I Got a Flat Tire AND Dropped My Africa Twin on My Way to Go Motorcycle Camping

I was so excited to head out to go moto camping on my Honda Africa Twin so that I could meet up with Beards, Bikes, and Camping and to motorcycle camp overnight before we took part in the "Pack it Out" forest clean up event organized by As the Magpie Flies. It turned out that the most exciting part of the trip happened before I even got to the campground. I got an Africa Twin flat tire in the front and had to remove the tire and swap out the tube on the side of the road. After I had completed my whole Africa Twin tire changing operation, I was tightening my bags back down on my bike and ended up performing one of my signature motorcycle fails: I accidentally pulled my bike over, dropping it all the way to the ground. I had never picked up my bike before, so I had to figure out how to pick up a Honda Africa Twin by myself for the first time on the side of the road. Afterward, I ended up dropping my bike again (off camera, sadly) while looking for Travis at our original meet up spot. Fortunately, I was able to locate him at Jones Creek Campground and fill him in on my whole Africa Twin flat tire and motorcycle drop adventure.

It definitely took some negotiating with myself to stop and set it up. I always just want to get done and get out of there as quickly as possible. Forced myself to leave the helmet cam running and at least set up the other so I could make a vid and hopefully others can learn from my mistakes.

Wow what a day! Thanks to nobody else, you persevered and got it done; there’s a lot of satisfaction to be had in that. At the end of the day, you laughed, smiled and had a few beers. Makes for a good day and a great memory. Thanks for sharing, always enjoy tagging along. The tip over slow-mo was my favorite, just shows we’re all human. Most of us can see ourselves doing something like that! 😀

This is what makes me want to convert over to tubless, when I get my AT. A quick tire plug and cement, and 5 minutes later, you're back on the road.

Thanks for the reality check and honesty. It brings it all back to a “human level” for the rest of us ADV riders that have to adhere to the concept of gravity. On a serious note, hats off on the tube change. I had a flat last month on the Idaho BDR to the rear tire. I’m pretty sure the sidewalls on my Dunlop Trail Max were made of concrete- I simply couldn’t get the darn thing off!

Great stuff. Was on hiway between Boise and McCall ID returning from IDBDR and had a flat. Hot as hell when police pulled over a Harley 30 feet from me. Never checked on my status and left. My top tip for tyre changes at home, try and make the tyre hot as possible by riding or with a heat gun. It makes it so much easier to roll off the bead. If it's a roadside change, at least it's already hot.

Thanks for taking the time to set up the camera and film it anyways. Not much for me to learn there as I've already done those things, changed tubes on the side of the road and dropped my Africa Twin and had to pick it up solo. At least one flat that I had on the side of the road I did have a younger gentleman stop and help me out. I had everything I needed tolls wise and the know-how, but it was nice to have the extra hands for the rear tire.

I pinched four straight tubes trying to fit my first tyre, went into the shop to buy a fifth tube and they go look mate, bring us your wheels and ten bucks and we'll fit them for you. Admitted defeat and went for it. To be fair though I was trying to fit Mitas E07+ my first time out of the gate and I hear they're a bastard with the stiff sidewalls. Now I more or less live in mortal fear of this happening to me.

Good meeting you at TouraTech Rally, enjoyed your presentation with lessons and inspiration related to everyday life. Looking forward to a video of you converting your AT wheels to tubeless. The rear tire is easy conversion, front a little more questionable. I get lots of flats on my rear wheel, few on the front. Sure is nice to simply plug a tire and not mess with a tube. Have you tested slime or ride on sealant. An FYI - The AT rear tube is extremely large and most places do not carry that size. When my rear tire is ready for replacement I am converting to tubeless tire via sealing the wheel.

I've had excellent results with Ride on*** on my tubed tires.. it balances, and it legit works as a sealant. I ran over a large nail sized construction staple that pierced the tire and tube twice.. when I noticed it (I really don't know how long it was in the tire), it only ever lost 1 psi and after I removed the staple it never lost air (after over inflating to test) for at least 1500 mi before I changed the tire and tube (the tires were worn so I rode em out). I actually replaced the Shinkos 805s I had with these MItas e-07, i like them. (**Updated.. I called the product ride on.. which is. Helper spring lol).

Watching this video makes me wonder how I would deal with this flat if it were windy, wet, getting dark, and fifty six degrees. Honda really needs to offer the Transalp with two wheel options. Tubed or tubeless. Why put off-road wheels [expensive?] on a bike without the proper suspension, proper exhaust system, and clearance. What Honda really needs to do is come out with a new engine for the CB500X. A little brother to the new 750. Something that could crank out 65 HP.

Absolutely epic, I loved you punishing yourself with the slo-mo!!! That footage is priceless. Thank you for being completely real, I get to see the good, the bad and the ugly. We make these mistakes but rarely repeat them. You will most likely support the high side next time you pull a strap tight. You get bonus points for letting it fall. I saw you think about trying to catch it and immediately give up on that idea. Good call. When I was headed to Craters of the moon in Idaho I neglected to fill up at a fuel station in Leadore ID and ran out of gas twice. Once on hwy 28 where I put in my emergency liter. That got me [almost] to Arco ID. I ran out of fuel 5 miles from town in 100+ heat. I had to think on the fly, my disability limits me on how much I can do in hot weather. I briefly considered walking, similar to you thinking about trying to catch the scooter. A phone call to a random stranger working at the Sinclair Station in Arco ID got me a gallon of fuel delivered, they would not accept repayment. Lesson learned. I stop for scooters even if in my cage, having been on the side of the highway needing help I know how it feels. Great video I am looking forward to the next installment.

Ok, now I'm terrified - my CRF250l does not have center stand nor any place to take that ammount of tools. Nor 12V socket. I'm toast if I have a flat and would have to leave the bike in the field and hike to nearest street to catch a ride home. Now that is scary perspective. Most probably the bike would be gone. Is there a magic trick to avoid that other than "never buy a bicycle without center stand or never go off road"?

That bike falling made me lol, it's always just a tiny shift in weight that does it 🤷‍♀️

Dang. There is gotta be an eaiser way to change a tire. I put Ride-On Motorcycle Tire Balancer & Sealant in my tires. But then I ride a Harley Davidson 2018 Fat Bob FXFBS. I have been looking at getting an African Twin though.

Would you consider a review of the CSC RX-4. It is a Chinese import adventure bike. It is sold in the U.S. by California Scooter Company. The reason I am interested in it is its base price. They use to offer an earlier version call the RX-2. Which was a 250cc. And every objective review I read on that bike was that if that was all you have to spend it was ok but it was not that good of a bike. the RX-4 is a 450cc Which interest me for the greater power and the possibility of riding 2 up.

I'd happily review one if I could get my hands on it.

@@DorkintheRoad the base price of the RX-4 is $6500 versus $18000+ for the version of the Africa Twin that I want. Less than triple the price and designed to be an adventure and camping bike make it really attractive to me.

What caused the tire to go flat? If I had a flat the last thing I would be worried about would be filming it. Love these videos.

It wasn't clear out there but I got another flat when I got home and discover a pretty big gash in my tire sidewall

This is too funny because it’s all too relatable. Having crash bars makes picking up a bike so much easier. My non-adv friends wonder why I carry tools, a pump, etc. This is why. Once they get their first flat in the middle of nowhere they will understand too. Never wishing it on anything but, as they say, always be prepared.
