Hey guys... Notice the open vault 7 minutes and 20 seconds in. The original walls are still in place, and the only opening is the hole I looked through. Part of the coffin is clearly still there. My question is, What happened to the body??? You know they didn't take it out through that little hole. There are no bones inside the vault. I highly suspect animals may have gotten in there and taken them away.
I never thought of that. I bet you are right. Which makes the vandalism even more disgraceful. Poor person ending up as animal fodder. What an awful ending for that person.
I was employed as a funeral assistant, and what you see is a steel vault. I see no hinges on the box itself, and the mausoleum's front wall seems less aged than the rest. The coffin or casket may have been wood, yet no sign of it remains. I would say an exhumation and removal of the coffin and reinterred somewhere else.
If you take a flashlight put it right beside the stone it will help you read the writing on there sometimes. I would think it would have to be animals getting in there that's kind of creepy give me the heebie-jeebies. 😆
Leo and Heather - for many, many years growing up in Logan County, people said Mamie Thurman was laid to rest there after she was murdered. However, my Mamaw Brooks who knew her, said she was buried in Kentucky.
Leo I like when you read names & dates. Sometimes they are hard to read. Sometimes I watch without my glasses on. Then I have no hope of reading anything. Those open vaults were horrible. How disrespectful. Shame on the vandals that would do that. The uncared for cemeteries make me sad. Our dead deserve better than that. It's too bad the veterans aren't buried in a military cemetery then they would be cared for.
On a genealogy site, I read a number of years ago that you can spread shaving cream on a stone and squeegee it. The cream will swell up and the letters will rise. Best thing, it doesn't hurt the stone. I used it for years. It works pretty well.
A spray bottle filled with water...preferably untreated, rain water..sprayed on the headstone makes it a whole lot easier to read, specially for photos.
It was good to see PFC Miller's grave cared for. All military both active duty & veterans are special to me. My heroes wear dog tags. Like Gary Miller my son is a Marine. Marines hold a really special place in my heart. I wonder if Gary Miller possibly died of war wounds. He was so young & the war had only been over for 2 yrs. I hope he & his family members rest in peace.
Thank you for your service to the fallen, thank you for a wonderful video . I'm so glad someone thinks of a family member to keep the ground clean and big question why move the body and not the coffin?
Hey Guys, Haven’t been with you guys very long only because I hadn’t found your channel. But yeah I have now!!! I am from Richlands,VA but I use to work in KY I love the people there, all were kind to me on my missions. As for your laughter, I was gonna write you and tell you how sweet I thought it was! 💜
Thank you, Leo, for your time exploring these gravesites, that is a shame that the resting place of folks are not taken care of. Some of the vaults look like they have been vandalized.
Kohoutek is pronounced Cow who tek. Emphasize who in pronouncing the name. What an interesting cemetery. So sad that someone is not taking care of it. Is it a private cemetery or owned by a city or county? If so, they should be responsible for taking care of it. I was not far from Logan yesterday during my visit to WV. Thought about you and Heather. Great video..
It's always sad to see an abandoned cemetery, especially when it contains military graves. Let's hope someone will take on the task of restoring it to a decent standard.
Cap is in Sarah Ann, we actually should be headed there this summer, there's some issues with who owns the grave ATM. Vance is in thacker holler wv, on private property, we are working on both
A lot of cemetery's in such sad shape and all of those souls forgotten. Thanks to you and Heather for remembering as many as you can!!! subscribed, great content!! Looks as though someone stole the 2 souls from the damaged crypt. Peggy Sue Miller left 5 Children, 11 Grand Children and 9 Great Grand Children.
You should go to Terra Alta in Preston County West Virginia. There is an old abandoned Cemetery called Chidester Shaw behind the high school. My great great grandfather is burried there. I have been told that it's quite run down and abandoned. It would be neat to see some video from there
I keep looking for my late husband family name. Lee they were last in ky. But traveled down the Carolina's . Up here we have a cemetery month and clean it up and repairs. Thank you for sharing
For stones that you can't read, I recommend using a vegetable brush to remove dirt, moss and such. Also, sidewalk chalk will highlight the letters, making them easier to read. There's a cemetery on the hill above the Belfry middle school that has a grave of a Teamsters Union member. When I went about ten years ago, it was in terrible shape. He was a high ranking memeber of the Union too. There were above-ground crypts there as well.
HEY you Guys SUPER noticing the vet barred. Even in those abomined cemetery. THANK you. As a Vet myself I notice when some of the other you tuber that visit Cemetery. They walk right by them, and neve say a thing about the vets. Once again the time spent putting together these pages is amazing. My wife and I work many hours trying to find just my family , Not doing a very good job of it either. My Brother and I are the LAST OF the Matney Males . Many Matney around but are Lady Females Thank you. Be care full Joe plant will get you
I've heard that if you take a real good flashlight and aim the beam a certain way against the writing, then you'll be able to better read the info on the stones. Never tried it, but maybe it works.
Susie Borders. That cemetery hasn’t been taken care of for many years. I only remember going there once in the 1960’s with my mommy and Mamaw. It was beautiful. Some days we would go and not be able to drive up in there. That’s a shame for our veterans. I still actually have the receipt in my mommy’s old papers where my Poppy (great-grandfather) bought the plot. He was not buried there when he died.
I just recently discovered your u tube channel. I am from WV. I am enjoying watching your videos I've watched a few in the last 2 days. I enjoy this so much I actually shared this on fb in hopes that WV people will start to follow you. Oh n BTW I still live in WV lol
This cemetery may be in sorry 😞 shape, but I have seen worse! I think, eventually, the county may have to just, walk in, and take control of the cemetery. I am glad to see that a couple of families are trying to keep up their family plots. I agree with you about small animals making off with the body in that crypt. What kind of scavengers do you have in West Virginia, that could do something like this Great video Leo, thank you very much, and thank you Heather. 😊
Obviously with an open vault we are dealing with vampires 🧛♂️ 🙄, did you find it at night or very early morning? The Dr gave Barnabas a medicine that was helping him to stay out during the daylight hours. Yep, I think you have stumbled upon something.
@The Hillbilly Files - Legends and Locations you might not be old enough to remember Dark Shadows, that was on ABC in mid 60s/ early 70s, a soap opera about vampires, I was addicted to the shows. 😆 🤣.
I enjoy your movies! They are interesting. I've seen some where they take a flashlight and hold it to the side to be able to read the names and dates better. Just a suggestion
Its sad to see such disrepair. Im guessing after so many years as families move away pass away, theres no one left. I wish each town had a fund set in place to care for Cemetery s and to repair gravestones and rechizle names and dates of those faded away through time.
This another Great video those vaults are called false crypts we have them when I did the cemetery in Ohio in 1805 the remains are down four feet below it not in the crypts Can't wait to see what you guys do next sorry I have been away we had a house fire and I went to a burn unit in the flight for life
@@thehillbillyfiles Thank you out of the ashes here comes the phoenix all of my dogs and cats are fine I not going to be a landlord anymore we getting a ranch house
Could you carry a good flash light with you so for the ones you can't read well shine a light on the tomb stones? I also watch Sidestep Adventures, and the guy who has his videos, uses a bright (little) flash light. Your history is fascinating by the way.
IN THE COFFIN W NO BODY IN IT NO ONE COULD HAVE TAKEN OR POSSIBLY STOLEN BODY I BELIEVE IT'S THE ANIMALS OF SOME SORT DONE THT TO THT COFFIN AND THE BODY THT WAS IN IT I'D DO FURTHER RESERCHING TO FIND OUT WHO EXACTLY WAS IN THT COFFIN I WOULD
What kind of country is this, to let their fore fathers who help the people of today to build this country, to allow their graves be destroyed like this! It is unspeakable at the least to deter family from finding family to see this...fix it!
Hi Leo and Heather.....I noticed a grave with the last name of BUSKIRK.....do you know any history of that last name around where you live? Thank you Mark Buskirk
I'm just having some fun with this, I appreciate the time and effort you all put in to doing this, I grew up in Eastern Kentucky and know a little bit about it.
Is only me but I always wandered if before WW2 they called it WW1, I mean did they just call it WW and add the 1 when the second one started or was it called that always like they expected to be more WWs 🤔, if that makes sense?
I thought it was called "The Great War" until after WWII. That is when they started differentiating the wars with the I and II. However, don't hold me to it, I could be wrong. But I think I am right!! ;-)
