The weekend homestead project: Working at a Minnesota walleye fish hatchery.
If you have seen the movie "Meet the Fockers" you are familiar with the phrase "you can milk anything with teats", "I've got teats Focker, can you milk me?"
Fish might not have teats but you can milk them! Kind of......
The build budget at the off grid tiny cabin has been a bit dry lately so when a temporary job opportunity presented itself I jumped on it. I've been working some overnight shifts at a fish hatchery. It's a really interesting process and it's been fun to be part of the process of hatching fish for release into area lakes. Walleye, bass, northern pike, crappie, sunfish, bowfin, bullhead, perch, carp and suckers all wind up in the net but only the walleye are stripped for spawn. It's just a seasonal job and will be over in about 6 weeks then it's back to the land and the weekend homestead for a few weeks.

I've watched the egg taking here in Michigan several times. Very interesting. The DNR launch on the river, travel upstream to deeper holes. They use electric shock sticks on long poles and collect the stunned fish with nets. Back at the launch they have temporary pens on the ramp, for processing the fish.

Thanks for taking us along on this Terry! I’ve always wanted to see the process! There is a place up on Lake Vermilion that does this. They actually used to give people the suckers that they caught in the nets. People would leave with coolers full of them! I don’t think they do this anymore though. Hope you can get out this weekend! 🎣 ❤️🌲

The folks that came to watch the fish get stripped in the morning said that they used to do that with bullheads at this hatchery! I suppose someone complained and put an end to it. I'm not sure I'll get out but if I do.......I know where i'm fishing!

Very informative. The process of hatching walleyes has to be very similar to any other "stocking" fish. The capture method would vary, I'm sure. A small story; I was camping on a stream in northeastern Georgia and fishing where a bridge crossed the creek. Suddenly, a tanker truck from the hatchery showed up and dumped around 200 trout into the creek (average size 18 inches) The man just said; "have fun"/ I caught my limit in about 10 minutes. I would love to tie into a 28 inch Walleye . When I catch a fish, I don't just jerk it out of the water, the fight is 1/2 the fun. Enjoy your job Tre, It IS somewhat unique. ;-)

Terry you mentioned about the glowing of the walleye's eyes, and I just happened to run into this bit of info: "Walleye have a unique adaptation that allows them to see in low light conditions, helping them to actively feed at night. This special lining on the inside of eyes is called the “tapetum lucidum,” and is the reason why their eyes appear to be glowing when you catch them at night. Owls, cats, dogs, deer and bears also have a tapetum lucidum.". There ya go lol!

Do as the crown says, not as the crown does. Could you imagine the fines and crap one would go through if old green jeans walked up on a normal person with an illegal fish trap like that even if they were trying to honestly increase the population and not just make a profit from it like they do. Just saying.
