I Got A Twitch Founder To Explain Old School Esports 

Shoutouts to my old boss @ Twitch Fishstix for showing up to share some of these moments. We didn't include Counter-Strike since I want to get a real old school CS expert to do a whole explanation of that on its own. My dad was an old tribes “pro” and the last part of this vid made me nostalgic for when my Dad had us play tribes ascend with him literally almost a decade ago

this was sick. as a late 90s kid who did not grow up playing video games, i missed out on a ton of these essential, foundational games. anything from the early '00s will get me to watch (i watch everything anyway, but still)

Honestly, i think the main one I’d wanna see is old Halo montages from the early 00s WCGs featuring the Ogre Twins cuz holy shit that’s what really got me into wanting to play games professionally

Early internet culture is home to so many amazing feats that largely go forgotten, so I'm really glad Atrioc is actually bringing light to these so that the next generation of zoomers know what the old school god gamers looked like.

I’m one of the few people that still plays tribes these days after hirez abandoned tribes: ascend. It’s amazing to see this being talked about in front of thousands of people after tribes has fallen into obscurity. I would kill to get more fps-z games like tribes in the mainstream.

Idk if he would be down but former twitch vp of partnerships John would gush over the TF2 6v6 pro scene occasionally on his old KBMOD podcast. It would kinda keep on theme of the old guard of twitch being rooted in early/smaller esports scenes.

Glad to see Quake and arena shooters getting some attention. Rapha still is playing Quake (Quake Champions now) and is still arguably the best player in the world. Former Twitch employee DJ Wheat commentates the official league, the QPL, on Saturdays alongside a few other commentators.

TRIBES YESSSSSSSSS my friends and I found tribes ascend about 3 years back on steam with a playerbase of like 10 people but still such an enjoyable game

God I loved playing Tribes while listening to Prodigy 3Kilos. Often just clicked right with the kind of skiing motion you needed. Also, something I loved (Though perhaps top players just dont need to use.): Tribes had a laser designator. Someone with a good eye firing the designator at something would allow any heavies carrying mortars (I think grenade launchers as well.) to see on their HUD the exact place to fire and hit the target. With a bunch of heavies and that designator you could really rain down some destruction.

Probably the most wild thing about tribes was the fucking huge maps. yeah you had a bunch of people out there but you're talking about a really serious gulf of space. that was probably the only game where it made sense to have to defend every angle on the little tower where the flag was, couldn't just park with your back to a wall and have a good shooting angle on anyone that could threaten it.

I fking loved Tribes 2 as a kid, and didn't know Midair was a thing. Excited to check it out.

I am pretty young, but old school shooters like this make me wish I was around when they were big. i just recently got into quake and i think its awsome, but the first time i saw tribes i was absolutely captivated.

Tribes is really cool, but it takes some dedication to learn how to go fast. Skiing does feel amazing once you get it down though.

Get Punch to breakdown csgo 2018 Boston major. You need to learn more about your boy Tarik’s cloud9 and their run through that major. Its one of the sickest NA esport moment ever and you’re homies with the mvp of that major. You gotta do a video on that! An idea: it’d be so sick if you could get Tarik to join you and punch and give commentary throughout punch’s presentation.

Tribes!!! I completely forgot Tribes existed!!! That was one of the first online experiences and despite it being laggy as all hell on the ps2 online it was still so much fun jetpacking and fighting thru the chaos.

Just gonna give a quick shoutout to the Team Fortress Two competitive scene. Stilling going strong after 15 years with some of the sickest movement and projectile aim in esports.

The method of using "screenshots" to make fragmovies have been used all the way into csgo, its a great way to require super high quality video, it just requires a lot of disc space

I used to play tribes a bunch back in like 2014 when it was in the smite launcher and it was so fucking fun. At that point in its life cycle they had designed it more around skiing but you still had to sink hours into getting good at it and holy fuck if you were good you felt like superman.

Seeing that crazy movement in Tribes reminded me of how quickly some people can capture a flag in Titanfall 2. Slide-hopping + stim abuse yields insane results.

The Tribes gameplay is an experience I really miss and absolutely needs some modern representation. Midair tried it's best back in 2019 but ultimately it wasn't ready. Midair Community Edition has been in the works for a couple years now and while it's still limited discord invite only, it looks really promising.
