You can always lift an item a few inches off the trailer then drive the trailer away to avoid needing to lift said item over the rails.

5 years ago all you YT guys and girls were thinking where the fuck should you hang clamps, maybe the back of the door will do! And now? Look at you, everybody having their own sawmills, big shops, cnc machines, lifts... This is really motivating. Have fun with your new toy!

when they said flat and level, that is what they meant. Dig it out and pour a slab with bolts to secure the mill or you will be fighting this hillside forever.

Yeah, I'm going to see how it goes and check it often. I'll likely end up pouring a slab at some point.

Great video. You were right on with the comment about Matt. I actually went up to Matt’s house and bought some big maple slabs from him. He is a small dude but moves those slabs like nothing. I accidentally set 4 slabs down with his hand between them and my raised tailgate. He just comply said “ umm yeah umm not good umm can you lift that.” Come to think of it he probably doesn’t like me. Lol 😂

Logs to Lumber is very satisfying. I made a chain saw mill based on Izzy Swan's plan a little over a year ago and have milled about 1000 bd ft of my own red and white oak. Many adventures along the way and a lot of learn. The lumber is spectacular. Each log milled is like Christmas morning.

make a habit of raising the blade after your cut and then come back. also I don't know why you need a winch to load logs just use your tractor to load on and off the mill

That is one nice mill! I imagine that particular brand is American made? I looked it up and it's a little pricey for me, around $5000 but nonetheless, a very nice mill. I would definitely buy that if it was in my price range.

I'd like to. I'm not sure if this is the final placement for it yet though. I basically live on the side of a mountain so I have to figure out smart grading so I don't have major mud and structure damage. I currently have an xl grill cover over the carriage but it's not the best solution. I feel like a Copperhead is going to bite me every time I take the cover off (rural piedmont with lots of good places for danger noodles). I'll figure something out though.

the choice of music gives a guy the feeling of impending doom. there are some improvements that can be made to bed for log positioning, but what i'm mostly curious about is how the thing has held up since you've bought it. chinese made machines have a notoriously short service life and are in general not very user friendly
@AnthonyBowman
@AnthonyBowman 4 года назад
For homestead style mills like this, why aren't the blades 2-sided, so you can cut in both directions instead of having to go all the way back to the other end to lower the blade and make another pass? I'm sure there is some reason for it, but I can't think of it.
@davehynes8240
@davehynes8240 4 года назад
There is a trust bearing at the back of the blade, like a standard bandsaw. One side needs to be a smooth to run along that bearing.
@dannydeetz6644
@dannydeetz6644 3 года назад
I was wondering how this was holding up? I like the design looks solid just not much info out there on them. How have parts availability been? Can you use 1.25"blade or do you have to run 1" blades?

I think "logger" is ranked pretty high if not the highest on the dangerous jobs list. Theres a lot of weight in the logs that needs to be respected. I've got a pretty good track record felling trees but did have one that defied what should have happened. It ended up fine, but it shook me a little. Definitely a job that deserves forward thinking and awareness. Thank you for reminding me!

What are some of the most valuable uses for cedar?
@wmwalkerco
@wmwalkerco 3 года назад
It excels at rot and insect resistance so its used in outdoor applications. Eastern Red Cedar is also known as Aromatic Cedar and used to line closets and blanket chests. It is quite soft though so I would be hesitant to make a table top out of it though people do

Hello Will. I enjoyed the build vid. But doesnt the situation with the 6x6 require at the minimum creosote soaked beams due to constant contact with the ground. What do you think the life span will be even of they are treated post timbers? If to do over again would this come into play or is the lifespan of these timbers sufficient. Myself I would want at least 10-12 urs for the footings. Harleymike/chicago
@wmwalkerco
@wmwalkerco 4 года назад
Hey Mike, the are pressure treated ground contact lumber. I originally bought them for a retaining wall that was in the ground for about 5 years until my wife didnt like it anymore. I yanked them out. No signs of deteriorating. Just a little muddy.

Maybe too late, perhaps not. Try to orient your tracks/mill across your hill/slope, then you can roll your logs down hill instead of across. Let gravity be your friend.
@wmwalkerco

Unfortunately this was the only spot that could accommodate both the Mill and my wife. It hasn't been too bad though. We'll see what I think after loading an Oak log instead of a Cedar.

I'm sorry for your loss. When you said your daughter and mother had cancer and were fighting an uphill battle to try and survive for just one more day. Then an absolute miracle happened they found a way to have a full recovery. They were getting stronger and stronger, then they were killed and eaten by a bear on the day they could finally stand on their own feet again. What could be sadder?

Why didn’t you use the forks on the tractor to load the log?
@wmwalkerco
@wmwalkerco 4 года назад
The log was pretty long and it was precarious and seemed more manageable with the peavy. Shorter logs (what I will likely be milling more regularly after this timberframe project) I think the forks would work well.
