I Fixed the Brickyard 400 

I like how David's solution to fixing the Brickyard 400 is to essentially turn it into the Indy 500

David is always keeping me up to date with racing and now Spelling OSFF=CLT is now how "Difficult" is spelled 😂😂😂

I completely agree with you David. It has just become another race. And throwing it back on the Oval and not making it unique doesn't change anything. I would totally love to see this proposed format implemented.

I'm way in on this format. One to add, no overtime finishes. It's 160 laps and 400 miles.

I like the idea in spirit, but we can't just make it the same as the Indy 500. I suggest: -Same qualifying rules as is used in the Daytona 500. -40 car field, meaning the charter teams will be in but there will still be bump day drama in the qualifying races. -Xfinity series goes back to IRP for a Saturday night race the night before the big show. That way they can still do the double header with IRL at Indy road. You're not getting rid of stages, Green-White-Checkers, or double file restarts, but you could convince them to remove the Stage Cautions.

Unrestricted single car time trials. NEW Track Record!

Using David's video as inspiration this is how I would do it. - 33 cars - Friday Qualifying - No stage in race but stage points for top 10 in qualifying, 1 playoff point for pole sitter - No Xfinity Series on the oval. They can go to IRP, Sat night. - Saturday is going to have 3, 40 lap, 100 mile qualifying races. Kind of like Daytona 500, front row in this case 3 rows, locked in on speed, rows 2 - 10 on finishing order, row 11 reverts back to time trials for fastest 3 cars that didn’t race their way in. 1 playoff point to each race winner - David's 3 wide start and single file restarts out of 4 are good ideas - No stages in the race. - I'm torn if Daytona 500, Coke 600, Brickyard 400, and Southern 500 should be double points. But a bonus playoff point or 2 should be given to the winner . - Charter teams that miss the field all get 35th place points (so 5 points) and purse. - Throwback paint schemes BUT based on former Indy 500 and Brickyard 400 winning cars. More generally I think the 4 NASCAR majors (Daytona, Charlotte, Indy, and Darlington) should have the following: - No locked in spots, playoff drivers locked in only for Darlington since it is playoff race (playoffs are another topic) - Qualifying races, Thursday night for other 3, Saturday for the Brickyard - Extra bonus point / just playoff point or two for the winner - No stages or at least no stage cautions, let those big races develop organically - Set race distance no GWC for those races.

I agree with almost everything you say. I don’t like the 3 wide start and only 33 cars. Used to when it was open qualifying the Daytona 500 would have 50 cars show up so I think the whole no one is safe would still be the case with 40 cars.

I think it's good. I would go with the old 90s-early 2000s nascar qualifying with first and second round qualifying. And then all 4 of the crown jewel races have that format, and all 4 have the qualifying races. (The four being Daytona, 600, Brickyard, Southern 500) Also, use the tarnished road course reputation and put the xfinity cars on it

I agree Dr. David- Make the race special-When Formula 1 started the Indy 500 was part of the Schedule because they wanted to make it special-Many Indy 500 Drivers Have Podium finishes.

Haha I love that fixing the 400 is follow the 500 rules. Definitely should make it on Labor Day weekend. Then we would have Memorial Day and Labor Day in Indianapolis.

After reading some of the comments in here, I can totally see NASCAR use a different weekend format for their crown jewel races. Make it something that makes that weekend different, and not only have pressure on just the Brickyard 400, but also any of the other crown jewel races that have this format. Run a separate mini championship of the crown jewels, a la IMSA Endurance Cup, Indiana Midget/Sprint Week, etc, and advertise a purse bonus to the top points finisher in each of the crown jewels. Hell, throw it back and say that if you can win all the crown jewels in a year, you get a million bucks. Races that would be a crown jewel in my eyes would be: Daytona 500, Coke 600, Southern 500, Brickyard 400, and the Bristol Night Race. Yes, I know, Bristol isn't a "crown jewel", but you can't deny that the race is must watch TV. This is definitely more than just elevating the Brickyard 400, but any of the NASCAR races that are supposed to be special, don't really feel special to most people nowadays. Doing this will make people actually watch the crown jewel races outside of it being, "Oh, its the Brickyard 400".

Cancel me, but NASCAR and Indycar should hold a double header for the month of may, but use the entire city of indy for the month of May. Road course, IRP, the dirt track, and the oval in whatever way plausible

You have brought Indycar into NASCAR with the qualifying and three abreast start. Well, then throw some F1 into it and bring three very different tire compounds to liven things up just a tad more. I do like your ideas, keep the good stuff coming.

There should also be a mandatory 40-lap clockwise go-kart stint for every driver. Each team would choose the best moment for that. Talk about exclusiveness! Of course the name of the race would be Brickyard 200 or Brickyard 200 presented by IU Health Methodist Hospital.

Nascar won't go for this because it has become a show where all teams expect to get in the race. Nascar hands out participation points and advertising exposure every Sunday. You pretty much explained how the Daytona 500 used to be. In the early 2000s and the 90s, speedweeks was like 3 weeks of racing before the 500. And it used to all be on TV. The Speed Channel (RIP) along with Fox/ABC/CBS/NBC used to air every practice, qualifying, qualifying races, etc for every series racing that week. They had 2 weeks of practice, then qualifying the Sunday before the 500, the Goody's Dash Series (which was actually an awesome race even though they were only going about 160mph), Twin 125s, ARCA, Trucks, Busch (yes, i still call it the Busch Series), and then the 500. I hate that it's only 1 week now and they practice one time.

NASCAR would never let a super big name or one of their own stars sit out an event. Indycar sent Alonso home. It is special and exclusive.

How about this for an idea: DOUBLE the points. Make it two playoff points for a stage win and ten for a race win. And eliminate the stage cautions to support this; force strategy calls by teams in order to get stage points.

I wish we did this for all 4 crown jewels, had a unique format I mean. I like this, but also doing a 4 lap average qualifying for the Southern 500, and a return of All-Star qualifying for the 600 would be great.

We need to nascar this format. If Indycar still wants me the double header. Do a back to back nascar Cup series races. Friday : qualifying Saturday road course heat/ sprint race and Sunday is the oval. The road course race determines position for Sunday. This will make front of felid Sunday more interesting.

Crazy solution, have Roger Penske bring back F1 to Indy and have a NASCAR-F1 double header That will bring back the big attendances of the Brickyard 400

I actually think single file restarts (with lapped traffic on the inside) should be a thing that comes back full time in NASCAR. The double file restarts are exciting, but they've pretty much neutered alternative tire strategy. If three cars take two tires or stay out, the first car that takes four tires is just going to line up in the second row and blow by the people staying out for the lead. In a single file restart, if just two cars stay out, the leader has a bit of time to get some distance on P2 and the people with 4 tires to make it interesting. I think this is an aspect of modern NASCAR that doesnt get enough scrutiny as it should.

Here’s my take. Thursday: 6 hours of cup practice on the oval (start at 10AM, go to 4), 2 hour Xfinity practice 5-7 Friday: xfinity qualifying (one shot) at 11 AM, once that’s done, roll the cup guys out for Indy 500 style qualifying. Top 30 are locked in to the feature, they don’t race again until Sunday. ARCA runs a 100 lap race at the Terre Haute Action Track Friday night. Saturday: green flag for the xfinity series Indianapolis 250 drops at 12 noon. 100 laps, no stages. Immediately after the xfinity race, roll the reminder of the cup cars out for a 100 mile (40 lap) B-main. Mandatory 4 tire stop at any point. Top 3 advance (I’d say top 6 but then that’s a normal NASCAR Race). also trucks are running a 1 day show at IRP for the Kroger 200. Sunday: green flag drops at 1 Eastern for the Brickyard 400. 160 laps. No stages, no overtime, the race is 400 miles.

What about this idea? The Brickyard 1000. That’s 1000km. NASCAR has expanded to street courses, racing in the rain. Why not a mini endurance race. You don’t like 100km? Make it 700 miles

Not bad. One issue. You will need a fourth day. Teams will need a day of testing for that format. (Also need to find place for Xfinity practice and qualifying). But you forgot the biggest fix of all. …move it to the oval down the street.

to be honest, I truly believe that the brickyard 400 could really come back in a big way. Hopefully it would happen and give us good racing. The only things I’m sure is that if they go back to the oval, I’ll be there.

I like the plans, but I'd scrap xfinity and make it a two day show. I don't care about stages, restarts, or the three side start - makes little difference to me. Alternate tires are something nascar should definitely do at most tracks.

You won’t need 3 wide restart because the field will already be 3, 4, maybe even 5 wide going down into turn 1. You watch a NASCAR race recently? They were 4 wide at Michigan this past week, lol

Hell, the Indy 500 is on its way to becoming just another race, much less NASCAR.

Also, make it the last race of the regular season before playoffs which would add a bit more urgency to winning for a number of cars. The rest is great.

Honestly That would be intresting if NASCAR got rid of the Charter System and all cars would have to time themselves in to all races. I think it would be soo cool and make qualifying fun and interesting to watch. And it would show the effort and commitment of the teams to show up and be competitive

Hi man, I like the whole thing, but one thing should be going back to the old days that special for Nascar cups series for the brickyard 400. It's used to be cup series only cars in Indy for the nascar series and have an xfinty series go back to Indy Raceway Park or know as Lucas oil irp Saturday night race.

I think lights would work, but I'm willing to compromise, make the last chance qualifier on Saturday night, the duels are at night, hell we're swinging for the fences here might as well add it for the one situation.

Take the fenders and roofs off, narrow up the cars, add wings.

Unique engine package. One race a year. It should focus on fuels or hybrid or other tech, not limiting air into the engine. It could be something the manufacturers embrace, adds drama and uncertainty. It'll never happen due to costs, but it would truly be unique versus format gimmicks.

Here’s what you’re gonna get. Everyone locked in. No practice. One qualifying lap on Saturday. Race on Sunday.

You forgot to so no G-W-C specifically when saying the race needs to be 400 miles. Hated how several of the last few 400's ended up as wreckfests with multiple attempts because the drives would make overly desperate moves to try and win the thing.
