I Fixed My Bump Steer - The Right Way!

Bump steer is a very dangerous suspension alignment issue that occurs in vehicles that have had changes made to there over all ride height when the tie rod end and lower control arm are no longer parallel. To correct this, it is recommended to instal a "Bump Steer Kit" which helps bring the tie rod end more in alignment with the lower control arm. In this case I will be installing the bump steer kit on a 1992 Ford Fox Body Mustang 5.0 however the instal instructions will be relevant to all vehicle makes and models.

I watched lmr videos and they never even say to make sure it’s Parrellel to the control are at ride height. They do it with the tires off. Glad I saw this video.

Your video production has come a long way the past few yrs bud, excellent job, i also never realized how good those headers look on your car. If long tubes weren't such a pain to deal with id put a set like those on mine. Hell moght even still be worth the hassle with how good they look and sound lol.

Great video Gary, the SVE bump steer worked great on my 04 GT, i had bought it with already had lowering springs on the front, man did it made a difference on how the car reacts to bumps, potholes, even big water puddles. It sure is a must for anyone that lowers their car. Thanks for the shot out, hope the trunk liner works and looks good for you. Thanks buddy!

Pro tip here: Take a piece of masking tape and put it on the center of the fender for a consistent reference point of measurement each and every time. While the car is on the ground, take a measurement from the bottom of your masked point on your fenderwell down to the centreline of your front wheel bearing on the hub. Now you can put the car on jackstands & remove the front wheels or both front wheels & with a block under the ball joint, Jack up on the lower control arm until you get your measurement backfrom the hub bearing to fenderwell to simulate ride height with the suspension compressed. Now measuring bumpsteer is super easy as the front end is essentially at "ride height" but the wheels are off.

Measure from the inner tie rod Boot to the outer tie rod jam Nut, before you loosen it. Assuming you are re-using that nut.

Great video. Just a comment on the bumpsteer kits. I’ve used a couple on fox mustangs with good success. My pace car has a set from maximum Motorsports. I have had issue with passing a safety from some local inspectors. If you can, get a safety inspection done before installation.
@NewEdgeDesigns
@NewEdgeDesigns 11 месяцев назад
It shouldn’t effect your safety inspection, I pass every year with these on..

I had issues with it on an out of province inspection. Totally new rebuild so it stuck out. They passed it but were asking for DOT approval.

Wow! I honestly don’t know the “rules” surrounding it but would sure like to. That said, you’d think they would applaud the fact that it’s now safe. However, the whole lowered thing can be frowned upon as well tho… us car guys just can’t win 😂

Hi Gary. Great video! My only question is, how do you determine when the tie rod is parallel to the control arm? Is there a measurement to be taken? Anyway, really looking forward to all the future content, especially the truck lid sans wing and the Average Fox build. As always, Thanks! Bill. 🦊🙂
@KASLCustoms
@KASLCustoms 11 месяцев назад
Hey Bill! Well buddy, i wish i had a more sophisticated answer for you but… i just eyeball it 😂. The wife says I’m pretty good at hanging pictures so therefore i feel I’m a certified parallel engineer 😉🍻.
@frosty_silver_fox4292
@frosty_silver_fox4292 10 месяцев назад
Hey Bill, there is most definitely a sophisticated way of going about this if you want to really get into this and dive deep down the old rabbit hole. Just a RU-vid maximum motorsports bump steer measuring tool and Peruse a few of jacks videos. You can get extremely involved in the process if you want and spend a full 10 hour day taking measurements and cycling the suspension to achieve absolutely zero bump steer. As Gary mentioned for 98% of us it's easiest to just eyeball things as close to parallel as possible while suspension is at ride height, and your chances are about 95% that your car is going to handle perfectly fine with nothing to complain about. If your car is as low as Gary's or mine is, eyeballing the tire rod and the control arm at ride height is going to be pretty tricky. I have another comment here also on how to achieve that with you if need be🤘🏼

I saw you were using 96-04 spindles and curious why your didn’t use 94-95 with stock kmember and an arms? I have team z 12” arms and k member with 96-04 spindles and strange coilovers… I’m not sure if I can be doing something better especially because I keep ripping sway bar tabs off the arms?
@KASLCustoms

Should this always be done with a load on it? Cause LMR shows tires hanging on regular lift while installing bump steer... Also what would make my Stabilizer links on a angle facing the back of the car??? I got the lowering links. Its lowered on SVE lowering spring & strut kit? Any help greatly appreciated
@KASLCustoms
@KASLCustoms 10 месяцев назад
Yes I would recommend having weight on the suspension. It’s the only way to truly get the angle correct. As for your sway bar links, has some one changed where the sway bar mounts to the frame?
@dvinpeace

No, but they put on tubular lower control arms

Are your headers chrome, or, ceramic coated? I couldn't see them clearly enough to tell. I ordered ceramic coated on mine and the manufacturer replaced them twice before I bit the bullet and had them Jet Hot Coated to stop the rust. Thank you.
@KASLCustoms
@KASLCustoms 11 месяцев назад
No i sure wish they were ceramic. These are the BBK “chrome” ones that only look decent for the first 20 miles…
@crabbypapa3862
@crabbypapa3862 11 месяцев назад
That is the company I used, 6 months and started rusting. White feature car, silver Jet Hot Coated the rest of the exhaust system, and you can see the collectors from the side. It's been 3 years, and , silver in this process not being available, the white coating is still not rusting. Lifetime warranty on it. I like to see which ceramic coating doesn't rust. So far all but the earliest, driven, ones seem to.@@KASLCustoms
