A couple who were given the wrong baby by a hospital in El Salvador a year ago, have finally been allowed to travel home with the correct child. Rich Cushworth - who is British - and his wife, Mercedes - were only given a birth certificate for their son Moses a few days ago. They landed back home in Dallas, Texas this week where they have been speaking exclusively to our correspondent Matthew Price.

Those doctors gaslit her. If a mom says "this isn't my baby" a doctor's FIRST reaction should be to order a dna test, not try and convince her she is wrong.
@Mariet31
@Mariet31 3 года назад
Something tells me that was not the first time it happened and they just normalized "it's not my baby." Whoever was the nurse responsible for such a stupid mistake should have her/his license revoked permanently.
@belladingdong3396
@belladingdong3396 3 года назад
@@Mariet31 Yes, but no. No matter what, the first response to a woman saying for the first time, "this isn't my baby" needs to be hospital procedure to immediately order a test. If it's a "repeat" offender, you can stop testing. But a new mom? Test for her sake. In america, that's just another excuse to charge more money anyway. I agree though that the nurse and doctor who refused to order a DNA test need to have their licenses suspended.
@belladingdong3396
@belladingdong3396 3 года назад
@@Mariet31I hear you, but I'm sorry that's still no excuse. The mentality of the hippocratic oath should lead to the logic of first validating any medical concern by ordering the appropriate tests and THEN determining if that concern was legitimate or not, depending on the results of the test, not the opposite way around. That is lazy medical care, that is jaded medical care, and that is negligent medical care.

@@belladingdong3396 yes! Even when I was working in smaller facilities, we had to validate that something wasn’t right or that the patient wasn’t just having some type of episode. They put a security braclets on baby that matches the mom's immediately after birth. If the baby even comes within 10 feet or so of the exit doors an alarm goes off and lock down initiated. They dont mess around anymore. Its very hard for babys to be switched at birth now. Not all hospitals have this security but most do

I can't believe until the solicitor said the other baby has to go back to his mother!! that this lady believed she was keeping both of these babies.this was a couple of hours before she had to hand over the baby to his mother!! and this lady was willing to keep both babies!! ma wee chickadee WOW!!! Are you really that judgmental and lacking in compassion??? The woman was on an emotional rollercoaster. She had loved a child as her own unconditionally for several months. Even nursed that child. Then her real child is found. Sounds like she simply needed some time to adjust to that reality before having to face the reality that finding her own child meant losing the child that had been in her care. It wasn’t a matter of her “selfishly” desiring to keep both children. Seems like she simply hadn’t had time to absorb the fact that as she gained one child she was about to lose another. Have some compassion! After what she went through, I think she earned the benefit of a doubt.

@@sinatra7407 it depends on the situation, if it’s a preemie baby they probably have to be rushed to NICU, if they’re not they could die. Or it could be to prioritise the mother. She said she had a C-section, which is pretty hard going in itself, you need to be stitched up and cared for. But you also don’t know why she had a C-section there could have been complications that meant she needed extra care. Birth can be pretty messy and doctors/nurses are often just doing what they can. Absolutely! I am a midwife and in my previous job we checked the baby's ID band and cot card against the mother's wristband before baby left mother's side, checked the baby's ID against the cot card before leaving the nursery, and checked baby's ID against mother's wristband when baby is returned to mother. We did this EVERY TIME baby left mother's side. Babies had 2 types of ID one of which was a plain number which mother read and signed a form for on admission while she had all her wits about her. ALL BABIES had an ID band on all limbs! This story is insane!

I completely agree. When my grandmother was giving birth, she told the doctor something was seriously wrong. He kept dismissing her, and she kept telling him something was wrong. It turned out that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck and it choked him to death. She grieved for that baby her entire life. I think doctors just get jaded and stop listening to their patients after a few years.

+john 321 They do that to let the mother recuperate from just giving birth and they have to clean the baby and check to be sure nothing is wrong with the baby. But especially some women can be in labor for a long time then the energy it takes to push the baby out is very exhausting even more so if they had to have a C-section cause they are given medications for the pain and such. The nurses were just extremely negligent , they are supposed to put a band on the babies ankle with the room and mothers name. I dunno about all hospitals or what they do but the hospital I was at this was their standard protocol. They even put a security monitor on the babies ankle and if the child is taken within so many feet an alarm will go off.

In a lot of german hospitals you can decide, whether to give your child to the nursery or keep it in your room. But usually they immediately put a name tag on the baby (little bracelet or something like this). So maybe the nurses at this hospital were really stressed this day.
@krissymissy1888
@krissymissy1888 7 лет назад
+Sarah R. That's true but they ALWAYS take the baby to the nursery at first so they can fully exam the baby and clean the amniotic fluid off the baby check for jaundice, things like that. They give your child a small check-up in the room with you and if he/she is breathing fine and not in a life or death situation they let you hold your child first and take some pictures before taking him/her to the nursery. But after they bring the baby back to the room it's up to you if you want to send the baby back, but if they have to put you on pain meds and no one is with you to help when needed, they take the baby to the nursery right after they give the meds to you just in case the meds make you drowsy .

That was a total negligence of the staff's part, they should pay the damage that they brought to the family. The saddest part of this is giving up the baby that she took care for 3 months and I understand where she's coming from. Lesson learned is you should trust your motherly instinct because mom knows best.

you'd be surprised how common mixups like these are. happened to me with my parents. thankfully my dad discovered it before they took me home. we were born the same day, in the same delivery room, and were given the same first name. the nurse didn't even bother to double-check our last names on our wristbands to ensure each baby was with the right parents, it was just, "here you go".

My grandmother had this happen to her also - my mother became ill after birth - she was several months old at the time and ended up in a country hospital , back in 1940, she was there for a week or two and when they picked her up Gran said ‘this is not my baby’, was told ‘yes, yes, this is, she’s grown and changed some while here’, they started to head home - several hours away but Gran said she knew it wasn’t her ‘Maxi’, she could bring herself to even like this baby. So they went back - thankfully the other family had arrived and were stating the same to the staff so it was sorted quickly. What if mother’s instinct wasn’t so strong?
