This is a topic I've wanted to cover forever, but was never really sure how to about until now. It's common knowledge at this point that SFV has really been through the wringer, but it's come a seriously long way since then, especially since Season 5. Considering the current state of the game, I can confidently say I love Street Fighter V, so let's talk about that!
Special thanks to Metalqueersolid and Brutus for sharing some cool examples of combos with me!

You sir have earned my respect when you said Oro is the crown jewel of SF5. People fail to understand how great of a character he is. His design, the way he looks, the way he fights, his combos.. everything about him is amazing. Such an underrated character.

I’m still impressed by how well Dan was handled. Obviously still a joke but his taunts are becoming more useful, he had the coolest “nerf” with red fireball, he got the punches from omega and he has a 1 bar v trigger. What’s not to love?

His VT1 when fully charged is actually probably the second best projectile in game when it comes to interacting with another. Only Gill's VT1 breaks it or another Dan charged VT1.

I really really love Akira, because even though her kit was fundamentally a bit on the basic side, she made up for it with complex interactivity, depending on opponent positioning; her combos change so much, and she rewards recognizing different situations more than most characters too, she has the stuff I really love from SF3: niche, high power and *flexible* juggles, optimizing all the different juggle positions and starters feels so good, and then you mix in the feint cancels they added later, her super jump stuff and it's just the best. Also her EX VS1 Fireball which is just a wall bouncing fullscreen gun is just so addicting

SFV is currently an amazing game. Most of the detractors online parrot the same talking points that either are no longer relevant/present in the final version of the game, or are just purposefully vague and don't actually describe their faults with the game. The "stubby normals" and "characters tools are locked behind v-trigger" are just not that true? And I don't think it speaks to what they actually don't like about the game (Do you WANT Oro to have tengu stones all round?). SFV is a good game. But it will always be cool to hate on it.

I agree with this. I don't like SFV but it would be crazy to say it's not a good game right now. I think we have to make a separation between something not being someone's preference and something being bad. Too many people combine the two. "I don't like this game therefore it sucks" vs "It's cool, it's just not for me"
@Gramasz
@Gramasz Год назад
And for all those reasons in sf6 they removed the idea of a come back mechanic+tools unlocked behind it. They reintroduced hurtbox and made the normals less stubby. They added recovery frames on normals. They removed stupid plus ob moves, they removed proximity block.... Oh boy yes. Sf5 is a great game so why change everything about it? Spoiler. It's not a great game

SFV is really cool in that the final patch the game got made it unquestionably the best version of the game in its history. It’s incredible how Capcom turned an absolute dumpster fire into a fantastic main line game with years of dedication With that amount of foresight, I have no doubt in my mind that Capcom will nail SF6’s launch. If they did this well turning SFV into a great game, SF6 can only go up from here

I have mixed feelings about SFV, though it’s more positive than negative and I like it WAY more than 4. One thing I can give it credit for is being the only time I’ve seen a character get nerfed and think “woah that’s genius”. Dan’s random red fireball is one of the most clever character changes I think I’ve ever seen in a fighting game, full stop.

I know if you're not interested in actually playing then I can't make you, but I totally want to recommend getting Street Fighter 6 on the launch day, if you can. The first few months of a new fighting game's release is one of the most fun times to play a fighting game. Even if it's your first arcade fighter, you'll have just as much experience with the game as everyone else. You might even be able to beat a mid level player, like Big Yellow. Even if you don't want to play online, there looks like enough single player content to still make a fun game and it's looking really good. It also has easier controls (basically Smash inputs) if you just want to see and do cool moves/combos.

It's not perfect but it was the game that opened my eyes to the genre. I always played sf4 and mkx thinking these games are fun to press buttons in but getting good is just to time consuming. Sfv was the first fighter I attempted to get good in and I'm pretty happy with the results. I started as a measly know nothing bronzie back in season 2 of the game and became a crusty old man hardstuck in diamond before the games final update released. My golden epiphany with this game though was that I understood the basis on how fighters worked. I understood how to take the tools the game gave me and utilize them, system mechanics, frame data and all. It's almost like learning a language and the reward was getting to communicate towards a broader audience. Now I can play sf4, sf3, mk11, Ggxrd, ggs at a moderate level and enjoy myself.

As someone who cares a lot about the character storylines in Street Fighter, this game felt like a great compilation of all the lore throughout the series and some interesting new stuff as well. I also appreciate the way that seemingly every character is highly specialized so when you find a character that works for you, they really work for you.
@Nykdos
@Nykdos Год назад
I started playing fighting games with +R, right at the end of 2021, and it was kinda stressful to learn how to pay attention to the screen and react to things when you have so many moving parts that can also change with every character, so it's no surprise I ended up being pretty burned out after a while of stressing myself in match and while labbing. Then I tried SFV, and while it still was stressful at times, I started to slowly learn how to observe my opponent (who was generally at the same skill level as I was) and react accordingly, and then, I fell in love with how this communication works, with how you can say to another person "I know what you're doing" and they can also say that to you, just by how they act in game. Now, I still can get stressed at times, but even then I have fun, I can laugh about what happened and still learn one thing or another about mine or other characters. When I reached my goal in SFV (reaching ultra silver, I know it's a minor achievement, but it's something I did), I went back to +R with this different mindset and fell in love with the game too! Now I'm trying to get some time free to improve more in SFV. So yeah, for helping me to really get into fighting games, SFV will have that little special place with me. (P.S. Your videos also helped me a lot during this journey, as it was pretty entertaining and sometimes useful to learn more about anything related to fighting games. Thank you!)

I used to be really defensive of my love of SFV and I couldn’t really find the words as to why I did, but I think this video helped me to find it. When you were talking about how watching the game was so much fun because you could see pros do things and then do them yourself, I really felt that same connection because that’s how I learned everything I know about all fighting games. SFV is my first Street Fighter game and I’ve only been playing fighting games for like 3 or 4 years total, so it was super neat stumbling into the end of a game that I genuinely loved. I’ve only played street fighter since Oro came out, so I guess I don’t really have the full experience, but the last few months of this game have been the most fun I’ve had in the FGC since I started playing Tekken 7 in 2017-2018.

The biggest thing that makes me love SFV is that so many of the newcomers feel really cool or unique in a good way. A lot of people don't like FANG but I'm always partial to wacky reset shenanigan characters. Menat is extremely fun and cool to watch even if her VT1 makes me want to jump off a cliff when I'm on the receiving end. Nash is just an aggressive Guile with super-speed or whatever the lore is and I think that's neat Abigail's design is stupid but in terms of gameplay he's extremely enjoyable and has the most fun move in the game, that being if course VS2. Rashid is a favorite and for good reason he's extremely sick Zeku is amazing, a stance character that changes age and has a little animal buddy along with some of the cleanest animations in all of Street Fighter And above all the others, G is the best fighting game character of the past 10 years. One of the most unique styles of gameplay I've ever seen, constantly leveling yourself up through each round with the swankiest moves that feel like constantly styling on your opponent. Match that all with G's incredibly charismatic personality and you get an 11/10 character. It's not all winners, like I think Ed and Falke are kinda lame and I straight up just don't like Luara or Necalli but when SFV makes a good character, they make a *GOOD* character.

It has a lot of the same things you love about SFV (very flexible combos, rewards players for experimenting with weird confirms and combines input leniency with high situational awareness). At the same time, it shares a lot of the DNA of Guilty Gear, and seeing how you play both +R and Strive that may be a good thing for you. I'd personally recommend you start by taking a look at Azrael; he's a big body who hits like a truck and has unbelievably flashy combos that are mechanically simple, but feature a ton of variation based on starters, screen position and spacing. Crush counters (and SF6 Punish Counters) was a really good way to tell players: Hey, here is your chance to land a bigger combo, I don't get it why it was so maligned. Then again, SFV was maligned for absolutely everything at some point. Some of it deserved, some of it was unwarranted
@Jako3334074
@Jako3334074 Год назад
i think it was mainly the fact that the crush counter property was sometimes given to some heavy normals which were difficult to contest in neutral and the crush counter property leading to easy confirm (random example urien on release slap chopping it up); in previous sf games these type of normals, while still being oppressive, usually did not lead into anything but now they were also incredibly rewarding (and they also happened to beat out the L/M normals on trades due to the priority system but that's just an additional bonus) (edit: later balance changes made these moves have longer whiff recovery and lead to less dmg on cc generally, i think)

Under Night In-Birth doesn't get enough love. It is a game that French Bread took all the lessons from Melty Blood from and made the game they wanted to make. It has pretty unique characters and some really good game mechanics that a lot of people have found to be answers to some of fighting games' biggest questions. It's biggest downside is that it has no rollback netcode whatsoever.

SFV is one of those games where I've always loved and appreciated it for what it is but at the same time when people complain about it I'm like "yep, that's absolutely fair". I think it helps that I've absolutely loved every character I've played (Urien, Gill, Oro) It's refreshing to see people kind of unanimously excited for SF6 though. (also love the sweater queen

Hating on SFV is the new equivalent of people making "Street Fighter: SUPER HYPER CHICKEN CHOKER RAINBOW FIGHTING - FT. John Cena. Griddy Edition" jokes. The more invested fans are like "Come on people. It's not that bad." and more casual fans are like "But, are we wrong?". The people defending it has to be like "...No...But, if you let me explain-!!...no you're not wrong..."

@@zanpakutoman4225 its the most annoying fighting game I've ever played. Hyper aggressive, unreactable dashes, highly committal Fullscreen/half screen moves that punish fireballs on almost every character, defensive options that are too risky for not that much reward, bullsht comeback mechanics, ugly art direction ECT. This game has tons of things that I'd consider bad fighting game design.

Wow what a love letter to SFV. I love this game too and thanks for this vid. Its funny cause this was the main SF game for my duration of college. I wanted to get good at it seriously too. When game launched I went with Bison because the was the only character I kind of wanted to learn. That was the first ever charge character I learned and I remember back then thinking I didn't want to play a charge character. I'm glad I put the time in though because he taught me you can do it if you out in the effort. I came back when Kage was announced because he's my favorite edgelord just to mess around a bit. I actually started playing a bit of ranked with him. I had gotten better at other fighters since then and could actually do more combos and confirms than when I last touched the game. Then I finally came back after getting into more SFV content creators and oh man did I truly come to realize what an awesome game this is. I finally committed hard to learned Zeku. That character has taught me so much about fighting games I don't even know where to start. It was such a commitment to learning two characters essentially, but it was so rewarding. He really in the character for me in how cool he is and his swiss army knife gameplay. He really was a character I believed in and grew with. I think I'm better at dissecting any other fighting game I ever pick up from this point on because of my time spent in the lab, ranked, and locals playing Zeku. Its been great to watch this game grow over time. You just feel like a proud Dad knowing how far its come top be such a sick game.

Totally respect this video, just think it's cool that this game clicked for you so much. I personally haven't been a big fighting game player; aside from Smash, I think I've only played Soul Calibur 3 and Persona 4 Arena, the latter really not clicking and the former only getting a lot of play time because I'm a solo moder and Chronicles of the Sword exists. And even then I never stuck with a run to the end. However, I have been feeling like trying out a Guilty Gear game recently, probably gonna start by emulating one of the earlier ones. Hopefully something clicks somewhere, since now I actually kinda give a crap.

I had a very similar experience with Uchu mega FIght! In that game there's an autofire for attack buttons (so basically infinite buffer) and you only have 2 buttons, but it require mostly much more precise spacing and cancel timing to do the higher damage combo, while making every single charter easily playable in a casual level. Labbing in that game is so fun because there are so many fun combos to discover with every character.

I’m a big SFV fan that was also insanely critical of the games first 2 years and the subsequent issues that popped up till season V. As the first fighting game I took really seriously I recognize it’s many flaws but felt that even back during season 3 the game was good. It lacked in areas that SF6 is making up for. I’m glad SFV happened because it really showed me how much I love SF and fighting games in general. Fantastic video!

Can say to the title,I do too. I’m glad it is the way it is now and that it managed to attract new players,just like me,and kept them over. Even now I was just messing some stuff in training mode lol. Really excited to watch this almost half hour long video lol,and almost a minute in I’m already seeing some clean edit as well as the point about the game not getting that much inherent love even now soo well yknow,thanks for making this as well haha👍

I actually got into SFV on the ground floor and played until a small while into season 2 (one of my more popular videos is an overview of Laura’s season 2 changes), and those two seasons of the game honestly sucked. I don’t play the game any more but season 5 of SFV is genuinely really cool, because it’s the version of SFV that understands the strengths of SFV. Also I’m a massive Rival Schools fan, so seeing Akira come in and be such a faithful representation of her home game’s mechanics was really awesome

It'll be a really nice closing on this chapter of SF. Great video btw!

Personally, I didn’t like it, but I think it’s mostly because I haven’t found a street fighter game other than 3rd strike that works for me. I just am not a fan of the way any of the games play with air space, and I like jump in parry more than I like the way any other SF mechanic feels, I dunno. That said, very cool video and I particularly liked the part abt starting to get your head around why good players make certain decisions, it’s a part of watching games like KOF XV and Xrd that really gets me invested in competitive matches, even if I don’t know or am not really invested in any of the players in the bracket

As much as I liked the sides gimmick for Gill, giving him fire and ice versions of moves was such an insanely good idea, and giving Dan the rapid punches to make him even more of a parody of SNK's Ryo was genius as well. I also like the V-system in concept but they felt oddly tacked on to me. Making the Skills and Triggers into regular moves or supers for some of the world warriors in SF6 just made them shine even more, especially Guile's Sonic Blade, and Ryu's charge trigger just being turned into a binary state was a fantastic touch

SFV ended up not being a game I could personally really get into but I enjoyed the time I spent with it. This is a really cool video. As for an underappreciated game that I like, people meme a lot on Dino Rex for being a bad game (and they're right that it's pretty rough) but I find the way space control plays out in it really neat, in no other game has the corner been scarier and it adds a lot of tension to an otherwise very barebones fighter. It's got a lot of charm graphically too and I really think it could have been a very unique entry if the devs had had more time to polish it up.

I started playing street fighter V in season 5 right after Dan was released. SFV Is my very first traditional fighting game and I didn’t start really trying to improve until about last month. Right now I’m hardstuck silver and I’m learning the game with Cody and I’m having an absolute blast. I’m a Cody one trick but I plan to pick up more characters as I improve. I want to hit gold before SF6 releases. I’m not sure if I can say I love it just yet but I do love playing Cody and I do really enjoy the game. I really do want to get better at the game and fighting games in general. I played a bit of guilty gear strive and even though I’m extremely mashy in that game (I’m kinda mashy in fighting games in general) I absolutely love it. But this is the game that introduced me to fighting games (not counting smash) and got me fully invested into street fighter as a franchise.

One aspect I like about SFV, specifically SFV in the latter half, is single-player. The game went from not having any single-player at all, to having a bunch of modes I can mess around offline, be it Team Battle, or 6 different Arcade Mode paths with unlockable artwork, some of which may be tied to ridiculous requirements. Shame some of them are tied to limited-time events like the Extra Bosses, so I have to use mods to fight them in VS mode, but the variety's nice.

I've only really gotten into SFV recently and I'm having a blast. I had this preconceived notion that SFV was a very honest, footsie based game with very traditional mechanics but what I've discovered goes against all of that - but in the best of ways. It's not just shimmys and cross ups (though silver Ryu's and Ken's would tell you differently). This game is full to the brim with everything that makes a fighting game great. My only regret is that I didn't get into it sooner.

It took me a longggg time to get into Street Fighter V. SFIV was the first fighting game I ever got into learning for real, and SFV felt too different from it and I never gave it a proper chance. Not to mention that the game had none of my characters from IV. But season 5 really drew me in with those dev videos and Dan, probably my favorite or second favorite character from IV (possibly second to Dudley, who I remain very sad that he wasn’t in V and doesn’t look like he’ll be in the base roster of VI)

Also finally learning to whiff punish only improved my fundamentals in every other game I play. A+ experience even after taking away invincible DP's. Couldn't be me maining fang feeling bad for a shoto.
