Translating will not “do the job” .. things are not directly translated whatsoever and different figures of speech are used and lots of things are omitted and/or added. It’s vastly different for each language.

And you're talking about the language from the same family as English which still has definitive forms. Just imagine languages with no infinity form of verbs or no relative pronouns like "you" and "I".

Chinese and related languages don't have articles so you can't just translate the list into your native language. Romance languages don't have a discrete word for the English future modal "will" etc.

I remember the disappointment and chagrin when everyone laughed as he explained that that wasn't quite all there was to learning German.

in some languages you have a bunch of different words for "the". in german for example we commonly use "der/die/das; den/dem/der; zum" for all ways to say "the" I was able to think of rn (the [noun]; on/under/etc. the; what the)

@@AramatiPaz yeah, those are the main ones. We have got der, die, das, dem, des, den. It's just different from which sentence you use them in. If it's your native language it's really easy, but I've never met someone who learned German and was able to use our "the" versions correctly

"its kinda crazy how limited our vocabulary is" I wouldnt say limited, i know theres a few special cases but i figure most people have a pretty big vocabulary but most words in the dictionary arent in most ways required for a general conversation. Most people dont need to tap into theIr mental dictionary unless its related to work or some kind of specific interest.

Word "the" does not exist in many languages. It does not exist in Polish. The same with "a".

In Turkish too. If in this video, "be" means also "am/is/are" we don't have that too.

Olmak right? In English, "be" is the infinitive of those, yes. In Turkish that may not be the case due to the fact that you agglutinate

@@kennyf3538 yes, you can translate it like that. Affixes do the job for us. Even we use some words as an affix. Like O (he/she/it) + ile(with or and) = onunla. You can make a word that when you try to translate English it appears to be 17 words. :D

In romanian "the" dosen't exist. We just change the word: mâncare (food), mâncarea (the food).

@@madonebo9249 Swedish, instead of using 'the' we change the ending of the word. Example English: cat - the cat house - the house Swedish: katt - katten hus - huset What the ending is depends on what word it is and if it's singular or plural just like in german who have multiple words for 'the' (Der, die, das, dem etc).

"The" probably took 1st because english uses it a fair bit, but mostly because decent number of languages require articles in front of all objects or things and if the context of the sentence doesn't need a specific article, they use their equivalent of "the"

In my language we hardly use "the", not in the english way atleast. We add an ending to the noun instead. Like "the cat" would be "caten" (katt-katten)
