When I was in my band,I followed the vocals and bass more than anything lol! That is true! We often practiced without vocals too but, yeah it just hit harder with jimmy singing.

I am a manager for a band that had two US tours this past year and is about to play 16 shows in Europe. The most important thing you can do as a musician is NETWORK. The difference in talent between musicians is negligible. Once someone is good enough to be a sessionist, they are good enough to go on tour. Sure, if you have weaknesses, then you obviously have to fix them and work on them, but that is a given. But the reality is the talent level is a given for someone who can do session work. What matters WAY more is are you someone that the band wants to live with on the bus for 5-6 weeks. Are you likeable? Are you a slob? Are you late? Do you smoke? Those things are the FIRST things we would look for WAY before technical proficiency. Your technical ability gets you the interview. Anyone good enough to get an interview has the talent. What matters the most are the things previously mentioned. If we needed a new drummer for our European tour, and needed them to be ready in a week, I could find a dozen possible people in a matter of days. The human aspect cannot be over stated. And as with most things in life, NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. I am friends with Scooter Braun's managerial team, with a top 50 on Spotify pop artist, but also a bunch of up and coming bands, producers, and so on. We wrote a song with 21 Pilots because our producer put us in contact as a favor to us, and he came to our house while ON TOUR on a day off to write a song (to be released in two weeks). That only happened because of our networking, and we wrote another song together this summer. Be friendly and available. It REALLY matters.

THANK YOU. This is excellent advice, and a REAL answer. I’ve always felt like I’ve worked hard, have the talent, and can play most of whatever it is I’m looking to play. Am I as good as Luke Holland or Chris Turner? No, not yet at least. More importantly, tho, is that I don’t need to be, and neither does any other solid musician. And I think more people need to hear things like this. So, again, thank you.
@Syrin23

@@chrisbaune9 Glad to help. Here's a story from the road from our last tour to highlight this. We were on tour with an artist with 40 million monthly Spotify listeners. Her manager is also Justin Bieber's manager. In other words, we were dealing with the top tier of the music industry. The other band on tour with us had a GREAT drummer. Jazz drummer, very talented. BUT, after their set, they would routinely leave the stage, rush to the merch booth then go to dinner. They NEVER broke down their gear. I told them they needed to break down their gear before heading out just as a favor as a fellow band on tour trying to help each other out. On the night of the third show of the tour, they did the same thing. Why this matters is ALL their gear was side stage, it was dark, and the path to the stage was narrow. The headliner was a very pampered artist and having an off night meaning her managerial team was tense. There was no room to maneuver to set the stage for the headliner due to all their gear, mostly drums. Her manager lost it, called them up and told them they need to get back to the venue immediately pack up all their gear or they would be removed from the tour that night. This was mostly the fault of the drummer. They made a terrible impression with some of the biggest names in the business because they wouldn't break down their gear, set it off to the side out of the way then go do their fun stuff. Stuff like this REALLLY matters. I have literally never seen someone get rid of a musician over their technical ability or performance. It's always been over the off stage stuff like this.

Hey Gabe, been a while since I’ve commented. I graduated high school and am now in my third year of college leading my music club’s rock band for a year now! We had our first show of the semester after not playing together live for months and we killed it, thank you for offering your insight and lessons as they’ve helped shape my drumming career. Kind of crazy to see my progress from drumming at home to now doing performances in the campus pub every few weeks with other talented musicians, but thank you again

I think #8 is absolutely THE MOST crucial. You're going to have to make sacrifices in other facets of your life. I was in a semi-touring band in the early 2000's until I met my now ex wife. If you don't have a supportive partner / spouse / significant other who understands this, you're going to have a difficult time pursuing any goals that you have. Not just music. I love to see that you have a wife who supports what you were aiming for. I lived this and paid the price. I'm now 45 years old, divorced, and haven't played out other than in church for years and now making cover videos in my bedroom. I'm also in a career where I'm 7 years from retiring with a pension and would be dumb to leave unless an amazing opportunity some how materialized. At some point you have to make the decision; Do I really want to "make it" as a musician, or do I just like the idea of it.

Air drumming is so underrated lmao Been learning songs like that ever since: listening to it, playing air drums to it, shifting it to the kit, getting better & better. Great way to learn imo, really improves the way you listen to songs (catching hidden details and stuff like that) Edit: Gabe it's really fun to hear, how you've developed your style over the last two albums. Totally love it

I got more relived when you said to one of your guitar tech who was playing the show alongside that its ok to make mistake in middle of the show and that won't break my mindset down , those words must be quoted with gold . lots of love from India brother .

Great video. I would add that once you achieve a skill, keep practicing it even if you are no longer in a professional setting. One thing I've learned touringnin bands on a professional level. The most important skill of all. Be easy to hang out with. Don't be a weirdo or a pre Madonna and whine etc etc. yea of course you have to play good but there are ALOT of good players now. More than ever. But honestly most the gigs I got were just being able to hang. After all you are living with other people in a bus or van for weeks at a time and the last thing everyone wants is to babysit or have some sing song hanging around. That's really it. Also learn how to be good with $. Metal bands don't make $ anyway so be careful

"I dont have a drum set so I cant actually practice and get better" FALSE. I have NEVER owned a drum set and ive sat maybe 3 minutes behind a real drum set when I was 12 and im 30 now. I can play stuff like AC/DC, Green Day, and even some Avenged Sevenfold songs too. The point is you dont need a drum set to practice drums. The most critical part of playing drums is making sure your tempo is consistent and notes are evenly spaced apart and you DO NOT need a drum set for that. Hell, you can even buy one of those drum pads off of Amazon for $40 and itll get you tremendously far so that when you learn to play a real drum set, youll already have the hardest part down.

Other people are overrated, and seeing them is even more overrated.
