I found a crazy good and unexpected Chinook Salmon spot while checking out 3 runs and exploring the waters of the upper Vedder and Chilliwack River. This was my experience, as struggling as it was. I think next time I might just bring a Center Pin, or spend the time finding the frog water for fly fishing that I was searching for. Still, I found some beautiful water and saw some fish and even recruited a buddy to my Chinook spot and he hooked up on a monster right away. Also netted a big beautiful fish for someone who snagged. Enjoy my morning of exploration and failure!

all the water your walking away from is all decent water spey/swung fly guys do great in. you won't be snagging you'll be mid river or just above the fish if dial right. you don't need a new rod just a single hand skagit line setup like a opst commando head or w/e company you like. The skagit head will give you power to fish tungsten tips ( T material) and weighted flies with ease . a skagit system needs 3 components. a running/shooting line, a skagit head and tip, though companies are now making things easier . a classical line with a simple sinking leader ( polyleader) won't get down in such flows and your catch rates will be suffer. there's a TON of difference in a flimsy 6 inches poly leader and 6 inches tungsten tip. the sink rates of tungsten tips blow the leaders away

The struggle is real, dude. Those fish on the Vedder are so heavily pressured, and they get super spooky in clear water conditions like you had. Add hundreds of people who are camped out on the best spots. Makes it really tough for fly fishing.

I'm not sure I've seen a cleaner King that the fish you netted. Great to see so many fish in the system, keep at it. Definitely consider running an egg under and indicator. You don't have to center pin to float an egg. Cough Mono-rig, cough!

There are so many rivers with frog water in lower mainland with little to no people fishing them and i think they are ideal for fly fishing.

Tragic that that the first frog water spot is gone. The second spot can be an almost stagnant pool during low water. That Chinook run looked tasty, might be doable with higher sink T material or as you said Centrepinning.

Always wanted to Fly fish for salmon. However I can't even get into much salmon on the vedder. 160 hrs of fishing and 4 fish is all I have to show for this season. Way too much pressure, too many people. There needs to be a annual limit of 10 hatchery coho in region 2 of bc.

saw someone catching coho on fly late Sept this year, in the canal, at the tailout of the very last run above highway 1 bridge (you can park on the highbank), wide open water nobody was fishing…fish don’t hold their but could be productive during the right tides as they come into the system

My set up for my CP: 40lbs braided line, float 25gr, 1" weight (pencil stick large size), 2-3ft leader (15lbs maxima mono), soft beads molted pink 12mm and jig geek cycle hook #1/0.
