Hullo Becca, I am enjoying your series on easily influenced! I do take many longer videos in chunks. I just got your opinion on comic artists at the 44 or so minute mark. Now you have spoken about the underrepresented aspect of comic artists. I honestly believe that so many artists were forced into the digital workflow and abandoned traditional methods. I know as I was told that I would never be hired as a comic inker, colorist, or even backgrounds if I continued to work with traditional mediums. I am excited that there are so many opportunities for all artists these days I have seen a greater acceptance of scanned images, but it still “needs” cleanup before you can submit your art for publication. Thank you for sharing this extensive review of these MaimeriBlu collaborations! You are truly amazing with your exhaustive investigation. You keep going just as you are!

I had to cite my sources and use parenthetical citation all through High School and College...and I just went to Public School and Community College. Influencer artists have to know that citing sources is a thing. Most High School English teachers will have you learn this skill at some point. And you definitely won't get through college without crediting others' work. Seems that most influencers prioritize social media over all else and taking the time to list one's sources and give proper credit isn't seen as important... maybe because it doesn't directly make money or provide them attention. There are probably a lot of influencers that cite their sources and give proper credit but the majority of what I see online doesn't do this.

THIS! You hit the nail on the head! I have to admit, it can be difficult to know WHERE to cite these sources- on the video itself? in the description? And if you're using a diff social media site, do you do it in the thread? Do you send a reply comment? BUT! Even if you make a mistake and do it slightly wrong, doing it at ALL is a much better faith effort than just pretending that you made it all up yourself! People forget sometimes all the things they've read and the places they've read it, and that's fine, but a good faith attempt goes a long way IMO.

I really value your videos as a consumer. I love Kristy Rice but I wasn't mad at your review of her paint. I didn't buy the paints bc I didn't like the colors and they seemed over priced bc they looked like prima marketing paints, which were already priced a lot less. I can love an influencer without loving their products. If you're getting beat up for these, that sucks. I think you've been very clear that your reviews are not personal.

Thanks for this! This J.Dickson set makes more sense. Maimeri Blu has a starter set available in 🇩🇪 for 30€ which is asuper deal! It makes more sense in terms of mixing: 084 Cad Yellow Deep, 180 Quinacridobe Lake (great pink!), 333 Green Gold. 392 ultramarine Deep. 514 Payne's Grey) I also like Maimeri's Magenta Primary Red (256, PV19) which is a fabulous pink and mixes great coral colours. I am surprised neither of the two sets by the influencers included one of these pink / magenta colours. What I like about Maimeri Blu is that they are all single pigment colours, all 90 colours in their collection. There is no other brand that does this. I like mixing and this ensures that I control my mixes very well. I look forward to the field test next.

Becca, not sure if you are aware but just letting you know in case you weren't and there is some glitch in your Channel settings - for some reason I was able to view your video yesterday before it premiered! I had your Easily Influenced playlist on and it just started playing. Then later on I received a notification that the video was premiering and I though I was going crazy...

I would love a summarizing video of tips that were overlooked in the books. I am a beginning self taught watercolorist and I happened to already own most of the books you have reviewed so far and I would love to know what I am missing lol. Thank you

When I was starting watercolor and looking for watercolor books Jenna Rainey's ( I definitely dont think I spelled that correctly) book/s were suggested so much and I watched some flip through, I wasn't impressed and didn't understand the hype. but everyone falls into the hype, why though? Lol. I continued my search and found Hello watercolor and purchased that book. I was very happy with the book. I wasn't super happy about the calligraphy only because I was looking for watercolor only but I knew it was included because I read the description and reviews. The calligraphy section was awesome and super inspiring though. I did learn a lot from her book and I still continue to use it because I'm still very much a beginner even a few years later. I personally just love playing and am terrible at drawing and usually to paint you need something to paint,right? Lol. Also I really dislike drawing/learning to draw so yeah that's my drawback with painting ha. I appreciate your honest reviews and I know I can rely on your reviews/opinions. A lot of youtubers besides a few seem to have the same "opinions" on materials or info but when you hear reviews from other consumers, their opinions are very different ( which I know everyone has their own opinion and that's a good thing) but it's just shady that the 2 different types of "consumers" have drastically different opinions/ ideas. Just a thought. Thanks again. Have a great idea. Btw can't wait for the maccochinno book review.

I’m new to your channel. I enjoyed the longer review. I wanted to suggest maybe adding a glazing portion to your painting section. For an hour and 20 minute video- the painting analysis seemed short. I look forward to other reviews from you.

An excellent idea- great minds think alike! I used to do a glazing portion during color mixing, but I found that in general the results from that test weren't really indicative of how they'd handle in an illustration that uses glazing, so at this point, I just field test watercolors that seem promising.

I consider myself self-taught (no art classes or degrees at all) and I learned to draw by drawing all the time as a teen. BUT when it comes to using watercolors, I'm totally a product of the youtube school of art. 😂 Seriously though, do I call myself a youtube taught watercolor painter?
@joymiller9668

I kinda think what she meant is she specifically learned watercolor at home. Just being the devil's advocate, if she had said self taught artist without specifying watercolor id agree. Now is it slightly misleading maybe but I think hers was more specified than others.

Yeah, "self-taught" is an industry expression for "did not study specific X skill at university". Though I think Becca understands that and what I think she's arguing for is for this phrase to be dropped in favour of more helpful ones - I really liked "self-motivated artist"! I think some of us feel awkward/vulnerable as artists going into fields we were not specifically trained for, so I understand wanting to explain - I don't think it is necessarily a desire to obfuscate. E.g. my academic background is in sound art and I studied it at a time when it wasn't as well know as it is now (which is not a lot either, haha!). I had no training at university in visual arts whatsoever, but after university I gradually moved form sound art into multidisciplinary stuff (including visual work) and I always feel a bit apologetic about my lack of more advanced skill in drawing, colour theory etc despite my age and having two art degrees, compared to someone who studied visual arts specifically. Though I personally have never called myself "self-taught". Parenthetically I think I relate a lot to Becca feeling a bit like an outsider within the art field, as a lot of people just don't understand where I am coming from and just want to pigeonhole me as this or that, or at times won't even think of me as an artist at all! I also make a lot of work that could fall under contemporary art, as well as stuff that might be considered craft or music (in fact while I make it I like to think of all my art, even visual work, as "music", because music is much freer than contemporary art is in many ways) and regularly perform as a musician, as I don't really like to pretend that I am only about one thing just so I can "market" myself better. As a result, I am not very successful, haha, but dangit, I AM an artist!

I think this whole battle against terminology that has been around for literally decades ("self taught") is somewhat of a waste of energy, to be honest. I understand where Becca is coming from 100% because it can be confuing, but only to those VERY new to the art world, and it's a term that someone interested in the arts will pick up literally immediately when they expose themselves to art and artists. It's a term that is understand both in industry and household to mean not professionally trained in a formal setting. It's not just in art- the culinary world use it as well, as do craftspeople and the services industry.
