I took a quick flight from Sugarland Texas over to Wharton Regional Airport (KARM) and experienced some clouds that weren't in the forecast. Luckily I was on an Instrument Flight Plan: IFR - Grab your favorite snack and a drink, jump in the right seat, and be my co-pilot on this quick journey through the clouds and on down to the runway.

In 1976, I lived in Wharton, flying copilot on a Swearingen Merlin 3. At that time, there was no instrument approach. I designed an NDB approach and submitted it to the FAA. They approved and published it👍🏻

In 1976, I lived in Wrexham, North Wales where I once got chased by a big bunch of skinheads!. All these years later, Wrexham Football Club have achieved a promotion to the next division, yippie!.....by the way, I was there in 1978 when they they beat Rotherham United 7-1 to gain promotion to division 2, although I didn't see a single goal because my view of the game was being obstructed by inconsiderate ADULTS!, BOOOOO!!!!

YES! Give my a good, old, reliable NDB approach that needs pilot SKILL, and not just on-board electronics doing the flying for you. Yeah, I'm old school, big time. No Autopilot, flying by hand, navigating by VORs by hand, timing approaches with a stopwatch. God flying was FUN when when we aviated, navigated, figured everything out ourselves...Hammer US Army Sr Aviator, FAA Commercial, Inst, etc. dated 1981.

I really like these longer form videos a lot as well as the split screen with the approach plates. As a Houston area student pilot myself, it's so cool seeing this quality of fly along video in this local area, especially in the same sort of aircraft types that I'm more familiar. Don't get me wrong, I love watching Atlantic crossings in da-42s but Little Red is a bit more relatable lol. Keep up the phenomenal work and fly safe!

Worked in Houston a few years ago and went to Wharton where you could take a tandem hang glider ride. A lady would tow you up using a trike while you were on the side-by-side hang glider with an instructor. It was pretty cool and certainly a different kind of flying. Not sure if they are still there as my flights with them were pre-covid. Great instrument approach!!

Kay, you're a great combination of cheerfulness and professionalism. Unfortunately, I haven't flown an airplane in about twenty years, but it's nice to be able to "ride along with you." (My poor Navion was destroyed by a tornado and after that, I just decided that flying had gotten too expensive to continue). I trained on Cherokees. They're wonderful airplanes. You keep aviating and I'll keep tuning in to fly with Kay. -Bob

i enjoy your videos. I am a 7500 hour Cessna 180 pilot. I stopped flying and sold my plane 2 years ago. I was based at KIWS after most of my flying time at KFTW, KCCR, and KIWS. Just a word of caution. ATC has forgotten about me on IFR flights a few times when in IMC. Never forget to fly your plane per the established procedures. Once just outside of KCCR they forgot about me and if I had stayed with the last instruction I would have flown into Mount Diablo. I stayed on the planned ILS approach to KCCR and all ended as it was supposed to. I got the call this number while on the approach. I didn't write it down until I landed. DONT ever be attempted to write down a number while single pilot IFR in IMC. You can get the number later. Thanks for the flights. Stay safe and enthusiastic.
@FlyWithKay
@FlyWithKay Год назад
I got forgotten today! Granted they were super busy and I was in and out of clouds, so I was able to stay safe. As for writing the number down, since I do have autopilot I felt more than comfortable writing it down and reading it back, but I appreciate the feedback!!! I’m glad you were okay, that’s a pretty crazy story, and luckily I haven’t had anything like that happen! Thanks for watching David, I appreciate the support🥰

Kay I'm maybe being over concerned BUT. I saw your oil spill short. #1 if you are adding a full quart of oil... why? When you are 1/2 quart from full you should add 1/2 a quart. How quickly did you lose a quart of oil? Keep proper attention of your engines oil consumption, it means something! Put some jeans on and pop the top so you can "inspect" your entire engine at least from time to time! #2 My funnel gets "cleaned" and very inspected before I use it! Hands will get dirty/oily even in just adding oil. #3 your mechanic only sees your aircraft once a year, it's up to you to visually inspect "all that you can" in-between times. Please put your jeans on and inspect more than you "have to". Look at your control cables and pulleys in the inner empennage area, give them a wiggle and a tug, battery not loose and no corrosion, electric cables all good, etc... vibrations loosen things no matter how good your mechanic is and you fly a-lot so... Please pull panels and "inspect". Robert
@FlyWithKay
@FlyWithKay Год назад
Hi Robert! So I always add a full quart when my airplane needs oil, which is only every 15 hours or so. And according to everyone who has ever worked on Lil Red, that is great! I inspect my airplane every single time I fly, and pop the hood before every big cross country. I don’t pull panels off because I’m not an A&P and at this time, I don’t have any interest in it. That being said, I have my A&P check things quite often, I just don’t always film it. As far as the cleaning funnel thing goes, this was a learning experience and so now I know for next time. Thanks for the concern and fly safe!!

Your read back was not correct: "cross cavyi at or above 3000 cleared direct wharton". No need to get the phone number from ATC, the phone number in the Chart Supplement (AF/D) listed for Clearance Delivery at ARM is the same number ATC expects you to call upon landing to close the IFR flight plan, and was the same number they provided you. Foreflight includes the Chart Supplement with all of the charts. Personally once I get below the clouds *AND* I have and can maintain legal VFR conditions I'll simply cancel in the air.

I usually do too, but I’m this case I felt more comfortable staying on the CTAF frequency and calling from the ground. When I have a co-Pilot on board to help monitor everything I will usually switch back and cancel in the air. I still remember when I was in flight school because as I drove away from the airport there was a sign that said “did you remember to close your flight plan?” and I always chuckled for some reason😂

I'm going to work you out a-bit! I want to see spins practice: both right and left spins! I want to see a too high approach into a slide slip to landing. I want to see a crosswind landing. I want to see a landing misalignment from being lined up in the grass next to the runway as you near the threshold to then use rudder to flat turn back to a centerline landing. I want to hear the stall warning before touchdown (full flare landing), Please practice this at altitude 1st: be safe!!! Whew all of that in one video should work you out (and increase your views)! lol Cheers; Robert

I love all those ideas! Sadly my airplane isn’t rated for aerobatics so spins are out, but the high approach, side slips, crosswind landings, and a full flare landing I can do! As for the misalignment, I did a short on that a while ago and got a ton of heat for it😂 Thanks for all the great ideas, I appreciate it!!!
