This guy is 17 years old? He's honestly way more informed and well-versed than most other people in his age range when it comes to car knowledge. Good on him, I hope his Xterra lasts a life time :)
Just hit 305k miles. Original owner w/original engine and tranny. Not babied either. I off-road almost every weekend in CO and the X has lived in PA, TX and CO since I bought in in 2006. Just an amazing rig. Thanks for giving her some love in the spot light!
My gen 1 had 330 when I turned it over to my nephew . It got me up and down the ALCAN highway 3 times and lived in Alaska 5 years while I was stationed at wainwright .
2006 Off Road here. Xterras are kinda like the best kept secret, which has helped keep prices down. So capable and under appreciated. Love love love mine.
they're not really under appreciated they're simply non existent. i looked for two months back in fall of 2017 and could not find a single manual xterra or v6 4wd frontier in any condition. I really wanted an xterra but ended up spending a lot more on a 2015 taco.
Hopefully that means that Nissan will bring them back into production. I've loved 2 of them and recently traded my 2012 in for a Frontier because there was no Xterra to replace mine. I'm hoping with the increased popularity of the SUVs like the new Bronco, 4Runner and such that Nissan will see that this is a prime time to bring this back.
Haaaa! I know everybody is late to this party. I have had 2 X's over the last 17 years. Really nothing out there this capable anywhere near the pricepoint.
Prices are going through the roof. I just bought an Xterra last week. Pro-4X’s with less then 100k are going for $18-20k. Just make sure that your viewers know that any automatic Xterra’s from 2005-2009 will likely need a new transmission if the original radiator was never replaced.
My son is 13 and wants an Xterra as his first car in a few years- he loved this video. Thanks for sharing a video that us common folks can aspire to achieve.
Going to try to save my 2004 for my son, same age as yours! It will have over 300000 by then, but who cares, he wont be leaving town lol.... #mamabear #grrrr
Awesome young man that is thinking about every penny he’s spending, a beautiful tasteful build. This was a good looking ride and he’s improved it awesome build!!!👍👍👍
I agree. I wish most 17 year olds today has this kind of character. He probably does not have a cell phone mounted in front of his face 24 hours a day. He can also drive a manual transmission.
That is a great find! 160K on that engine is nothing. That Nissan V6 is a reliable beast. Sucks gas, but ultra-reliable with great power. I am with you, Andre! I really wish Nissan would bring back the X-Terra with that new Frontier styling and frame as a starting point.
Nissan has to bring back these awesome Offroader and with the new Frontier they have the perfect base for it. Didn´t know why they killed this so early (compared to the Frontier).
Basically the sales on them tanked. Other brands were putting out vehicles with better MPG and larger fuel tanks. Too bad. For the price, you couldn't beat these. I would love to see a new Xterra a year or two after the new Frontier launches.
Doesn't matter how cool a car is or how sought after it will be next year. If they aren't selling NOW they get the axe. Love the xterra, wish I could find a clean one and had room for it.
I have 220k with 4" lift ZERO issues. Been on several trips with a jeep gladiator rubicon and the xterra has been able to do just about all the gladiator can. Pretty awesome platform.
They're too focused on the rogue and murano for some reason lmao. Maybe if Nissan would get their heads out of their butts. They shouldve brought it back with the new frontier thats coming.
@@jscott7432 even the Frontier, what does it compete with... it’s not gonna outsell almost ever other pickup truck... Xterra comeback would be exactly like bronco... maybe smart to wait few years after bronco cools down then announce it
At the moment, Nissan is in turmoil, scrambling for cash and trying to right their ship. We should be glad they even "redesigned" the Frontier and offering us a "new" Z. That said, if the coming Frontier does well, I think we could see a return of the Xterra.
Beautiful truck! Mine is exactly the same color, one year older but only 113k miles.. lifted and 33s on.. my third Xterra in Saskatchewan Canada.. I wish I wouldn't have sold the two before.. great video!
The Xterras are great rigs. I have a 2000 Xterra and I've had it for the past 10 years and I'm in love with it. I've never owned a vehicle this long before
@@NSRS1 I love to see other 1st gen xterra owners. I have a 2001 with 187k miles. Just had the exhuast replaced and transmission fully rebuilt at 156k miles. Im hoping to get at least another 100k miles out of her. Timing belt and water pump are next on the list.
@@jscott7432 I'm the second owner. I bought it in 2011 with only 65000 miles on her and I'm the second owner. She has lived outside and got hit last year, but I cant bare to sell her. She has been dealer maintained since day one. Looks like hell lol. I think she may need a head gasket as I'm starting to lose Coolant invisibly. But still doesnt leak a drop of oil and everything works and she can still hang with almost anybody offroad. Not having front and rear lockers is the only hinderance. Such a fantastic rig for the price and the first gens were unkillable , in my opinion
I have a 2008 I bought for my son. 167k miles , new trans in 2018, needed new cats (very common) and a couple other small things. The truck is smooth, powerful and is almost entirely rust free. Ive debated getting rid of my Gladiator and buying like a 2012-15 pro 4x for myself.
Full appreciation for a very nice ride that did not require a winning lottery ticket. These were very capable truck from the start. Good foundation for your build. As you get a few dollars ahead you can make changes as you want to. Good luck with your truck, well done. 👍
Have a 2010 Xterra OR manual 6 speed that is still going strong in Colorado. Best vehicle Ive ever owned. Thanks for the review and sharing these ideas for easy mods!
Around 10:05 - Yes, the driver seat wear and tear on the Xterras is *very* common imo it's probably the jumping in & out of the truck and likely the type of material used on the seats Had on '05 i regretfully got rid of 7 years ago. I loved it so much...and miss it dearly. I'm currently about to purchase an '06 as i write this Xterras are the bomb 😎✌🏽
Nissan seriously ought to just pull out the old tooling and re-manufacture new X -Terra's. The high 20's to high 30 thousand price point is screaming for this truck. It's a youth magnet! Well done Angel. Very nice ride.
This kid did an awesome job - kudos to him! I would absolutely love to own this rig. I still have my 2006 OR in the same silver as this one, running DuraTracs. I preemptively changed the rad out, did the rear transmission vent line hack, and it still runs great with no timing chain issues thus far. Only thing is that the terrible salt in Ontario has given it some bad underbody rust. If/when it eventually dies, I'll be looking for a 2014/2015 Pro X as a replacement. I love how nimble it is, and the engine has good low end gusto. I don't need electronic frills of any kind to drive.
Im the second owner of my 2008 S 4x4. Come a long way though now. ARB front bumper, Hardcore rear bumper and tire carrier, 3 inch lift with wheels and 33 MTs. This summer, a VK56 (Titan V8) goes in. Driven desire is doing the swap. People dont realize how easy it is to mod these rigs and how durable they are.
Blows my mind they stopped making them, we had a 2008 4x4 manual new purchase, and we loved it...cool look and very capable. If they do bring it back, it'll probably come back as a bland bubble shaped cross over.
I just got an Xterra for free ! 160,000 miles and in great shape … dark blue ..An old lady just gave it to my wife and I. I’m still shocked beyond words…. I absolutely love it
I bought an 06 4x4 last year for $2900. It had 203000 on it its now sitting at 242000 with no issues so far other then a window regulator. I hope to get 300k
I came to my XTerra the same way. I was looking at 4Runners, but the price was more than I wanted to spend for those miles. Found my 2015 Pro 4X with 86k miles and I love this SUV. It is definitely a slept on SUV. The only downside is the aftermarket support. While you can find almost everything you need as far as upgrades, there are fewer companies that make them compared to Jeeps and Tacomas/4Runners so they tend to be expensive. The biggest issue to watch for in pre-2011s is with SMOD issues where the faulty radiator leaked into the automatic transmission creating the 'strawberry milkshake of death' and eventually grenading the transmission.
The seat wear must be common. My Frontier has similar damage. Still, that is an amazing buy for the price, especially an off road version with a factory rear locker. Only real issue to watch with an Xterra or Frontier was prior to 2011 there was a problem with the radiator that would let the coolant and transmission fluid mix (SMOD). This only affects the automatics, though. Bypassing the transmission heat exchanger in the radiator is the simple fix, or replace the radiator with the newer part to fix the problem (Nissan part 21460-9CA0E). They still have an oil to air cooler for the automatic transmission in front of the air conditioning condenser behind the grill. The 5 speed automatic is built well, it's the same transmission behind the 5.6 L V8 in the Armada, Pathfinder and Titan, but water in any transmission will destroy it. Of course this Xterra is not affected because it is a 6 speed. The 4.0L engine is the biggest of the Nissan VQ series, which has accumulated 15 Ward's 10 best engines awards over the years. I think the engine is the highlight of these vehicles. It's not the most efficient, but it makes great torque - perfect for a truck. I have stock 3.36 gears in my Frontier and with 33 inch offroad tires I never feel like it is under powered. It's not my daily driver so the fuel efficiency doesn't bother me. It gets 18 MPG on the highway with 33" tires, a lift and the front air dam removed - none of which help MPG. I hope Nissan takes the new Frontier and builds a new Xterra with that platform.
My 07 still running great at $222k. Keep an eye (or ear) on the aux timing chain issue. Mine are still ok but eventually will change those tensioners out...
What a badass Xterra! I just bought mine in 9/20. I live in Colorado also. I got a 6 speed manual in mine as well. Couldn't drive anything else. Exact same color. It's called Silver Lightning. I'm lovin' it so far. I wanna turn her into one just like this. This video is very inspiring. Also, my driver side seat has the exact same tear on the exact same spot. Lolol! Do you happen to know the Facebook group this guy belongs to? I'd like to join it to chat with fellow Xterra owners.
I love the Xterra. Sold my 2006 at 198000 miles and not a single issue with it ever. It's a beast. I regret selling it and looking for another one but they are going up andbup in price. For the worn seat, here's my tio, keep the damn side steps on, step on it when you enter or exit, grab hold of the handle bar on the A pillar and lift your butt into the seat, no problem. Didn't have a worn seat when I did that.
These cars are amazing really, myself drive a 2010 pathfinder, used to own 06 pathfinder too, I think this VQ40DE is the more powerful v6 than any other rivals, (correct me if Im wrong), and the only concerns are: 1. recovery hooks have only 2 bolts on the frame, have seen several of them got pulled out during recovery. 2. need additional skid plate in the front to protect radiator. there is a trick to show all the stats of the car during offroading which is really useful, I keep the coolant temp. on display during sand offroad at all time. PS: I live in UAE, current desert temp is 47C in the mid day and afternoon.
Great video ! and awesome and amazing truck build he got !! I hope my Xterra one day will look like that.. I got it not so long ago .. and now I am working on it.. fixing it , making it better little by little )) it will be a long journey but its a fun one. Who knows maybe on day I get my truck on your channel too lol for now.. I just film what I can do what I can fix and upgrade
The driver’s seat problem is a common one. Mine had the same issue. I miss it, bought it new in 2006 and kept it 12 years before I had to sell it. Loved the six speed, and that VQ40 pulled really hard. I surprised plenty of wannabe racers in their Civics and Accords with that thing 😂
My 2014 pro4x 6m only has 52,000 on the ticker . I get lots of offers and buisness cards under the wipers . My gen 1 rolled to 330,000 before i gave it to my nephew . Xterras are solid and if you get a manual there isnt alot to worry about .
I bought a 2007 last summer paid $8k with 111000 miles off road pakage up graded 6 cd stero and tow pakage love the vehicle i pull a Foresr River A frame pop up with great milage when towing 14mpg
Agreed. Hey, Nissan! C'mon guys. It's time to bring back a "New for the 2020's" Xterra. Get with it. You're loosing out to the over-priced 4-runner crowd.
I bought a mint 2002 xterra 3 month ago. Completely stock, and according to the carfax it stayed in the same family since new. The 3.3l V6 is very slow, and sucks up gas. But it's reliable.
I REALLY like the X Terra. I used to have a 1988 Nissan Desert Runner back in the day. Awesome truck, and it had the Baja front/rear bumpers, Baja Roll Bar that extended to the rear of the bed and the tire stand, it also had the VG30 V-6. Manual front locking hubs, manual 5 speed trans. That truck lasted FOREVER,,,,, Lol ! I sold it with 240K miles on it, and the only thing i ever had to replace, was the timing belt, a clutch, and a slave cylinder,,,,very minor stuff.
Ah! Easy like for the Xterra! The first car I owned! A sun yellow 2004 model. Crazy capable off road. With 3.5L was underpowered, and never got better than 13MPG, but I didn't care. That thing was comfortable and eye catching. But I was the third owner and with all my care, I had many mishaps with it! The alternator melted after 1 week of ownership. A foglamp got water and started a huge short-circuit on the main cable harness, melting and damaging most of the other cables in the bunch, and smoking the cabin, at 15000 feet in a sketchy mountain pass. The alternator melted the second time! The repair was a miracle in an native reservation with no repair shops in 100miles. Finally the Cyl-head gasket leaked, coolant entering the cylinders, totaling the block. I had to replace the whole short block. I still wouldn't have sold the yellow beauty, but kids came into my life and I needed a 3 row car for my growing family.
I just bought a 2002 from the original owner out of Virginia with 100,000 miles on it five speed manual six-cylinder four-wheel-drive. I paid $4400. There’s not a single speck of rust anywhere on the truck. Excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition. I just did a timing belt and water pump the other day.
07 xterra owner since 2010. STILL in love. flirted with trading in for a more gas efficient rig in 2022.... when they offered me 2k for my Xterra S with 115k miles i said nah its worth more to me and just saved up extra to buy new audi q5e and keep xterra as well
I had an 01 and traded it in for an 07 Off-Road. When they redesigned the it in 05 I waited a couple of years to trade my 01 for it. Both were great vehicles, my 07 was a beast. The only issue I had was paint. The channel on the roof was cracking and flaking off. The seat is an issue, mine was starting to wear.
Sweet ride! I bought a 2008 Supercharged Xterra new, sadly only kept it six months. I missed it so much that I bought. 2020 Gladiator so happy to be back in a off-road vehicle.
That Xterra is tops, but did I miss something,, where's the trailer hitch receiver? He's done nice mods to his Xterra and I think he's in for some nice off-roading soon. When I bought my Frontier in 2010, my wife wanted an Xterra but found that it was a tad too tall for entry and exit so she decided that she wanted a lower vehicle. So we looked at the 'little brother' of this Xterra, the XTrail. She absolutely loved that one. We started to do more road trips, and soon found that the 4 litre V6 with automatic trans. of the Frontier was just too thirsty. This is why I've been waiting all these long years for something new from Frontier, and now its on the way. We will see!
@@regsparkes6507 You asked where is the hitch receiver and I answered lol! Ofc now he can’t use a trailer hitch receiver. Not everyone tows I guess 🤷♂️
I had 2 Xterras and would get another if still offered. Worse decision Nissan made was taking them out of the product lineup and changing their Pathfinder into a crossover type of vehicle.
@@jamesalexander958 my bad lol its the only car i was able to afford, but didnt know there is a whole Community out here for the xterra and its my first car ever so Im learning as i go, looks like am gotta have to switch out the exhaust system pretty soon 😭
While I got a 2004 and honestly I love it with a passion really, amazing car. They actually made a new model of it but it’s not sold in the U.S.A unfortunately
Yes. Another Nissan. Time to dip into the old skool bag and pull out the great Nissan fleet. They made some awesome machines back in the day. Did you guys get the Nissan Patrol over there? That thing was a beast, and still is.
I bought a 2000 Xterra for 800 bucks a few years back. It has 227,000 miles and so far I've only had to do a valve job, head gaskets, timing belt, water pump, rear springs, shocks, tires, Injectors twice (Thanks Ebay), MAF sensor, front and rear brakes, Heater fan resistor, Radiator, Transmission rebuild ( Thanks to Trans cooler being in the radiator and cracking filling trans with coolant), Battery, alternator, (1) exhaust manifold, complete exhaust including convertors from manifolds to rear bumper, O2 sensors.... all true stuff, my wife asks why I throw money at a piece of crap and I show her the title....... SOOO all in all not a bad winter beater over 4000 dollars later. She's a gem... LOL FYI. I do my own work otherwise i would have burned her to the ground long ago if i had to pay a shop LOL I'm joking I love it and can't part with it.
