I've tattooed OVER scars because HIGHLIGHTING them only serves as an vain procedure that pushes the idea of self-harm as a positive thing & hinders the real growth needed of the individual who holds them. Though, if it's surgical/pregnancy/weight gain or loss/"survival" scars - to its literal definition - that are being highlighted, I see no reason NOT to get creative. Hell, I'd love for Chrones patients with Stoma Bags to get a little design around where the bag sits; THAT'S the empowerment of Highlighting used properly, IMO.

No. This is the first time I’ve heard of tattoos highlighting scars. I always felt a little sad whenever someone wanted a tattoo over their scars and hide them, because I’ve always thought scars were so beautiful (though I understand that some scars hold painful and horrible memories, so I can’t say I’d blame them for wanting to overwrite them). In fact, I have a scarification, and I love it so much that I’ve thought about getting colour tattooed around it to highlight it and make it really pop.

Wow.. I've never thought of doing that with my scars. I have tons of deep scars all over my arms, I hide them everyday from people. I tried killing myself so many times and I thought I was a freak cause I cut and tried to kill myself. But now, I feel like I can show my scars and show how they are beautiful. To those who might comment on how I am doing, I'm doing well. As I have just gotten out of a recovery hospital. I am thankful to say I feel better and happier. Thank you for spreading mental awareness Refinery29. And everybody who is battling with their depression or emotions. It gets better, trust me.

I actually have a scar embracing tattoo and I love it! I got it a year after the tipping point when I almost needed stitches, and I knew I needed help. Three years later I’m still a work in progress and that’s ok. I got the tattoo when I was in college, broke , and it’s very minimal and I’d like to eventually go back in and add some mandala effects; it’s two koi fish circling in a yin and yang form and I think the mandala look would real complete it. That and a hollow semicolon are the only two tattoos I have and they mean the world to me. They mean strength, survival... and so much more. Excellent video and good luck on your journey!

Common conception is that embracing your scars and not trying to hide them is true confidence, which is true. But being able to look at your scars and remember the pain behind them, but still seeing the possibility for it to beautiful, even if if it's covered, is just as powerful. The fact that you can look at your scars and decide that, 'no, I'm not going to associate this with ugliness/pain, etc. I'm going to put a piercing there, and it's going to look beautiful because that's what I want to see because I am past this/moving on." Is the epitome of outward self-acceptance and confidence. words are hard so I hope you get what I mean. I hope you can get those piercings, but remember, if you don't like the new look, worse case is, you take them out. :) _It can't be perfected if it's already beautiful_
@ishallremaincalm

@@dkjcb3993 thanks for taking all that time to write this down, its beautiful. we expect to live life in a sloped rate, always getting better and getting more. but we simply don't, it's more periodic than we wish it to be, constantly experiencing the high and the low. it's hard adjusting to it. and we don't live it like chapters of a book, never quiet leave everyting behind. but we can choose to start the new chapter instead of waiting for it to happen on its own. not by rejection. and not always with acception. but simply by changing the point of view

I have such a hard time when it comes to self harm scars. They're either extreme or fairly "light" (maybe faded is a better word idk) but it's like there's not much "representation" in between. That aside, it's always nice to see people with sh scars represented at all. Whenever I find myself venturing into the sh communities (which are so toxic, seriously, stay out of them) and see just how many people do that shit it always feels weird to look on the outside and not really see any people with those scars in real life or (mainstream) media... So videos like this are always nice. That tattoo is really beautiful.

When I was like 11 I struggled with self harm. One thing I'd do is purposefully create scabs. Most were small, others not so much. Some went deep, some didn't. I have a ton of spots where it screwed up the pigmentation When I'm old enough I'm going to do something like this :)

I really like how the scars that are most visible are on the lions face. Its not only meaningful to her because her daughter is a Leo but lions are one of the fiercest animals in the animal kingdom. Just chucking out a thing I've learnt in therapy because it seems appropriate here and might resonate with someone: Shame is all about secrecy. It's a fundamental drive to hide who we are so that we are not rejected and cast out by everyone else. Confronting the secrecy can help with feelings of shame. I guess that's why it's so powerful to see this lady owning her scars. Seriously, good on her.

This is such a beautiful idea, I think embracing your scars, knowing that they can't just go away, and moving forward anyway is such a powerful message to send to people. The placement of the lion was just perfect too since some of the scars seemed to wrap across the lions face, so the artist couldn't have done a better job! She was incredibly steady-handed and her shading skills were flawless, I'd definitely love to work with her at some point if our lives allowed. So props to them both, they've definitely made me consider encorporating my scars into a design when I feel I've moved past this part of my life!

I just want everyone to know that it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to not be happy everyday. It’s okay to talk about not being okay. If you need to talk to someone talk to someone. If you think you need help get help. Your feelings are valid. Your emotions are important and matter. You matter. Please keep fighting. I know it’s hard to see anything good in such a dark place. Don’t ever let those dark voices make you believe you are nothing. I know you constantly hear that things are going to get better and it feels like it’s not, but it will. I know your current life situation might seem like hell and nobody might not understand how much pain you are in because of it. I know you might think you aren’t special or perfect. Things will get better though. I almost didn’t believe it would get better and so I thought about ending it multiple times. However, it gets better. Please don’t ver think you are worthless or don’t matter because you do. I’m here for you. I know you matter. Now I want you to know that you matter too.

Look for artist interpretations. There's some pretty good artists that change it up.

I have self harm scars too and I was always afraid of people seeing them but then I got a tattoo on my wrist and now I'm not so afraid. My scars are part of me and I don't want to cover them up. They show how much I've grown.

I remember reading something that said we have God as a father to provide us with ease this is why we should panick wen troubling situations bc all the troubling times that have came yr way are in the past now and this shows that no matter what God will always settle your situations... Me as a over thinker love this saying and hopefully u do to

I personally love my scars. I scar dark and obvious. I have one that is puffed up and looks more like a burn. I see no problem with covering them with tattoos, and I see no problem with highlighting them. Whatever gets you through life.

I have personally struggled with self harm for years now and am 4 years into my recovery. I have always said that I don’t want my scars covered by my tattoos and wanted them to be surrounded by art instead

I got a matching tattoo with my sister a few years back. It’s an infinity symbol with the word “sisters” in it. I had it done in one of my most used cutting spots as a promise to myself to not do it anymore.

TW: I’m 16 and I’m 9 months clean from my last self harm. I have this flame shaped burn on my hip from when I last hurt myself (I used a match). When I turn 18, I want to get it outlined and turn that scar into a little matchstick on my hip as my first tattoo and as a reminder that I don’t need to hurt myself to make me feel better, and that there are people who love me and care about me. If you are someone who is going through a bad time, or you’re feeling suicidal, please, I’m begging you, get help. There will always be someone in your life that cares about you, regardless of what you think. It will get better, I promise.

I'm getting a half sleeve in about a week and a half to cover a bunch of scares and I am so excited because I can start to move on. I made the mistake of thinking that i can deal with it on my own. Please talk to someone.
