What's funny is I remember Hilda being a cozy show! Maybe I remember the warm, fuzzy feelings it left me rather than the actual content. Something about this show is so comforting, but I can't describe it.

I cannot describe the feeling I had of watching the first two episodes of Hilda at the point in my life where I was gearing up to move away from home for the first time. Watching Hilda and her mom lose their home but knowing they'd be alright? Tears every single time. This show is so unbelievably special to me, and in that way I guess I can understand why people would call it "cozy"

I think...people got into the habit of calling it cozy...because the art style seems very cozy. Even though the plot & themes get dark or heavy, the art is still base-line this rough, but oh so soft looking stuff, with the pencil-like dithering in the line-art & the roundness in the main casts' designs. The style enhances the cozy moments, lending them staying power in the mind, I think. Also the fact that, from what I remember, a lot of the episodes end in a cozy moment. Especially in the early season[s]. But it's been a bit since I watched. XD Being left with a final, cozy, scene, would influence how one remembers even a harsher episode I think.... I should rewatch the show. Cozy or not, it's still a very good show. X3 Thank-you for the content! I enjoyed the video a lot! 0w0

23:35 I think it's important to point out that the bells don't just make the Trolls angry or irritated they cause them so much distress and pain that it brings the one in the first episode to tears. This shoe does a lot of great allergories and metaphors and i feel like the trolls are a great allergory for being autistic. They are sensitive to specific sounds (like the sound of bells) and they are disliked because they are different than humans plus they even have the changeling thing in the film where Hilda is replaced with a troll baby. It seems to be a common idea in the autistic community that theres a connection between autistic children and the folklore of changelings. Perhaps when people used to think their babies were replaced by changelings in the past it was really just their baby being autistic and their traits starting to show.

I would just like to say that the monster design of the fairy isle god demon thing with the cloak is genuinely one of my favorite creatures on television. Just... the suffocating feeling of being in the presence of something so far beyond human comprehension, that scene with it during the grandparents' flashback genuinely felt like being in the presence of a god. Not a caring god, an apathetic god. The scream it releases at its prey feels like just a peek at its true power and influence. It felt so real in a way that absolutely terrified me. Phenominal stuff.

I think there was some really good foreshadowing that the hooded figures were family. We first see the aunt in a hood when she's checking the charms around the fairy mound, which sets up a visual indication she might somehow be connected to the hooded figures. When Hilda thinks she sees her dad, it's a person wearing a hood. And when the mom is saving Hilda during the camping episode, she looks like a hooded figure from behind the webbing.

algo boost i really loved this. your being able to talk about what more you'd wanted from the show, while not expressly criticizing it, was a really honest and kind way to go about your review. being able to express your problems with what you saw, while still making it clear that those things weren't what the show was about your ability to accurately re-create an episode-by-episode feeling of analysis, like we were watching it with you even while having a script and being able to dissect your thoughts under a more neutral setting was fantastic. your emotion towards the important plot beats still so clearly came through, even while you keep it towards analyzing rather than, like... liveblogging? i hope that made sense you gave me a new appreciation for a lot of the beats in the show, while still being able to make me laugh and entertain me without just recapping. you added something to the experience of the show, and in doing so, made me feel like i was watching it again for the first time. for that, i earnestly thank you you've been a favorite creator of mine for a while, but i havent commented on your videos as much as i shouldve. your videos are emotionally honest and genuinely compelling, and always show me an angle to the properties ive enjoyed that i hadnt considered before. you're entertaining but thought-provoking, and you bring a sincerity to my experience on youtube that i find very, very rarely. thank you so much for making these videos. you're an artist

i just finsihed season three and hopped onto the hilda tumblr to see what people thought and found your video! i absolutely adore this show and the themes that it doesn't shy away from - in a lot of ways I see it as a step up sister show to bluey, where the characters get thought some really quite deep and meaningful life lessons through super digestible and enjoyable episodes that often times your don't quite notice the themes you're being taught. i also found that I agreed with loads of your points. I adored season three and didn't even realise it was coming out until it was releaced, i decided to go back and rewatch everything befiore i watched season three (as i hadnt watched it since i first binged the show during lockdown in 2020) and boy am i glad that i did. the story beats, themes and character developemnt that we see are some of the best and most well written ive seen in 'childrens' television in a long time. season three was amazing but i found that i agree with you with the suggestion that season three should have been a movie and the movie should have become the season 3 but only with the material we had been given, the toften storyline should have been put all together into a film and the other season three epsiodes and the mountain king should have been made into the first half. allowing for the other epsisodes more time to fully develop before they need to go away from trollberg for a while , which then sets up the movie a bit better. if only we had the extra six episodes!!! also i found that, although the dad was the catalyst for the second half of the toften storyline, was he really a necessary character to add to an already pretty large ensemble ?- i think to fix the lack of alfer and tontu in season three, they should have maybe been taken instead (maybe with an extra character like frida)? because the only reason he got taken there was becuase the grandparents saw that he was in danger and wanted to help, which they could have easily been rewritten to be in danger from some sort of creature during an adventure. this would also help give frida more screen time and a chance to rewrite spells and try fairy magic in a way to further her character development too. great reveiw dude ive subscribed :)

im glad you enjoyed the video! i have a few bluey episodes here too, and i agree they both have an amazing way of getting disarmingly heavy topics through in a digestable way. definitely agree that hildas dad wasn't the strongest choice but i still think that the answer to the problem is in the episodes we didnt get and that's still bothering me. Maybe one day we'll get The Hilda Cut haha

Just to explain Frida and David’s place in the movie- the original graphic novel for the Mountain King didn’t include them. They were part of the story and world but the book only focused on Hilda and Johannas story. So that kinda explains why David and Fridas part in the movie feels a little tacked on and not explored to it’s fullest.

one of my favorite things about season 3 is david and frida’s outfit changes. i love how frida’s outfit now has kaiza’s color scheme, as well as her hair being down symbolizing how she’s become less rigid since the beginning of the series, and david now having a blue shirt could possibly show how he’s taken on some of hilda’s traits like bravery :D i also adore the sweater that hilda wears sometimes that’s a mini version of her moms, its such i good detail i love it so much (also im pretty sure that the reason why frida’s arc seems a bit underdeveloped is because in the original graphic novel series she’s only a side character but i could be wrong)

Overly Sarcastic Productions has done vids on Celtic folklore and fairytales that have similar vibes to Hilda’s folkloric inspirations. In the vid about Pwyll, Prince of Dyved, Red talks about how the fae king Arawn rules part of Annwyn, and Arawn is kind of a king of the afterlife as well. A lot of Celtic myth conflates the afterlife and ghosts with the magical realm of the fae, like how the Morrigan isn’t just a Scottish war goddess but the Phantom Queen, she’s got associations with ghosts and stuff.

This isn't my first comment to a Hilda video but, Hilda is the most wonderful and flawless show to have ever existed on television. I had so many thoughts about this cartoon and after watching the 3rd season, I couldn't stop thinking about reviving this show for another. It has truly amazing episodes and stories as the lovable blue haired girl goes throughout her adventures of the world. I also love all the characters such as Johanna, Twig, Raven, and others where they help Hilda through her struggles to uncover mysteries. Like I said before, I'd really want Hilda to continue on her adventures a with another season but unfortunately this show comes to a close. Still revivals are possible but only if the creators will allow it.

To me it feels cozy just because of the art style and a lot of the music in it. The characters look soft, and the colors are not super saturated. Any of the landscapes in the show would easily be on the background on a lofi, or lofi fantasy fantasy playlist. I grew up watching courage the cowardly dog, and billy and mandy, so I guess the darker aspects of the show didn't really strike me too hard.

Ok 1, I had no idea that 6 eps were missing from the 3rd season but it makes a lot of sense, it definitely felt rushed and I hope the studio will be allowed to release them for the public someday. And 2, was anyone else disappointed by the fairies? At first I thought the mushroom squid creatures were the fairies and i was SO hyped up bc i have never seen fairies depicted that way before, only to be disillusioned when they say those things are basically security. And then we finally see a fairy AND.......it just a person with pointy ears and can fly 😑 the elder fairy was so cool but the fact they really built up the fairies through the whole season, the fact the elder fairy is the last of its kind and not an entire realm of weird looking, powerful creatures was just a huge let down.

like i said in the video, the big beats are so good I can forgive the finer points, but I also don't want to pretend those thoughts dont exist. I trust the talent displayed throughout the show to believe the full season would've fixed a lot of that. I do wish when they got to Tofoten they just stayed there, and MY GOD I still think the fairy island stuff was about death (mushroom fairies are the limbo fairies) we just didn't get the time to explore it all. Maybe one day we'll get the Silent Hill story I sensed in Hilda lol

Poor Bellringer guy even got his blue streak removed once Hilda's actual dad came on screen. It honestly feels like they dropped him because of the implications if he had been Hilda's dad. Her not recognizing him at all implies he NEVER visited her or knew she even existed. He was clearly surprised to see Johanna when she came to get Hilda, so THERE had to be something the writers intended to happen at one point. Because of this, the introduction of Hilda's dad in this season feels like a retcon and a plot device for Johanna to get stuck in the fairy mound, even though without his involvement, Johanna could've been kidnapped by her parents to save her instead (and her parents would've kept avoiding her there, thinking Hilda might be able to save her.) What else can I say but feel like his existence is underutilized in this season, and maybe that is because of the episode cuts. Then, besides the whole dad thing, there is Tofoten and the fairy mound. I absolutely LOVE what they introduce, where the depopulating town capitalizes in the only thing it has going for it, which also happens to be part of the reason why there are so little people left there. At least, it is implied so... Since they spend so little time exploring the world of the fairy mound, you don't really get that "ah ha!" moment. The fairy mound is clearly some, symbiotic parasite, that provides safety to its inhabitants while also feasting on them, and the fairies capitalized on it and drove every other creature away to conquer it, since there are creatures outside that have evolved to eat fairies, although most have probably starved to extinction by now. But what I don't really get is the finer details of the the past and the current situation of the fairies. For example, is that one tree in that one episode a place fairies made eons ago, because it has humanoid hands and drawing all over it? Did fairies use the tree to escape fairy eating monsters or the kidnappings of the fairy mound? Did all fairies decide to live in the fairy mound or were most of them kidnapped to sustain the symbiotic parasite? Is a direct off-spring of a fairy cursed by the fairy mound, so it can make a deal with the off-spring or its parents to take them away for sustenance, or is it something that happens only to human-fairy off-spring by default? Did the town of Tofoten have tons of fairy-human pairs and children taken by the fairy mound, which is why some people are more paranoid than others? Like the old man maybe had his parents taken away, and that was supposed to also have a resolution of some kind. There are human-eared people in the fairy mound, so that is certainly the case isn't it? Is the fairy mound a place that supports complacency, which causes the fairies to not populate it and also leads the mound to its self-fulfilling suffering, which is why the device to take fairies exists? I love Hilda and can live with some of the unanswered questions, but I feel like some stuff should have been adressed since there clearly are some cut conclusions to the dying Town of Tofoten, and the whole dad thing feels so underutilized, again most likely due to the season being cut in half. I love the messages and themes of familial and friendship bonds, and the 3rd season is still good, but just... Underutilized at some parts.

I didn't really bring up how good this video reviewing Hilda is, since I kinda wanted to stay on track with my thoughts (It is really hard for me to format different parts together). First off, I strongly agree that it is really unfortunate the season got cut off, and also feel like we didn't get to see much of the fairy mound, which is why I feel like there are so many unanswered questions. And while I feel like the whole real dad thing should've just been cut, the review brings up a good point that it would have been better, if he had to take on the responsible father role due to Johanna going missing instead, to utilize his existence. And besides season 3 talk, the review got me thinking about how in the sidelines Frieda is in the terms of character development. She gets over her problems pretty quick compared to David, and even gains magic skills that she doesn't really get to use that often. I think what explains this, is that David and Frieda did not have that big of a role in the comics, and David happened to be easier to write episodes for. In fact, Hilda is based on comics Made by Luke Pearlson and only made books up to the Mountain King, which the series adapted. And there are some differences between the two. For starters, the Bellringer doesn't exist, Alfor never comes with Hilda to Trolberg, Hilda and Frieda aren't relevant to the Mountain King plot at all, and Ahlberg is actually just a misguided well-meaning fool instead of ignorant and fame-seeking. So most of season 3 is basically new material that might've not been canon in the 2 first seasons.

It is so fascinating to learn that episodes were cut from season 3. In retrospect it makes sense but when I watched season 3 I was so satisfied with it and got so much closure that as much as I would love for there to be more I am pretty happy with what we got. I think Hilda like gravity falls perfectly encapsulates what E for everyone looks like when done well.

Just finished watching the show! My favorite over-arching concept was that of the heroism of adults behaving like adults. For all the adults in the show, it's a constant effort to listen, remain calm, acknowledge reality, and make concessions, and it's clearly their responsibility to do so. When Hilda or her friends fail to do any of that, it's justified because they're children, and it's extraordinary when they succeed. On the other hand, it's just comforting when the adults succeed at those things.

Hilda is a fantastic cozy show, not in terms of always being cozy but in the sense that you always feel that at the end of everything it's all going to end up well. As for a show that you might enjoy and would be cool to see you cover: "Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir"

This series felt so very Norwegian that is confused me each time I looked at the info pages and it was an English series/movie. Seriously, everything about it from the accents, to the stories that just slammed me back to listening to tales from my grandparents when we went to visit in Norway.

not sure if you still do trying to stan videos for music artists but im BEGGING for you to listen to the music of La Dispute, they’re pretty underrated but they are SO GOOD and actual lyrical geniuses. id recommend King Park, The Last Lost Continent, New Storms For Older Lovers (my personal favorite ), I see everything, and Andria. Hope you see this bc i absolutely love your reactions to everything💞💞

So based on this, i guess Bill doesn't think over the garden wall is a cozy show? But i what i find cozy about Hilda is no matter how bad things get, i always felt that Hilda would have a safe space to turn with her mom and friends.

No, OTGW is not a cozy show. I would not suggest someone watch it if they want something cozy to escape from reality and decompress lol I would 100% suggest it if that person wanted something creepy and scary without being overwhelmed. Like I said in the video many times, that doesn't impact the quality of the show. I hope the rest of the video helps my point if you check it out.

@@thethirdbill sorry Over the Garden Wall was a joke. I know it's not something to recommend (though I find horror helps me decompress but that's just a certain type of person). This is actually why when people ask for a recommendation I like to find out their interests and limits. I still find Hilda is cozy for myself. I didn't have the best childhood and lost my dad young so I personally find Johanna and Hilda's relationship to be comforting. I wasn't trying to criticize your take but only explain my own point of view.

YESSSS!!! I've been waiting for this for the LONGEST time! I'm so glad you watched it :') While this show does...get dark and deal with a lot...I'd still say it's cozy. Cozy-ish. I think that comes from just...the way it's animated and colored maybe? It's just...SO pleasing to the eye. And I just really fucking love it haha. Another show that I'd really love for you to watch is Good Omens. It has 2 seasons out currently, and the third (and final) season is going to start filming...sometime...soon haha. But it would at least be a show that you could start knowing that...we're getting an ending! It's a fantastic show, and I won't lie...it's not cozy lol. It definitely will...kinda fuck you up, but I swear it's so worth. It's fun and silly and...it's great. Angels and demons and the antichrist and armageddon and...trying to stop the world from ending. I think you'd really get into it. The two main characters are an angel and demon and their relationship throughout history starting all the way back in the Garden of Eden. I don't wanna give too much away, but it's fucking great. Based on a book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, but not necessary to read before watching the show. But y'know...if you're into reading...it's DEFINITELY a good one. I'd just...really love if you checked it out. I'd love to hear your thoughts/opinions

Silent Hil..da is definitely a pro-move. Didn’t even recognize the similarities until big brain Bill walked in. 😂 Jokes aside, happy you wanted and enjoyed this beautiful show for all that it is. The graphic novels/comics do answer a lot of your questions but I won’t get into it in case you decide to pick them up on your own. As a big fan of the novels, I loved seeing the characters play out on screen and subtle changes and updates that were made. I was sad to see season 3 shortened but happy with what we got and that we got to see the mother daughter bond as I feel that with my own mother. Having been through a lot of stuff together, including divorce and a terrible biological dad relationship. This show hits home strongly for me and holds a special place in my animation and story loving heart.

Here's my two cents for anyone interested. The thing about Hilda is that it has a beautiful artstyle and colour palette, like eternal autumn! But the real cozy factor for me was that I grew up with these mytholigical stories being told when surrounded by the woods. The fae circles and rules, stone giants, nisse etc. I grew up with these woods being essentially filled with magic! Of course they had their scary versions told, but they were more like your average warnings for kids to stay safe when in the woods, and respectful of nature. Besides! Hilda has plenty of down-time scenes that are so charming you can't help but to associate it with cups of tea, warm blankets and small picturesque towns. The bordering on horror elements are those myths taken to their most interesting extreme, or drawing on very creative writing that is just inspired by these myths to make an amazing story! So yeah...cozy. With horror.
