It's not a crime for the attraction - as a gross and discomforting thought as it is. If someone who is a MAP doesn't hurt any minors and doesn't act on it and gets help then I don't see a reason for anything other than sympathy for them. It's once they target minors and hurt anyone that they lose every bit of respect.

Simply having a paraphilia doesn't mean you're going to act on those attractions, nor does it indicate that you've acted on them in the past. If we encounter those kinds of people, they should get them help, not discard them like rotting garbage because of an attraction that they don't even act on.

I’m a minor, and have been a target of an online predator. I was 12 and didn’t understand what was going on, but I am far away from them now and safe but let me tell you: if you are a MAP and take advantage of a child you will ruin their life. There is a type of emotional damage and discomfort that words can’t explain that latches onto them. I am only one in thousands of children that have been targeted, but I send out my sympathy and love to the other targets.

Other people had it much worse than me, but she flirted with a bunch of underage people knowingly. She had my discord and would ask me for selfies a lot. Luckily I hadn't responded because I was busy, but people started speaking up, and she got banned. i think she deleted her account too. Even just experiencing it, knowing I could've been one of her next targets, someone I thought I could trust, it just has really messed me up. I don't know how someone could purposely try to ruin someone's life like that
Also as someone who was a target of a person in my life being predatory towards me as a child I completely agree. It fucks you up for life and as much as these "maps" deserve therapy kids deserve to feel safe and not be at risk from predators who are empowered through the Internet.
I think one of the saddest moments I've ever had was having to tell a 13 year old that they weren't responsible. They were too afraid to tell anyone else. It seriously shook them. I can't understate how damaging this can be. I really hope that kid can get better.

I feel sory for your experience, but minor attraction can't be controled. There are tons of people (trust me, atraction to minors a lot more common than you think) that suffer from even thoughts about that. And then there are bunch of people that think "well if I can't control my thoughts then I shouldn't control my actions!". Do not shame people for their thoughts, but for their actions.

Thank you for your sensitive approach to this topic. My uncle is a RU-vidr who basically started the ‘paedophile does not mean child molester’ movement and he was taken WAY out of context. The goal of the movement was allowing paedophiles to speak with therapists openly about their issues and to discuss coping mechanisms that won’t harm children (are child shaped sex dolls okay or a gateway? Child porn is ALWAYS harmful, so should we be animating child porn?) because people refuse to have these conversations and shut them down, leading to paedophiles ‘snapping’ and just molesting children because they don’t care anymore and want to just fully give up and do the worst thing they could do. One of my uncle’s friends killed himself after several years of isolating himself in his house and nobody could understand why he wouldn’t go outside, but it was discovered in his suicide note that he was a paedophile and didn’t want to harm any children or feel the way he did and couldn’t take the guilt or the thought of looking at someone’s child and being attracted to them-as he had a lot of thoughts about how the child and parents would feel if they knew and was disgusted by himself. NOTHING my uncle said was intended to imply that it’s at all okay or should be glorified, but he wanted to start open conversations about how to prevent pedophiles from ending up in a place where they’re entirely in charge of managing their own disorder in secret-which puts them in a position to also molest children or engage in child pornography without anyone knowing there’s a risk of them doing that because they’ve never told a therapist or professional about their issue. The point was to open up a real conversation about what pedophilia is and to prevent offences against children by offering help to pedophiles, without people automatically saying ‘if someone tells you they’re a pedophile they deserve to die and I hate them’-NOT to allow pedophiles to feel like it’s okay to feel the way they do or something they can’t help. Your empathy at 5:35 was refreshing and we need to start thinking about coping mechanisms and prevention, not just throwing around claims like ‘kill them all’ which make pedophiles think they have to hide their attraction and therefore any actions they may eventually take without help.

I Don’t Know Understanding others gets easier when you realize why they think the reason they do. Reasons are most often due to past experiences, (for serious unusual behaviour it could be childhood trauma.) and almost never purely because of facts.

A long time ago I wandered into NOMAP tumblr, and found a positivity blog. This one blog was more of a support group to keep MAPs non offending. Not positivity in the sense of "be proud of yourself" but more like "keep your head up, don't offend, make sure you get mental health treatment, if you offend you aren't welcome." Which is what the community SHOULD be. I also read an article a while back about people coming out as Pedophiles and the quest for mental health treatment. It was really moving.

When I think back now, although tbh he wasn't that different to me in mental age, I was too young to be involved with what was basically an adult. Nowadays I'm married to a guy with the same age gap of four years, but because I'm an adult now (im 27 he's 31) we are the same level of maturity, at the same stage of life and the age gap seems tiny and unnoticeable. I really think when you're a teenager you change so much so quickly that a gap of even two years can seem giant.

From what I understand the term MAP was actually created by medical professionals trying to destigmatize the treatment of such instincts. I do think it is important to point out and encourage people to seek treatment for such to prevent them from hurting children. Anyone who hurts a child deserves to be in jail for life, but if we could stop things before things get to that point it would help so many more children to begin with. Putting someone in jail after the trauma doesn't undo it, preventing it through therapy for "MAPs" with monitoring from professionals who could alert the authorities or take other measures to prevent such people from being a danger to others might.

When it comes to the part where you act on your emotions, for a gay person it's absolutely okay. For a pedophile it's not. Biologically, it might not be so different, I have no idea how brain chemistry evolution works, but non-straights are totally normal people while pedophiles are in need of therapy (and I insist on that). I think this wasn't stressed enough: Consent and harm. Children, dead bodies, and animals cannot give consent. And this typically leads to mental and physical harm to the target and/or those around them. This is one of the ways it is vastly different from a sexual orientation.
According to the current edition of the DSM, paedophilia is classified as a mental disorder. Not a sexuality or fetish (fetishistic disorder is usually seen as a separate disorder). There are environmental causes, and genetic/physiological causes. If you have an attraction to minors but abstain from the desire, live a normal life, and engage appropriately, then you most likely do not qualify for the diagnosis. These people on tumblr definitely qualify.

I have something called Somnophila- this being said *I will only act upon it with prior consent from my partner* I set up boundaries and respect if they’re not okay with it and will never ever force them to try it. People who have weird or abnormal fetishes but push them on their partners because “they can’t help what turns them on” are disgusting.
From someone who has struggled with this kind of stuff in the past, having something so disgusting and out of your control is isolating and depressing. Especially when you feel like its too embarrassing to get help. I don't feel like there should be a community for these things because they are all extremely anti recovery, but if its a safe space discussing intrusive thoughts and getting support it is not a bad thing. To anyone struggling with this, there is help, you can get better.
I remember seeing a segment on the news about a man who lives a super normal live, as a MAP. He has kids and a wife he loves, he just happened to also be a MAP. So he told the police on himself, told his family, and his neighborhood. He explained he did it because he never intended to act on it, because he knows it was wrong, and wanted to run it by everyone in case those parents didnt want their kids around him and he said he'd understand. But he never acted on it, so the parents of the kids were mostly okay with them being around him unless they'd be alone with him so he did just that, made sure they'd never be alone with him, as the only reason they'd be over would be to have play dates with his kids, so there really wouldn't ever be a chance for the kids to be alone one on one with him anyways. The entire neighborhood was pretty much okay with him because he made the precautions to make sure the kids felt safe. He was investigated when he told the police on himself and no CP was found, nothing. Dude was clean. He said he knew it was wrong to feel this way, and refused to ever look at CP because he felt it might fuel his desire. That is the only MAP ive ever looked at and thought "poor guy" because i know he couldn't help it and he at least went the extra mile to put the kid's safety before his desires. I don't really feel sympathy for them, but that one guy was doing the right thing. The difference is he knew it was wrong, and did everything he could to prevent it. Last time i saw him in another article, dude is still going strong. I don't think they deserve sympathy, but every now and then stuff like that pops up and it really makes you think. Pedophiles are still bad tho dont get me wrong 100% dont support them i just thought the dude from the article was worth mentioning

This sounds super negative but, at some point we need to stop trying to make ourselves feel better about our flaws and actually try to fix them. Take me for example, I often hate myself for my inability to finish anything I start and my weight. I used to just be like everyone on Tumblr and was all "body positivity" and "love yourself for who you are" but the reality is, that was just me once again trying to be comfortable in my bad habits. I don't love myself, but I do like myself enough to want to be better. My weight is unhealthy, and so is my work ethic, I need to change, I CAN change, and so can everyone else. Self care 100% includes bettering yourself especially if that means seeking psychological help
I'm not sure either but the fact is attractions like those are unnatural and unhealthy so most if not all likely stem from a trauma during the developmental stage, once you find the root cause it seems logical that you could change your way of thinking with time and therapy doesn't it? Excluding pedophiles, I don't see how any other paraphilia is different than I don't know, liking taller guys, or preferring verbally abusive women. And if it really isn't possible to change that, you should at least strive to understand why it's unhealthy and steer away, find different, less harmful outlets

people often confuse intrusive thoughts with paraphilias and it makes me so uncomfortable. i have sexual and violent intrusive thoughts that absolutely terrify me, but i would NEVER, EVER go out and say that those thoughts are valid. people with intrusive thoughts do not equate to being a p3do or violent person. they cannot control these thoughts, and they actively try to get rid of them. it is a common symptom of OCD. if you have intrusive thoughts and *do* want to act on them, then that's a whole other issue. please, PLEASE get help if you genuinely want to hurt someone.
But paraphilias [for the most part] ARE a form of intrusive thought. Paedophiles who do not act on their thoughts are typically so wracked with guilt they self-isolate. They don’t desire their attraction anymore than you desire your thoughts. They cannot help it.
I'm glad you expressed empathy for people who happen to "have this fucked-up part of themselves", who happen to have this fetish but do not want to act on it. I knew someone like this in the past, and had empathy for them, because it's a shitty hand to be dealt. They hated themselves for it, and would rather end their life than hurt another person. Pedophilia isn't the same thing as sexual orientation. Pedophilia is considered a Paraphilic Disorder that, in many cases, is treatable. A lot of the time, it's a result of some event early in life that had some sexual element to it. People have these kinds of experiences all the time, but those suffering from paraphilic disorders focus on the memory and, over time, it becomes more and more stimulating until they can't be attracted to anything other than their paraphilia. For example, with Exhibitionistic Disorder (the people who flash unsuspecting strangers in public), the event might be a friend or family member accidentally walking in on the individual while they are changing. The event itself isn't inherently sexual, but the person might remember it while in sexual situations and slowly build an association between feeling good and having someone see their genitals without expecting it. So they try to replicate it by exposing themselves in public. It's not quite the same thing, but the parallel is that they're, as you were saying, not really able to control that they're attracted to something illegal and can cause a ton of psychological damage to the victims. Though they can learn to overcome it over time and change their preferences through therapy. Homosexuality is, on the other hand, not something that just develops due to some traumatic or even mundane experience in youth. It isn't a disorder and it can't (and shouldn't) be 'treated.'

reminder that paraphilias are an actual disorder categorized on the dsm5, and belittling and attacking them (especially if they’re trying to get help) is deeply ableist! these attractions are strange and gross in almost all cases, but these people genuinely cannot control it. the only case i can say you should get rid of them on is acting on their desire!! these people need help, not aggression! x
There's a difference between fetishes/kinks and paraphilias. Sexual behaviors are generally categorized as paraphilias when they become obsessive in nature or harmful to those involved. (Please note, this is all based on my own understanding.) So, for example, if someone had an innocuous kink like getting turned on by sneezes, that kink becomes a paraphilia when the person can either no longer control their sexual desires when someone sneezes--whether the sneezing person be someone they're sexually involved with or not--or when they physically cannot achieve sexual satisfaction without its involvement. Similarly, if someone was a dom and into BDSM, that wouldn't necessarily be a paraphilia, but if it gets to the point where they have to force their domination onto unwilling participants to achieve climax, then it would be a paraphilia. Mind you, many paraphilias do not have laws put in place against them and they are not necessarily bad, but when a sexual behavior is attributed as a paraphilic disorder, it's because it causes extreme discomfort in the life of those afflicted by it, very often making it difficult to maintain healthy relationships, be they sexual or not. Pedophilia would be a paraphilia, not a fetish, because we have psychological evidence showcasing that relationships between sexually immature children and sexually mature adults are detrimental to the child in question and their development (this applies physically and mentally--and no, this does not give leeway for people to engage with "mentally mature children"). Additionally, the younger the child in question, the greater the likelihood for both physical and mental damage. There is no way for it to be healthy, therein it's a paraphilia and not a fetish or kink.

I am a compulsive liar. It’s a disorder, it’s not my fault I have it, and it doesn’t make me a bad person. However, it can cause a lot of problems, and it can hurt people. So, I’m working to manage it and (hopefully) get rid of it eventually. It doesn’t matter that it’s not my fault and I’m not going to try and say that it’s “just how I am”, it can hurt people so I’m going to change it. That’s what those people should be trying to do. It sucks, yes, but it’s your responsibility to get your shit together and to try to be a good person.

There's a slightly lesser known tumblr subculture I'm wondering if you'd look on called tradfems. It stands for traditional femininity, and they are women who promote traditional gender roles. At first scrolling trough their blogs, they seem kinda wholesome and innocent, but after looking for a while you'll find that they are very homophobic and many of them think that no women should work or vote, women shouldn't be educated, and just generally hold incredibly misogynistic views. Last year I dated a dude who was a necrophiliac. I didn’t know he was one and I just thought he was joking when he talked about killing me and fucking my dead body because he had a dark sense of humor and I liked that. 2 months later he started getting creepier and talking about fucking dead girls ALL THE TIME, I finally broke up with him and I’m glad I did and wish I would’ve realized how messed up he was before I dated him.
I hope the guy gets some therapy. I'd hate to see his desires actualized. And hey, with the advent of sex robots, maybe that will be close enough to what he wants that he can both obtain the sexual gratification he wants and not hurt anyone.
