9:05 you should definatly change the Timing Chain Spokets as well the lower ones look rather worn. Also i dont think it is a good idea to not at least change the oilscraper rings

As always you show no fear taking a beast of an engine apart Dean. The rain was was clearly coming down when you recorded this, I had to look outside it was so clear over the speakers, good luck with the rest of your build.
Think the big end bolts and main bearing bolts are ment to be one time use only, unfortunately if so that's another expensive email, if he does change them
Those chain guides look just well used honestly however they are extremely worn for such a low mileage engine I had a 2006 Camry with 300,000 mi (482000 km) on it and it had similar wear so yeah they must use the cheapest plastic on planet Earth over at audi

After finding your channel I now watch other guys rebuilding industrial machines , guys stripping and rebuilding tanks and various other channels, just the same as you but maybe not quite as finessed and obviously much bigger socket sets! Fair to say, at £5k for the engine, £3.5k for parts, and another grand for sundries, you'll have a new engine for half the cost of one from Audi? Winner, mate.
Tell you what Dean, I would not even attempt to rebuild that engine, the work involved is just Faaaaaa. Well done m8, I look forward to seeing it done.
The bearing at the rear of the crank is actually the pilot bearing and they put them in both DSG and manual transmissions I'm pretty sure automatics don't have them but I don't know
Great job Dean. A frightening amount of dismantling and parts everywhere. The pistons and conrods sat on the edge of a small granny table were making me feel uneasy though. 😂
Am really impressed with this….when you have everything on the bench..there must be a system where it has come off in order to then reassemble the same way???

I suggest you check out VAG Teknik Dudley. This would include the chain/s wear, camshafts and equally important, the rocker arm needle bearings - Upgrade available from Audi? Best Wishes and good luck!

Hi Dean, I have an R8 in the V8 version and I recently had a fire in the engine, apparent cause was a cam shaft solenoid. Just came to mind whilst you were taking apart the engine, just wanted your thoughts please. Thanks Raj

I can’t believe how calm you are in the face of all them bits! And the task ahead. I’d be huddled up in the corner of the unit twanging my lips ! Even if I managed to get it back together there’d be loads of spare bits left over and one gone awol in the block somewhere. Fair play Dean your one hell of a mechanic. Regarding all the surplus parts you have amassed. Would it be worth employing someone who knows how to list parts for sale on Ebay etc, even for a few days, to get rid of the whole lot. Shouldn't cost too much in wages/payment?
I would get an oil pump if i were you dean. My bro got stuffed up with an old faulty one once when he reconditioned his gearbox on his motorbike and had to do it all again with a new gearbox. The oil pump was stiff to turn and notchy when he tried to turn it. All was ok the second time round and his gearbox has lasted nearly 50,000 miles so far on his honda hornet 600.
Great video, have you/can you use TPS? They supply VAG group, they’re trade only but I’ve always got much better prices than going through Audi Part counter.
What I don't understand is that you say you take pictures and stuff but don't you follow a service/tech manual? If not how do you torque to correct specs etc later on when reassembling ?
The shaky camera doesn't do you justice. Maybe think about mounting it on a tripod or on a gimbal of some sort. You do a great job everywhere else, it's just I'm having a hard time watching with all the shakiness. It gives me a headache
Do not skim the heads unless they are warped. There's no reason to. Skimming will increase compression, elongate the chain, modify the injector spray pattern and throw off any bolt holes for any accessories that bolt across both head and block.

Fastinating content but hope you don’t mind me saying, but I’m still struggling why the total rebuild on a normally ok used engine, certainly the timing kit and possibly the cylinder head but seems very thorough though

tip new rings not necessary unless it has been hot just cleaning may be a quick ball hone [ deglaze ]as for ring gap we routinely add loads of gap for turbo charging with no ill effects
Dean dean dean ,no new engine be seen , a strip down instead, starting with cylinder head ,watching my man fixing the car, on a RU-vid channel the best by far😅, vag vag vag
It's called a spigot bearing and surely, the tensioners all rest against the 'slack' side of each chain so wear on the surface will not effect valve timing. It does make you think, all that material worn off the face of the tensionet has ended up in the engine oil though.
