I loved that Jason Funderburker reveal. Wurt's built him up to be this cool casanova rival coming to steal his girl the whole series, and then it turns out he's this lame little weiner kid. The best part is, his appearance is based on Pat McHale (the series creator) when he was an overdressed teenager.
Fun fact: The voice actor of The Beast, Samuel Ramey, is an actual, professional operatic actor/singer, who is known for playing Demons and "Devil"-like characters in Opera tales. So basically, they couldn't have made a better and more fitting casting choice for a being as demonic and devil-like as The Beast.
@@thethirdbill And the Queen of the Clouds is voice by Deborah Voigt, another professional opera singer with an angelic soprano, so for whatever it's worth, it seems those two characters are supposed to be opposites and equals.
Just like in Harry Potter, when Dumbledore said, "Of course this is happening inside your head. But why should that make it any less real?" They just love to mind fuck everyone, I love it😂
theres this depressing theory that the whole thing was made up by the frog that was singing in the beginning to the end of the series, it makes a lot of sense but i hate it :(
So according to the creators, they were technically in the in-between (in between life and death), and Wirt was originally meant to sacrifice his life to get Greg home. Thankfully, they decided to keep him alive for the end
@@terryhopkins9324 I think along what the creators have said about the ending, that it's less of a cynical representation of death but more about Wirt realizing he's let himself get in the way of doing what he's always wanted to before death: revealing his feelings to Sara. As the series progresses he's more willing to stay in this "purgatory", or give up on trying to go home, than find the courage within himself to brave the path *despite* it being "the unknown", not realizing that this very fear of the unknown was what had stopped him from getting to know Sara like he wanted. It's only until he realizes how poorly he's treated Greg after losing him that he finds the will to go on, a kid who only managed to survive this long because of his ceaseless hope for the future (symbolized by the one simple purpose he constantly sticks to, naming his frog), the very mentality Wirt constantly tried to push away in both himself and his brother. Once Wirt finds a reason to go on, and rescues Greg, he finds his own courage to confront the metaphorical and literal Beast - a being who survives off of lost souls, and admits his feelings to Sara.
when they were in the graveyard drinking age appropriate beverages, you can see one of the gravestones was labeled Quincy Endicott, which furthers the purgatory/limbo theory
If you’re interested in your own free time, the “For Sara” tape can be listened to on RU-vid. It’s.... a very curious little tape and is as embarrassing as Wirt makes it out to be
That's a depressing but plausible take for many reasons, not the least of which is because in "Inferno", the souls of those who committed suicide are turned into trees
Well the original source is the "Divina Commedia" wrote by Dante Alighieri around 1200. In the insicurity of is mid-age he travel hell, purgatory and paradise up to God.
@@iwillruletheworldyay i think they were referencing like, amazon alexa, this kinda thing. i do agree that human=/=person but not everything that talks is a person, technically!
@@YakitoriQueen No, I was referencing something that is able to talk to you. A machine isn't speaking, it's producing sound, that's not the same thing. Maybe it would be more clear if I said "If you're conversing with something, it's a person."
Over the Garden Wall and Adventure Time are imo, the 2 best cartoons of the decade with some of the best music and atmosphere of any cartoons I've ever seen, so happy you watched OTGW
adventure time really lost me through season 5 and 6, i still need to go back and finish it. I loved the first few seasons and then it started to feel like it was just consistently losing quality. ive seen a few season 7 episodes and they seemed to get better again, but not enough to draw me back in like it originally did.
Firstly, I'd honestly consider seasons 7 and 8 to actually be the best AT seasons, along with Season 3. And Imma throw out the hard disagree on this opinion. I think it is really over exaggerated as to how bad season 6 in particular is. Very, very similarly to season 4, season 6 is weighed down by a handful of somewhat average episodes among the rest of the good to fantastic ones. many of the absolute best this show has to offer are in this season. Episodes like: Wake Up, Escape from the Citadel, Food Chain, Something Big, Little Brother, Is That You?, Jake the Brick, The Cooler, Evergreen, Astral Plane, The Visitor, Jermaine, Graybles 1000+, Hoots, You Forgot Your Floaties, Orgalorg, and The Comet are all from this season and are easily some of the series’ strongest. I’d say season 6 is eligible to be considered the best season of the entire show. While I personally wouldn’t consider it the absolute best one I doubt I’d really argue with anyone who at least considers it the best of the first six. This season tackles so many topics and themes and is easily the most thematically packed of all the previous seasons. Specifically episodes like Nemesis, The Cooler, The Mountain, Astral Plane, You Forgot Your Floaties, and The Comet. Some themes within the show’s own universe, some that can apply to real life, but whatever the themes were, they were always interesting and well explored. The strongest examples of real world applicable themes and topics were presented in the episodes, Nemesis, The Cooler, and the Mountain. Yes, seasons 5 and 6 are a shift in tone from the first 3 seasons and most of season 4, but they aren't bad and they fit extremely well into the show as a whole when looking at everything together. Sure they have weak episodes but the good far outweighs the bad.
Adventure Time was great for bringing about Cartoon Networks renaissance of new animation, but it’s lack of any real plot or motive really dragged it later on
@@14s0cc3r14 The thing about AT is that it isn't really plot centric show, or at least that's not the main draw, it's an episodic show with overarching story elements, it's basically Steven Universe but the filler isn't filler and the story arcs are sparse and ultimately aren't the main reason people watch the show.
Also, another interesting blink and you'll miss it moment is Quincy Endicott (the mansion guy from episode 5) was one of the names on the graves when the kids went to the cemetery. This kind of hints into the fact that Greg and Wirt were in some sort of weird limbo type of land the whole time....but I could also be wrong so
Fun fact! You can hear the train whistle (from them falling off the bridge) at the end of each episode opening, and it gets louder as the series progresses.
I kinda want to see him react to "Infinity Train" now, because I think he'll be in tears and be able to take away so much from it. Lord knows both of those applied to me when I watched it!
I've watched this show over and over and something I only just noticed is every time you see the moon in The Unknown, it never changes phases. Even though days "seem" to be passing. Its the same half moon you see on that Halloween night
Covering the question of what “The Beast” was revealed as briefly at the end- “The Beast” is possibly a wendigo since they are known for eating souls, and ‘his’ silhouette resembles a wendigo’s- Beatrice is also a possible ‘spirit guide’ in the unknown or ‘limbo/purgatory’
@T R Well the thing about Wendigos is that they really didn’t have horns or antlers that was adapted by Europeans to make it more scary. Real Wendigos were more like very tall pale humans, which basically is a jab at Europeans. Wendigos were know for cannibalism, greed, and self loathing, that last part could fit into the idea that The Beast represents depression and submission, they were extremely fast and had ice hearts, once again a reference to The Beasts callus and cold nature. The Wendigo had the ability to also mimic voices of family members so that they could lead people off the forest paths, once again the beasts while not directly mimicking people’s voices he definitely manipulates people so that he gets what he wants. The final thing is that Wendigos had ice hearts and in some stories could never die as their heart would regenerate a new body around it. The only was to fully kill a Wendigo is to burn the ice heart, just like how to kill The Beast you needed to blow out his lantern. This is just some similarities that The Beast had to Wendigos but it’s clear the beast also takes inspiration from many different creatures and characters like pan the Greek god of the wild.
Next you should listen to the music/ most popular songs in Phineas and Ferb. A show that was very popular for Millenials and Generation Z's, and is so annoyingly not talked about. I have been listening to some of my favourite songs from the show!
I seem to recall you hit on it in the music overview. Their guide through this purgatory, her name is *Beatrice.* ... Yeah. The Divine Comedy, in 120 minutes.
When you listened to the soundtrack, you dissected the song where Greg leaves for the dream world as falling for the trap of a demon. I think that the beast created Greg’s dream to lure him away from Wirt. He is an Oneiroi, a dream demon. I’m so glad you watched this, it’s one of my favorites! I’d also recommend Infinity Train!
Two other cartoons you need to watch are “Adventure Time” and “Infinity Train”. Adventure Time is a pretty long show though (but I feel worth it). Infinity Train only has its first season out so far, but I think you’d really enjoy it.
OTGW is an allusion to Dante's Inferno. Beatrice (dante's girl), the ferry (ferry of Charon), 2 gold coins (needs 2 coins to board the ferry). the dog in the tavern guarding the door (cerberus), Wirt and Dante (both are poets), greg (acts as virgil who sings songs).
Over the garden wall is my roomies favorite show. It's really good. I was shocked at how dark it was. When Wart hit his head near the end, and you could hear the ringing in his ears... Wow.
The Beast has people-trees in it body bc he was feed by the death of children's (that was trasnformed into trees) One thing got stuck in my mind... The last song say "If dreams can't come true, then why not pretend?" and "The loveliest LIES of all?" So...If they survive was like...a lie?
I loved the scene in "ringing of the bell" where Wirt and Greg are in Lorna and Auntie Whispers house and Greg has the frog in his pants and is dancing around and Wirt tells him to get that frog outta his pants and Greg says" He can do what he wants!"lol
Would have liked if you reacted to episode 3 Schooltown Follies, as Wirt deliberately pisses off Beatrice by acting obedient to the school rules just because thats how shes been mocking him 😄
The frog lit up at the end because it swallowed the bell. It’s a way to show that everything Did happen and it wasn’t some dream. (Because when they leave the unknown, they end up next to the train In the water again)
I've never known how to explain it to anyone, but the song with Greg dancing in cloud land with toys and animals gives me some of the creepiest feelings in the show. It reminds me of Ukrainian cartoons I was shown as a child. Drawn, cute, faded color and sketchy animations in a language that I could not understand, that had to be hidden from the Soviet government because of the distribution and occasional anticommunist messages and themes. My most terrifying nightmares are in that animation. It seems no one really gets it, because it's not the same as just a creepy doll or a glitchy cartoon with demonic faces, what I'm thinking of is totally innocent. Something about that scene perfectly pinpoints my greatest nightmares, and I'll never know why.
This is the second comment of mine that you've liked today and can I just say that I really appreciate that? I always feel really special when creators take notice of my comments/feedback, it makes me feel listened to! So thank you a bunch! (^ω^)
Over The Garden Wall is my favourite TV Series ever!! I moved to a small town this summer and transferred schools, but I've already made so many friends! Today, one of the girls in our friend group invited us to her house to watch OTGW when we're off school for Christmas! Great timing! I am so so happy you liked it. I think you would love the 'The art of Over The Garden Wall' book too!
Man, I'm so glad you liked the show. So much goodness in such a small amount of time, it really is one of this decade's best animated series imo. By the way, if you haven't watched any Ghibli movies yet (or there are some you haven't seen yet), I'd love to see your reaction and hear your thoughts on movies like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle etc etc
Loved seeing it dawn on you that the soundtrack wasn't what you expected after watching the show. It is expected that you'd think they'd all make sense right next to each other, but a part, it's far tougher to not see the random in it.
They were hinting that time was almost not passing through the whole show! If you watch with the subtitles on, it says there’s a train whistle in the distance in every episode after the introductions! I loved this whole show so much! Glad you watched it :D
this show has a LOT of references to death in it. Potsfield (the town with the skeletons), for example, is the name of an unmarked grave. The tombstones in the graveyard have names of characters we met in the woods, the whole bit about needing two coins to pay the ferryman, etc. I'd recommend looking some of it up, it's pretty interesting!
About the tree growing around him: I interpreted as becoming part of the tree. That idea holds a kind of dread in it because of all the faces on the trees. And needing to burn that wood to stay alive. So it's a possibility that all the trees are people who got lost in the woods.
Saying this is my favourite show is a massive understatement. I was getting really excited while reacting to someone watching it, because none of my friends will watch it with me😔
I’m so glad you gave the show a watch! OTGW is one of the best recent cartoons imo! I Fun Fact: in Episode 12, in the background you can hear a slowed down version of Potatoes and Molasses, which also is in Latin. It’s very creepy. I enjoyed this video and I hope to see more of you and cartoons. May I suggest Milo Murphy’s Law. It’s from the creators of Phineas and Ferb so of course the music will be great.
@@thethirdbill Yeah! I literally stayed up until midnight (without noticing it) and watched the entire thing. I was an emotional mess by the end, so I feel you on that! Also it definitely was like watching the show with a friend! That's why I love your videos so much! You're amazing, my man!
Ughhh, I’ve been waiting for this! Thank you so much for reacting 🙏🏻I’m happy you loved the show. As usual, you nailed a lot of your predictions and interpretations. I would recommend watching it a second time after knowing the ending, because you pick up on a lot of cool undertones and things you miss the first time around. When they fell in the river, they were on the brink of death. The woods are meant to be sort of the stage inbetween life and death; where in all of their actions affect the final result of where they end up. You’ll notice that the weather gets increasingly colder throughout the series. Most people attribute this to being a representation of the hypothermia they are suffering from in the water. The longer they take to find their way out of this “purgatory”, the closer they get to death. Wirt is a naturally very witty and clever kid, even though he’s awkward and self doubting- and his caution and instinct help him navigate through the tricks that many before them fell to. Greg is a good natured and wholesome child, and his actions prove they are good people and deserving of a second chance. Beatrice I think is meant to be sort of a spirit guide throughout their journey. Anyway it’s a great show, and I hope you decide to do more reactions like this!
There are comics of wirt and Greg's adventures in the unknown that are left out of the show. Also have you seen star vs the forces of evil? That's a good one too
Have you ever watched Ghibli movies, like Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle? I think you'd really love that. Also if you ever want to revisit My Chemical Romance, I really want to know/see how you like the album The Black Parade. it's a concept album and a rock opera, the songs tell a full story. Spoiler alert, you probably will cry.
And throw away every expectations you have for the "kids cartoons" because in second season it went really intense lol. Like from 0 to 100 lol. No spoilers tho.
@@levangiorgadze5842 exactlyyyyyyyyy. tho there are some scenes in the 1st season that hit the *ball* out of the park. really just *transform* my feelings about the show
The Beast gives you something to do that'll keep "your life" going, but it's a meaningless tedium that merely keeps you going and going and going and going until you can't, or you fail
How did you not bawl your eyes out at that one scene, namely when the sad version of potatoes and molasses started playing, I can't even hear the song without crying.
I love the whole soundtrack. I love it all. Especially this colonial American era it resides in. With influences from old animation, folklore, and mr toad of course.
Just rewatched the series (as I like to do around this time of year) and so I wanted to rewatch your reaction video too. I really love your commentary and reactions, Bill. You give so much emotion and depth that really adds a whole extra layer of awesome to an already incredible show. Happy Halloween! I hope you're doing well
Something I always wondered about the show when the frog glowed at the end people are implying that they had been to that world but me I always had a very disturbing thought that they never left some of the lyrics in the end is like the loveliest lies of all did they even survive the drowning and this is just a continuation of that world
Bill this was such a treat to watch I was really hoping you would do a full review of Over the Garden Wall!! I'm so glad you loved it as much as we all did. For your next forest themed, slightly ominous, spooky adventure I'd love to see you react to Hozier and his music. I think it would make for a great video! Love all that you do and I look forward to all your videos!
I love this show so much, it became my Halloween tradition to watch it on Halloween since I first saw it. (about 3-4 years now xD) Also, The Little Mermaid isn't Grimm, but I get what you meant :)
You'd love infinity train! It's a little hard to find to watch, but it's right up your alley with metaphors and working through your emotions (I dont want to spoil it lol). Season 2 is in the work right now too!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I love the show so much and I definitely watch it every fall season at least once. It is definitely one of my favourite shows of all time. I really enjoy the embeguity of wether what happened in the unknown was real or not. Because there is the aspect of, it might be limbo or maybe a dream but we also see what happens to the characters in the unknown after Wirt and Greg are gone, indictating that it wasn't just a dream. And then Jason Funderberker (the Frog) glowed in the end which looks like he still has the magic bell inside him, which means that they actually had been in the unknown. The mystery of it and how it is never really explained. It adds to the mysterious kind of spooky vibe of the series that matches so well with fall and halloween.
So many people think The Beast could be a Windigo and Beatrice could be a spirit guide, here’s just a few things The Beast hav in common. The first thing people point out is that The Beast has long wide horn like antlers so many assume that this makes him a Wendigo like creature, well the thing about Wendigos is that they really didn’t have horns or antlers, that was adapted by Europeans to make it more scary. The Wendigo had the ability to also mimic voices of family members so that they could lead people off the forest paths, once again The Beast does this in some capacity; while not directly mimicking people’s voices he definitely manipulates people so that he gets what he wants. The final thing is that Wendigos had ice hearts and in some stories could never die as their heart would regenerate a new body around it. The only was to fully kill a Wendigo is to burn the ice heart, just like how to kill The Beast you needed to blow out his lantern. This is just some similarities that The Beast had to Wendigos but it’s clear The Beast also takes inspiration from many different creatures and characters like pan the Greek god of the wild, which could explain his antlers and general vibe of a singing loon. In my opinion The Beast is of an amalgamation of many different monsters but the majority seem to be European in nature, like how The Beast’s Lantern could be a reference to the idea that you need a light to see God’s true glory just flipped on it’s head you can only find yourself and your way out by blowing out the lantern of lies that is The Beast. I think it’s a shame that most people forget that Europeans have a rich lore of characters and culture beyond the Greeks and Romans and I wish people realize that just because something is spiritual in nature makes it Native American, however that’s not the point of this so I move on. This is just a brief lesson about what The Beast could be so I’m sorry for wasting your day, enjoy your Fall.
I just noticed Bill's glasses look like mine lol Happy you watched and enjoyed OtGW, it's been a while since I watched it so I might rewatch it soon. Aside from Adventure Time, the only other show I recommend now is Infinity Train, which is the same length as OtGW at this moment, free to watch on the CN app for the rest of the year
How am I crying when there's just some very cut audio, stills, and your reaction? This is my favorite tv series tied with Gravity Falls. So wonderful! I'm very happy you enjoyed it.
i’m so glad you watched over the garden wall. over the garden wall is my favorite cartoon of ALL time and that’s coming from someone who went to school for animation. it’s so beautiful in its entirety and i can’t help but watch the entire ten episodes in one sitting when i want to rewatch it. i love your views on it and once again am glad you enjoyed it.
Ur analysis is always so good!! The point on every character having something they needed to repent for COMPLETELY went over my head the first few times i watched it, ur work is always so perceptive!!
There are theories that over the garden wall's forest is similar to Dante's inferno. An interstice of purgatory dimenstion-time travels, fantasy and dream like landscapes. It can be real but also fantasy Wirt and greg's hometown is aberdale from clarence Wirt is son of shermie pines (gravity falls) and Greg is universe (steven universe) Endticott is realted to their mother amking them real relatives. A black train is infinity train in different form Sara is connie's mom(SU)
