I swear Jacob's godlike normal RNG and Cybertron's usual hellish RNG came together for a split second and created some kind of singularity of fortune that wound up reversing their fates.

Actually, Normal type is a really good type for pawns. In normal Pokemon, resistances are important to allow switch-in and resisting STAB attacks, which makes Normal a bad type defensively due to its only resistance being Ghost. But with these Chess rules, there's more importance in not having weaknesses since these are what opens up combos into potential instant-losses. So Normal type with its only weakness being Fighting is actually really good to prevent these combos from happening.

"My horse is it a rook" from SmallAnt absolutely killed me, because he first didn't even call it by the right name by calling it the horse(understandable), but then tried to correct himself by calling it the rook which made him even more wrong 🤣

We have to applaud Vernias being in this tournament.

The editing to remove the more nuianced rules until they became crucial for specific games was top notch. Flowed so well as a result!

moral of the story: when asked, "do you know how to play chess" 9/10 pokemon youtubers respond, "what is a chess?"

If you guys were to include all 18 types on the Chess board, my best suggestion is give only the Queen and King the option to be Dual Typed, providing the King better defense while exerting more offensive pressure from the Queens

hey! the site could use some patching. as you noticed during the tournament, the low health music and promotion overlay are broken but there's also a bug with moving a piece multiple times where if you choose not to, the game can start taking the other player's time while it's still your turn, softlocking the game. customizable time control would be a nice quality of life addition and imo a king taking another king with a not very effective matchup should result in a draw.

I love how almost everyone was like “they are being so smart” only to jump cut to them saying something like “I don’t know what I’m doing.” Comedy gold.

RNG aside, the amount of strategy possible simply from assigning different types to pieces is insane. Imagine trying to prepare actual chess openings but you also need to account for what type all of your opponent's pawns are.

Ya know, Normal and Bug are actually not garbage. Normal has no super effective type matchups sure, but it also is only weak to Fighting. And Bug wins 3 type matchups with 3 type losses. Which is WAY better than Grass's 3 type wins and 5 type losses.

Im over here enjoying that when you set a peice to a certain type, it seems there are predetermined pokemon that fit it best. The rook pokemon I saw were spectreir, glastreir, galarian rapidash, mudsdale, terakion, zebstrika, kingdra, tauros, corviknight, ageslash, sirfetched, and absol. clearly choosing the knight/ horses of the type. Love it.

It'll be interesting if abilities could be given to the different types, *Normal* - Run Away: This piece can move 1~2 spaces backwards instead to it's normal movement. You cannot capture a piece with this movement. *Fire* - Flame Body: The piece that captures this piece has a 20% to become burned. A burned piece is captured at the end of the opponent's third turn after the piece was captured. *Water* - Drizzle: Adjacent enemy pieces do not get an extra move after capturing a piece that was super effective or a critical hit. *Grass* - Harvest: If this piece is captured and the square this piece started on is unoccupied, when a pawn is promoted you may regain this piece and put it in it's starting square. *Electric* - Static: The piece that captures this piece has a 20% to become paralyzed. A paralyzed piece can only move and capture pieces as if it were a pawn. *Bug* - Compound Eye: This piece cannot miss it's attacks. Has a 15% chance of getting a Critical Hit. *Fighting* - Defiant: This piece cannot be captured by a piece it resist. *Flying* - Aerilate: This piece may move through friendly pieces. It cannot capture pieces the turn it passes through a friendly piece. *Poison* - Poison Touch: The piece that captures this piece has a 20% to become poisoned. A poisoned piece has a 35% of being captured at the end of each of it's owner's turns. *Ground* - Lightning Rod: Adjacent pieces cannot be captured by Electric pieces. *Rock* - Sturdy: Once per game, if this piece would be captured it isn't. *Psychic* - Telepathy: When this piece captures a piece by a Super Effective or Critical Hit, you may move another piece for the additional move instead. *Ice* - Refrigerate: The piece that captures this piece has a 20% of becoming frozen. A frozen piece cannot move and cannot be captured. It unfreezes at the start of the opponent's fourth turn after being frozen. *Dragon* - Pressure: A critical hit will never occur when capturing this piece. *Ghost* - Cursed Body: If this piece is affected by a status condition, adjacent enemy pieces have a 20% of gaining the same status condition at the end of each turn. *Dark* - Intimidate: Adjacent enemy pieces cannot capture this pieces unless they are super effective against this piece. *Steel* - Heavy Metal: This piece is unaffected by status conditions. *Fairy* - Flower Veil: At the end of the turn remove status conditions from adjacent friendly pieces.

I really think that the whole super effective move again thing should be limited to just a max of one free per turn, as it just snowballs way too easily as current. It would also make the queens less busted and make you have to think more about how deep you want to go in with a piece.

16:30 No, why take the rook and promote, risking a miss... when he could simply have the move step forward one step, promote, and even if rook takes it, the bishop punished (promoted pawn is a bait). And then if it's promoted into a queen or rook, black will lose if it moves above the fighting bishop, since the rook can just take it and then the king (super-effective). That way black king must move up (up+right is still seen by bishop). But moving up there is still going to lose since if it promoted to a queen (rook can't do this) it will simply take the fighting bishop and then king, like in that prior mentioned case.

When you made your first video on this; I thought the idea was genius. And now I've actually got to play it for myself? I'm hooked! This game is actually fantastic! Unless I'm facing a pro; I've always found regular chess a bit too easy to win against the levels of opponents I face, and there's not much challenge in doing that, but now there's so much more to consider upon each move, and with the added RNG or crits and misses being factors to consider; this game is seriously just so much fun!
