I haven't actually seen this show all the way through but I've seen bits and pieces from when it was all over Tumblr. I always thought it looked like a fun show but the way people talked about the ending put me off of giving it a chance. Watching your review is making me want to actually just go ahead and see for myself. Plus if I don't like the ending, there's always fanfic 😉 (Also I agree Toffee is daddy)

After all these years, I still fucking adore Star's fashion sense. Nothing has screamed so much "happy go lucky girl from another dimension" as her outfits. Also, ditto in that "damn, Disney, what happened? You used to be cool" because if you ever do watch Amphibia, that was running very close to Owl House in terms of popularity, you realize that the "it doesn't fit the brand" excuse makes absolutely no sense unless you count for the fact that Owl House is openly embracing of queer identities and Amphibia it was more "blink and you miss it" kind of representation. They were both fantasy shows that pushed how dark a plot line full with kids could get, that had some horrible imaginery and got very serious, but only one of them finished on their own terms.

Sure, the later seasons are kind of bad, but in it's purest form, this show is extremely overhated and deserves so much more love.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Star Vs is legitimately so good and just enjoyable fun. The show was one of my favorite series on TV back when it was first coming out and I still have a soft spot for it.

With how many of these shows have made you cry, it's nice to see you laughing so much.

This was unexpected! I love this series, I'm so happy that you are watching and commenting it! I think it keeps getting better every season. Sure, I didn't like the ending, but that doesn't mean the series isn't enjoyable. Plus, Star is such a great protagonist! She's so unhinged, I love her xD.

i know a lot of people hate the later seasons and the finale but im one of the few people that enjoyed the whole show from start to end because i never took it serously and me and my friends enjoyed watching it as it was airing.

One of my favourite details I was hoping you'd notice is that when Pony Head rips up the poster at St. Olga's, there are hidden words on the ripped part that now make the poster read "Embrace your individuality." This show was just okay to me until this episode where it suddenly showed me what it wanted to say and it was super interesting, I'm excited to see what you think of the later seasons, even if, yeah, I personally think there are flaws at the end.

Season 1 of this show is so outstanding, it's really a tragedy where the later parts of the show went.

Everyone always says the shipping is too much but like Idk It’s one of the most realistic young romances I’ve seen. Real life is messy. And complicated. And I like that this show really captures that I think it’s a different show if you approach it as a romance first and a fantasy second

This is going to be an interesting series. I haven't really rewatched it since I finished it, save for one rewatch of the Season 3 opening. Like many others, I feel the show started to fall off quite hard towards the end. However, I am also in a difficult position because my favorite character gets introduced right at the end of the show's "golden age". Either way, I think Season 2 is my favorite, so I hope you enjoy it. Outside of spoilers, they even just have more experimental and fun episode ideas that play well into a serialized episodic show

There are so many moments where I flinched and went, "JUST YOU WAIT BUDDY." A few responses (while avoiding spoilers): Your comment about them being friends and hoping for no romantic development: I totally agree, I think they are a GREAT demonstration of close friendship/found siblings, and I love how they both really watch out for each other, learn from each other, and are so great at taking accountability for their mistakes and providing each other with the grace to grow. It's one of my favorite depictions of friendship in Disney shows. =) Your comments about "Daddy" Toffee: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL🤣🤣🤣 I'm not exactly there with you, BUT I do see what you're seeing lol. But in terms of his more "corporate" style of takeover, and your theory on how it may play out later in possibly tying with the history of Mewni, that's not really something I noticed but found SUPER interesting when you pointed it out! Ludo's pencil holder: I'VE WATCHED THIS SHOW THREE TIMES AND I'VE NEVER NOTICED THAT PENCIL HOLDER OHMYGOSH🤣 Your commentary about Owl House being cancelled for their queer elements while SVTFOE (and MANY other shows) run around making all these sexual jokes, innuendos, or references: AIN'T THAT SOME S***. I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out, BUT YOU'RE SO RIGHT. And I JUST finished The Owl House last weeK SO I'M FURIOUS ALL OVER AGAIN. When I first tried watching SVTFOE, I couldn't get through it because it was very annoying to me (can't even describe exactly why this was YEARS ago). Then I started seeing on Tumblr that there was a trans character, which at the time was INCREDIBLY revolutionary for a "kids" show. So I gave it another shot. Went through the WHOLE show, and had things that I both loved and HATED. Turns out there was no trans character, it was just a bunch of fan theories about how Marco was a trans woman because of that episode at St. Olga's. I honestly was pretty pissed about that, and it negatively impacted how I felt about the show. But, one of the things I found interesting was how they explore colonialism, and by my third time of watching it from beginning to end, I absolutely loved it. You've already started to see snippets of it with the history of Mewni, as well as Star's developing empathy and willingness to question what she's been lead to believe. What they do with this later in the series was honestly MIND BLOWING, particularly for me - someone who spent their entire academic career researching post-colonialism, conflict analysis, and peacebuilding. I know it's "just" a kids show, but so many of these shows (SVTFOE, The Owl House, STEVEN UNIVERSE!!!!, etc) are fascinating and understatedly elaborate explorations of colonialism - from the undertones of racism, to the themes of control and indoctrination, to even displacement and reparations. And SVTFOE did something that I don't think I've ever seen done, which was SO interesting to me and even spurred me to start a personal research paper on it. I can't wait for you to get to that point of the series, and I'm really glad you've enjoyed it so far. =)

Very excited to see you watch more of this! I honestly really loved the series aside from a few of the later episodes, but I truly miss the world they created here. It takes a lot of dark turns that don't treat the audience as stupid which I enjoyed.

it's cool to see you covering this show! i actually never knew there was discourse in the wider fanbase over the later seasons and ending; i watched it on my own time a few years back and really liked it then, although maybe i'm forgetting some of it now or something. regardless of how 'good' it is overall, i hope you enjoy your watching of it as we enjoy your analysis :)

Marco's parents have a Gomez and Morticia Addams vibe with how they passionately love each other all the time, it's great.

i loved the show's political drama it eventually builds up to, i think the mystery it develops is REALLY good. the colonialization episode and Marco Kidnapped By Toffee episode were just the beginning of it. (tho i will say i am one of the people that didnt care for the finale and/or the show's romance subplots. for me: the highlight was very much THIS kind of stuff) part of the reason why i liked it was definitely bc i am Indigenous American. it wasnt a good allegory in MANY ways that i could write an essay on (poc = monsters, for example, is not a good look generally is ONE such way) but it was the first time i had ever seen it discussed at all in children'a television so i do kind of like that aspect. im so used to most Indigenous shout-outs being Thanksgiving episodes (Friends, B99, Gilmore Girls, etc) where our genocide is acknowledged for a bit of comedy (usually as a "flimsy excuse" as to why a character doesnt like to celebrate the holiday and not the real reason), that even with all its flaws, i really respected this show for trying (which also makes me want to mention that you should consider checking out "Hailey's On It!" which is a new Disney animaed show that features an Indigenous Hawaiian family! yay!! its really good so far, i wont spoil it tho since the twists in the first few episodes are like "you should go in wholly blind" but yeah you should watch it, there's only one season out so far, its really sweet lmao) also, good on you for recognizing the clover-cheeks meaning (the meaning being she is related to Mewni in some way) + the school's in-tandem meaning (that it was a school for wayward princesses and the headmistress attended this school, meaning she is royal in some way or form)!! you got closer than i did about what her story is lmao Toffee is forever one of my favorite villains in all time and i wish we knew more about him. we unfortunately get more of his style than we do his history, though his history is fun to learn (all of the royal/monster history is fun to learn here lmao) Tom is actually one of my favorite characters in the show (matched only with (Toffee and) Buff Frog. we love Buff Frog lmao), i love Tom and Marco's eventual bond ♡ (tho the entire time, i was like "Vibes? Vibes??? Vibes??" at them, i will admit) as a fun fact: a lot of people say Marco was supposed to transition into a transgirl throughout the series, like that such was part of the show's concept plot, but that Disney largely nixed the idea (minus "crossdressing for comedy" basically). idk if that is confirmed or what, but you can definitely see signs of it if so ♡ as for your questions: (ignore if they were rhetorical) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . *yeah, it is an "Oh, Bill..." unfortunately *They're not "hell married" lmao the Blood Moon means their destinies and souls are intertwined now (which? could be platonic??? but definitely sounds romantic). the consequences of this dance come up later so i will leave it at "destinies and souls intertwined forever now" lmao *Marco's arm doesn't REALLY come back in any significant way that I can recall?? but i havent seen Star Vs since it aired... they end up uhhhhh "distracted" by a different uhhh "evolution" about Marco and his body changing and that takes precedence. i am undecided if the tentacle-arm was a foreshadow of that "evolution" or not. but, no, once you get what i mean by "Marco has another body change the show focuses on way more", you'll see they wholly drop the tentacle-arm thing (tho i think they drop it for a while anyway. cant recall exactly) *I won't spoil anything about Toffee *The family's name is "Butterfly", yes, Star's mom is named Moon Butterfly and her dad is River Butterfly (it's? implied?? her dad took her mom's surname? her dad's name used to be River Johansen). i like your analysis of butterflies = pain and blood for monsters! i dont think the show verbally says if their surname has any meaning, but i like your interpretation A LOT and i think it is supported by some of the... butterfly-iness the Butterfly family is revealed to have later too. but the Butterfly family as a whole is really cool and youll like learning about the past Queens of Mewni for sure lmao

My, my how quickly we forgot our favourite Dadleton and his giraffe nips. 😔 I’m excited for you to enjoy this show for what it is at its core, then to love it for the complexity it brings as the stories and relationships develop through the seasons. I too was a late comer to the series, but I literally had no idea of the hate it received until I started to really see memes around the internets. 😅 So I was able to really enjoy and consume the series in its entirety and it became one of my favourite “comfort” shows that I do frequently revisit. Fun fact about Marco: originally he was going to be more comfortable in the dress and pretending to be a princess, and realize that *she* felt more comfortable as a girl. Disney of course however nipped this in the bud. Honestly I love the Marco we got, but it would have been cool and interesting to see how the show would have handled something like this, it also makes you wonder how it would have changed things in terms of the later seasons.

Random fun fact: im not sure how, but the intro to this show was stuck in my head for a week before i watched the show. I had NEVER heard this intro either- i don't know how i managed to know half of the lyrics one day. Maybe i forgot about hearing it, but... Dude, when I started watching, I FREAKED out because i didnt recognize anything but the lyrics it played. Not the characters, not anything in the very strange and memorable intro animations- the lyrics. That's it.

The big problem with this show is that the creators seem to got too wrapped up in the shipping.

One of the only shows I really watched all the fantheories of. Like the drama was realll. Loved the first couple seasons and then loved episodes from some later seasons, and character development. Omg s1. Also this era had so many male disney protagonists witn brown hair and red hoodies/shirts.

I'm so happy you started this series!! It made me remember how much I liked it. I used to follow the weekly releases when it started and haven't watched it since, so this is really a throwback. I also never got to the last batch of episodes because I heard they were bad (and it was a difficult period for me), so I kind of forgot them and never went back to check them out, I'm very curious to see what happend and what your reaction is going to be! And yeah, thank you for reminding people this series exist, it has so many cool and interesting concepts, characters designs, music, aahh I might do a rewatch thanks to these videos

Oh brother, unless season 2 manages to drastically change Bill’s opinions, I can already tell how he’ll feel about the ending.

This video took me back, with how the rest of the show turned out you juts forget how solid the first season was, fun and full of potential. Is not over yet though.

If you want a fun show with a completely platonic male and female lead duo I highly recommend Wander Over Yonder. It's only two seasons long but is a great time from start to finish with a lot of heartwarming moments.

The one thing I think about most when I think about Star Vs is the Trans Girl Marco Theory/Headcanon-it got super popular and supposedly some of the crew wanted to make it canon, but supposedly weren't allowed at the time. There's even concept art of a Marco doll with a transflag dress if I remember right! They weren't allowed to put that in either. :(

I watched this show some time ago and it was great, the later seasons are good as well and the ending wasn't so bad For everyone that says the ending came out of nowhere, that's not true, they literally foreshadowed how this show was going to end

It's great to hear your thoughts on it, cause as a kid I did NOT notice any of the warning signs that Star's kingdom was kinda messed up, I just wanted to know what Toffee was doing. wow i forgot how good the first season was, had a lot of fun watching you react and reliving it again i know it's easier said than done and it's different because you're a creator, but don't worry too much about the "discourse" your opinions are well thought out and honest, and even if you end up enjoying something people found disappointing, i'd just be happy for you that you can experience it like that instead of negatively, it's a win for you also just a fun tidbit, a detail i remember that i didn't see you mention, the reform school episode, at the end, there's a shredded painting that had the schools slogan that now reads "embrace your individuality" which i thought was neat

I love such a positive outlook on 1 of my favourite shows. Seasons 1-3 r amazing and great, and while season 4 is pretty weak, most of its flaws r concentrated in the ending, which while does have bad parts, also has some smart and interesting messages which I loved. A lot of people don't like how the show handled some social themes such as the monster's thing in "Mewnipendence day", but I actually love how they did it because this major theme in the show reflects the evolution of my views when it comes to certain things. Some people complain that the show portrays monsters as dangerous, but it doesn't. Mewman propaganda does. In the actual "Mewnipendence day" ep we see that they were originally unarmed and out of all the monsters we see in s1 only Ludo and Toffee r evil. And in addition to both of them being forced into such positions by society, is Ludo really evil? And Toffee seems more of an exception then the rule. The truth is, the title of the show - "Star vs the forces of evil" also plays games with us, as even in s1 we're not sure which of our enemies IS exactly that evil and what does it want. And by season 4 it becomes even more apparent. Which I think is brilliant.

If you get the metaphor then I really think you will enjoy this show all the way through. I really enjoyed the ending - the writers did an amazing job with it, and I don't think it could have ended another way and had the impact that it did. I really, truly don't understand why so many people were upset with it. I wouldn't stress too much about enjoying it, either way, really enjoyed this video and am glad you are liking it so far!

I like this series it’s fun. But there are a few elements of world building and plot that you don’t want to think deeply about because they have nightmare fuel implications

I’m glad you’re watching it because I think you’d be much more open and willing to analyze the messages in future seasons. The show also was made right before Disney changed CEO’s and lgbt content was sadly still repressed during this era. There are definitely hints though, if you pay attention… Marco princess hint hint….

So I've only actually watched the first two seasons, but thought they were great. Didn't stop for any particular reason and have always been kinda curious about the rest of it, especially given the overblown discourse around it. Maybe Bill reacting to it will finally motivate me to finish it myself, may as well rewatch season 2 as well for a refresher. This is honestly the most entertainingly chaotic reaction from Bill, and I'm really excited for more.

If you're looking for another series to do these Trying to Stan-s on, I would recommend Worthikids' "Bigtop Burger". It just wrapped up it's second season, and it's so good, and also quite short. I think it'd be a good one to do music for first, like you did for SU, in which case I'd recommend - Up - Down - Friends in Low Places - In Your Heart - Up (Reprise)

My favorite stuff is the drama with Star's family and with monsters

A great show: the final season has some rocky moments and the ending is, at best, OK: but still a good season overall. I didn't get what was actually going on until I read a tumblr comment, then I whacked the heel of my hand against my temple and went "of course!!": it also partially excused the ending and the elements in the build up to it that people don't like, as it can be seen as intended to obscure the very un-Disney act that's actually the shows real plot engine (sorry I'm being so obscure, but I'm trying to avoid spoilers).

The ending of the show, in my opinion at least, wasn't terrible, it just felt rushed, as if they were trying to pack way too much into not enough episodes. I think a lot of the hate towards this show was unnecessary, but I do see where a lot of the criticisms come from. Despite this, SVtFoE was, and has always been, a huge comfort show to me. The show ended around a month before Amphibia began, so I really had both of these shows as a huge part of my childhood and early teen years. I know not many people still do, but there was a time where SVtFoE was definitely ranked high alongside shows like Gravity Falls, Amphibia, and The Owl House.

I hope not too many people will drag you into the discourse. The show's really great! I hope to see you react to the other seasons cause it's a lovely little show😊

Unpopular opinion, I actually enjoyed the show, every season. I will admit, season 1 has something about it that makes it stand out, maybe that’s just nostalgia talking, but overall I really enjoyed the series. The other seasons aren’t bad as people make them out to be. They are actually pretty good, and I didn’t hate the ending either. I’d rate it a 8/10 show. Of course, this is my personal opinion, I’m excited to see your opinion on the show as you progress.

If like... 90% of the Fandom of a show agrees yo never speak of the show itself ever again after it's ending..... It must be for a good reason right? 😂 While i don't think that the whole show is unwatchable because of the ending..... It is pretty difficult watching it in retrospect and not sigh in disappointment knowing what it all leads to. For what it's worth.... I hope you enjoy watching it, i think it's gonna be much more digestible seeing this series once again through the eyes of someone new to it. Also Fun Fact: Moon Butterfly (Star's mom) and Jackie Lynn Thomas are voiced by Azula (Grey Griffin).
