How I Planned to Find Her: • How I'm Going to Find ...
I went back to El Salvador (where I was born) to find my birth mother. I was adopted at 1 year old and have grown up my entire life in Massachusetts.
I went to college in Washington, DC and settled in NYC soon after. In the last year, I've become much more curious about my culture, my country of origin, and my birth mother.
After seeing the movie Lion, I realized that it was 100% possible that I could find her. I just had to put my mind to the task. I booked a trip to El Salvador and this video shows what happened...

It depends, I had a nana in Mexico that would cry and hug me and kiss me non stop everytime she saw me. She was super affectionate and emotional. My other Hispanic grandmother, is so different I've probably seen her cry maybe twice in my whole life.

Wow, what a story! To everyone judging her, she speaks Spanish and her emotions are different than how Americans react. To me she seemed excited, shy and nervous, not any other way around & I speak Spanish fluently and I can tell that she’s an uneducated person and it’s finding it hard to express herself. Let’s be kind to her and not judge her based on a video. ❤️ Sending good vibes your way! God bless you! P.S: this is a beautiful video and your heart, so kind! Thank you for showing us that there’s no time to waste, just to forgive and love no matter the past. 💕

As someone who comes from a huge Salvadoran family I can confirm your comment as true. Salvadorans don’t show much emotion, in fact I remember asking my father constantly why he was yelling at me while we had normal conversation. It’s not that they’re angry or cold hearted, and even educated people (my father attended and graduated from a university in San Salvador) have a hard time showing emotion because they’re raised on “tough love”. His pet names for me included Mona Cerota (little shit) and cabrona but I knew those were just terms of endearment. The “I love you’s” don’t come often and if they do they are followed by an offensive name but that’s what toughens us up.

I have a very similar story to yours! Except I grew up in foster care and found my mom in Tijuana, Mexico. I always wondered of her and what became of her life after she was deported when I was an infant and her disappearing in Mexico. So glad to have found her, alive today (after 20 years!). She's mentally ill and unable to have a relationship with me but I feel a relief that I am finally able to close this chapter in my life. It is truly a blessing. Some people live their whole lives wondering. You and I are lucky.

I totally agree with you, salvadorian women are so strong, my dad is Salvadoran and I have only seen him cry once. My aunts from my dads side are so emotionally strong, never have I seen them cry, I think its their upbringing. Alot of their childhood was during really hard time and now in their old age their facing the violence. They have withstood so much, I don't blame them.

This video made me cry especially seeing your brothers emotion towards finding the news of who you are. He seems like such a wonderful soul. Your mother seemed as if she wanted to cry but held it in. People judge but don't read body language very well. She seemed hurt and happy at the same time. Please try to learn Spanish, As Latinos we should not loose/forget the language that made who we are. Sal, your storytelling revealed why you often say you are blessed, grateful and fortunate. Near the end you comment about "finding out about why I was given up for adoption." My guess is that it will take awhile for you to fully understand the "why" simply because it is difficult to comprehend given the favorable life you have been truly "blessed" with. From my perspective your mother gave you a great gift - the person you are now...

Point blank? It's because they couldn't feed me. The opportunity came about and they took it. Haha, I'm pretty okay with that decision. I've always felt like I won the lottery and my parents always told me I was adopted. Unfortunately... not everyone's story is that positive.
