I Found The Problem With The Neumann TLM 103, this is one of the most loved and hated microphones for some reason.
But today I finally figured it out, so I hope you stick around till the end as I run this mic through a sibilance test to get to the bottom of all the hate this mic gets.
And for this test I will put the Neumann TLM 103 up against its big brother, the Neumann U87.

Thank you! Sibilance will always be an issue no matter the mic but the TLM103 does sound harsher, as you say that makes sense since it boosts those frequencies where the volume from sibilance usually resides. I don't feel it makes the 103 a bad mic, it is a great mic but it is the area that makes production a bit of a pain. Shame that the letter S is in so many words haha

WOW! I never see anyone with the Equator Audio D5's! Such good sounding speakers despite their noise floor. It's a shame but I think they've gone out of business. I hope I get a chance to hear their larger Q series one day.

Hey thanks for noticing that Dieselphiend! Yes the D5’s are so so good, but mine are old now, so I moved them out and got some Yamaha hs5’s since they sound really close and are much easier to get. So my D5’s are back up

Fun fact: The TLM 103 and TLM 102 lack balanced outputs. Their audio circuitry connects pin 3 to ground through a capacitor, grounding it for audio, and unbalanced audio is sent out from pin 2. I would expect that from a $20 Radio Shack mic, but not from a Neumann. I have a pair of $50 each Chinese Schoeps knockoffs that are transformerless, but have true balanced outputs. So if they can do it, why can't Neumann?

Hi, and I get what you are saying, but that is a job for the techs at Neumann to answer. There could many issues, but at the end of the day, no matter what I use to make music, the audience does not care. All they care about is, if the like the song or not.

In all honesty, I cannot say from where I stand, but my best guess would be a faulty XLR cable (where the wires got mixed up and soldered to the wrong pins) that that maybe canceling your signal somewhere in your vocal chain.

Yes it will do you so well. BTW whats going on with your contents buddy? strap 2 go-pros in your truck (one on you and one facing the road, and just narrate your day! You could get a Zoom H4 recorder to capture your audio, you could make some great content, you have the personality for it!

It’s not a good mic I’ve had one for 6+ years and it’s just so crisp but in the wrong way not good for male vocals no matter how much I mix my vocals sound like fryed chicken lol I am in a untreated room x2 the bad things. It’s kinda depressing.

Hey sorry to hear about your issues, I guess it is not the perfect mic for your situation with an untreated room and all, but if your room was treated in some way, do you think you would have better results?

turns out it was the cheap imitation cahotica ball and cheap scarlett preamp, i took off the cheap filter off and plugged into the uad apollow twin and its good. @@TieDyeKitty

Because I used a camera mic and I do not do any sort of processing. And also I pushed the gain on the TLM and U87 for the sibilance to stand out on both mics as a comparison. Now anyone can listen and judge for themselves.

Hey David, yes the de esser does help, but it also takes away a little every time, even tho most listeners never notice, you will eventually hear it, and it will piss you off first. lol Its just a tool we have to use.
