interposers' that you can install on SATA HDDs, that allow it to work better with SAS controllers, like dual channel setups, but not the other way around.

Hi, would it be possible to ship cables to the Serbia? I'm stuck with R710 and H200 without proper cable.
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 4 года назад
I only ship outside the USA using eBay Global Shipping. Unfortunately, Serbia does not look like a country that is on their list: pages.ebay.com/seller-center/shipping/global-shipping-program.html

BTW, another option that I've seen some buyers use, is a package/mail forwarding service. So you can use USA address to order your item, and the service will forward it from that address to your address in Serbia. I don't have a specific service to recommend, but I know I've had a few buyers that used that type of service to buy from my eBay store. Hope that maybe that will help...

One question. Can you install latest Nvidia GTX/RTX cards on this thing. Thank you.
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 4 года назад
in the R710? some cards... the ones that don't need external power probably work fine for the most part. the ones that require external power, you'll have to figure out how to route power to it. many people have installed GPUs in the R710, and some times more than 1.

Hey man, I am not sure if you still have a R710 but could you do me a favor? could you give me the pinout for the backplane on this thing? Or at the very least a part number for that backplane power cable.

Why did you need to change the original cables?
@ArtofServer
@ArtofServer 4 года назад
The SAS cables with the original PERC 6/I had SFF8484 connectors which will not fit on the H200. The H200 needs SFF8087 connectors.
