This is painful to watch but I understand its completely necessary. My old mk3 1.6 Ghia had a sunroof and it went rusty in the same place. Also the battery tray area was a common spot on the mk3 and mk4.

What a chap! I remember loving these cars as a kid in the 90s. I love coming across people that are in to the same cars as me....especially 90s vaux and Ford hatches/ saloons. You probably get a lot of hate for tracking an old RS, but you keep the outside of the car really clean, with tasteful/functional mods. I really rate your work. Fantastic to see a sickk carbon roof, on what would otherwise be a shell that's scrap. Keep the decent looking motors alive! And functional. Wish I had the same skills you have! Your a legend! I've got a mate who's dad is also rebuilding a mk4 escort, he is full on rebuilding it, it Has been full on stripped repainted and atm it's a rolling shell, but he's ordered a new engine block, can't wait to see the thing driving

Great progress in a short space of time 👌 you done well getting hold of a carbon roof. I went for a non sun roof skin and paid a fortune getting it professionally spot welded on!

What a transformation on weight and aesthetics, great job, thats an amazing example of an old RS given it basically has no interior lol, you gonna need loads of downforce now if its that easy to lift haha

Just bought my second RS Turbo and again the roof rusting away. I love the job you did on your roof and i wont to do the same thing. I was wondering where you bought your carbonfiber roof skin from? Omg Aaron got a similar situation on my dads black rs s2 located an bought a complete rot free mk4 roof off to the bodyshop January tailgate changed too otherwise a mint shell

did you source the bonding yourself or did the roof suppliers send it? only reason i ask is you should have put a silicon primer on the remains of the old roof panel first (same stuff they put on panels before they put windscreen sealer on)...i think you said you prepped/keyed up the remains of the roof panel so should be ok, just with that silicone primer you would have got a much better bond between the steel and carbon,, obviously cant do much about it now

Completely agree on not fitting the pillar trims, they don't even look good and they're purely for aesthetic purposes?! It does seem odd chopping the roof out but the end result is fantastic. Are you concerned about the roof going brittle when exposed sunshine over a period of time (seems to be mixed opinions on how UV effects carbon fibre and the resins). Can't wait to see the interior fully painted. Great work keep it up.

Love the project and the vids! The roof looks good but shouldn't you have removed the paint so that the bond was formed between the carbon and the remaining steel part of the roof? Now the carbon roof is effectively only held on by the strength of the paint underneath it, does it make any difference?

Hi , I totally understand the problems the Mk3 & Mk4 Escorts have with the sunroof problems and rust . I honestly think you have done a fantastic job . My only concern is you have removed the inner roof skin .... I agree carbon is stronger but everything depends on depth with Grp

My rs was the same, brake hard and your head would get covered in rust, I ended up with stripping out the xr3efi that I had to use the good shell, apparently those were built in Germany so didn't rust the same.

Get a MK2 GTE 16v, sunroofs dont rust and has the power to pull it! Lol...Just playing, nice car, nice job! 👍🏻

My RST's roof is exactly like yours (full of rust) i remember when i used to floor it rust would rain onto my head :( Ive always wondered what would be the best way to sort it and this looks like a good option Mine dosnt have a cage and also id prefer it if the car was kept all white , can the carbon be painted ? Good work, I would have been shi#ing myself cutting that off with an angle grinder.

Maybe should have rounded off the corners when cutting the roof skin so it looks smart from the inside.
