Behold the rarest BMW/Alpina Touring, 1 of 43 produced Alpina B10 V8S from the legendary 5-series E39 lineup. This neglected gem has been off the road since 2016 and is located in Suonenjoki, Finland. Instead of doing the usual and shipping the car, I optimistically flew in with a smile and some parts to service it, and drive it back to Germany 2500 kilometers.

Roads like these in Finland are the reason why Finnish people are good at rally.
@raisioracing9259

It's kind of embarrassing when Finns imagine that we somehow have exceptionally bad roads. They are not so good in the countryside in other countries either. It's worth driving somewhere other than main roads, and your eyes will open. For example, when driving on smaller roads in our neighbor Sweden, I can say that the road network is in exactly the same condition as in Finland.

They have perfect new autobans. Don't write if you never been there. Crack on the windsheald and scraches on the bonet has the place because fins don't use sand with salt on the roads. They use fine crashed rocks in place of salt and sand mixture.

The cameramen made a big difference in a good way. It feels like you are a movie star. It is more interactive, faster-paced, and more entertaining because of the drone overhead/profile shots and also the view of the scenery. I hope you continue with this format. Second, I am biased toward green because Alpina Blue is all too common for the B10, a great majority is in Alpina blue. Have a look at this lovely colour Azores Green LX6S, it will be perfect with E39. The gearbox tends to overheat at high speeds because it uses a liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger with the engine coolant as the cooling medium. As you know, the M62TU uses a 105C thermostat and it actually goes >110C at spirited driving. That means the ATF is well above its ideal temperature and hence the limp mode. What you can do is change to a lower temperature thermostat (93-95C). What I did is, I removed the liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger and replaced it with the conventional liquid-to-air cooling device from an E39 530. All the older E39s use an air-cooled system that is placed directly in front of the coolant radiator. My experience has been great, the gearbox is cooler and performed so much better afterwards - no limp mode ever since. But if you insist on changing the gearbox, please opt for the ZF8HP, it will be so cool to see how a modern transmission will enhance a 21-year-old car. To turn an Alpina into a manual is sacrilegious, it was always meant to be a gentleman's version of M5. I have three suggestions for you that will improve the car a bit. I did this for my B10 and I vouch that it works. 1. Change the throttle body (original is 78mm) with N62 throttle body 13547535308 which is 84mm, and you should optimise the plastic flange by boring it to 84-85mm as well. It is plug-and-play, you just have to remove one wire for the cable harness connector. The car will feel more responsive and feel more powerful. 2. Buy a progressive limited slip differential from www.racingdiffs.com. This will improve the grip of your rear wheels. 3. The CCV system is shit and poorly designed. When you open the air intake manifold, you will see a thick film of oil. To make it better, delete the factory CCV system and use an external oil catch can. This will filter oil and engine gas blow-by, ensuring your recirculated air into the air intake manifold is super clean. You can buy the CCV blank plate via srs-concept.com/product/m60-m62-ccv-delete-kit/#:~:text=But%20you%20can't%20delete,route%20the%20engine%20vacuum%20hose. Good luck and all the best on this project.

While the 6 speed is always nice, the modern 8 speed is so much more interesting of a topic. It offers a new technical challenge to fit correctly, keep the OEM look and functionality, and to be honest, the modern automatics with a lot of gears offer a completely different driving experience. You're ALWAYS in the powerband, the acceleration doesn't drop, and the cruising rpm is very comfy. Perfect for a high torque cruiser like the Alpina. And the 6 speed is a 6 speed. Same old, reliable, engaging, fun. But i think it could take away from the grand touring feel and push it into the sporty direction.

Transsmision: worth trying the ZF 8HP, - in my opinion. With the manual, the result is known and guaranteed, agreed. But that 8-speed autobox can be both smooth and aggressive - depending on what you ask of it. On the other hand the proper version needs to be chosen, given that the ratios vary between torque variants.

This video made me emotional. Being a Latvian who has moved to Spain and hasn't seen my family for months and more importantly, seeing you drive my home roads, literally passing my home in Vecumnieki right before the Lithuanian border, made me shed a tear. Of joy of course. It was really nice to see Latvia from another perspective and also, such kind words. Thank you for that but I will be honest and defend brothers from Lithuania because I 100% know they have better roads than in Latvia. We have only a few good roads mainly around Riga that connect Tallinn and Vilnius but the majority of roads aren't in good shape. It's getting better but still, far, far from the quality of Lithuanian, Estonian, and Polish roads.

I like the way you have been doing video, though I’m sure it reduces your workload to have someone else do the filming. Was cool to watch you blast through the bit of maintenance you did before hitting the road. I really think the new way of filming was a real value add for this episode. Can’t wait to see how this project develops.

Big shoutout to Ryan for filming this whole trip, the camera work was excellent and really lifted this episode! As for the car I would be interested to see the ZF 8 HP happen and I would also change the colour. Anything other than white/black/grey would be good. Red or green could be spectacular too. Thanks for the great video, love these trips 👍

Sreten, again, another fantastic episode. You make me want to quit my job, find a dojo and start repairing old BMWs. Looking forward to the updates on this latest project. BTW, the Alpina Blue with the stripes is a great colour change option with the cinnamon interior would be great to see. Watching with interest ...

I fully support switching to cinnamon or caramel it would look great in combination with sapphire metallic or Alpina blue! P.s.Loved the different format and I'll never get sick of seeing E39's on the channel!

I have this combo on my e60 aswell, cinnamon leather with carbon black (which is blue in the sun) it really sticks out from the normal e60s, and this combo would suit a e39 really well, would also love to see it, cinnamon leather with alpine blue😃

What a powerful, visually emotional and cool video. The Finn is grinning in the background in his own garage and the cameraman takes the best shots on the way.... and the suitcase holds up to the garage. My dream was always a W124 280 estate, I already had one. But I'm going to buy an E39 and become one of your customers. Your accuracy in your work, your eye for the essentials and the gift of not taking yourself too seriously is simply an A. Many, many thanks for this video!!!

I personally wasn't as much of a fan of the cameraman filming as other viewers have expressed, I am more used to seeing you use tripods and filming on your own. It feels more... natural to me that way? More humble I guess, as I could not afford any of these cars or the work you do on this channel haha. Watching when you've filmed it all yourself makes it feel more relatable if that makes any sense. The editing however is very good and well paced and always has been, I have no issues with that. Regardless of what direction you take, I respect and admire the work you do for these future classic cars. Keep it up👍

Wasn't aware there were so few made. A friend had one, and I drove it once. What I remember is the torque, it was pulling like a train. I had an Audi RS2 at the time, and the two cars couldn't felt more diferent. Tourq vs turbo lag.😅

That BMW is phenomenal my friend and so was the drive. The first driving portion kind of reminded me of the back roads of Virginia, and I could almost imagine the drive was awesome. That incredible engine screaming a nice tune, the speed, and the endless road in front of you makes for an incredible vacation. I could only dream of heading to Europe, but I am stuck here in the states. Oh well.... P.S. Compared to American Ferries, European ones are light years ahead of ours.

Amazing video and journey, loved every second of it. This thing would look amazing in blue and I'd pick the ZF 8-speed personally. The M5 is for proper driving, this is a cruising machine with mountains of torque and suits an auto best, but that's just my opinion :D

Be very very wary about the surface rust around the floor panel plugs. The actual rust is invisible from the outside and is spreading very fast under the permanently-wet floor carpet! Ask me how I know. 🙂
