I want to sincerely thank you for this because this was the motivation I needed. To give you some backstory, I studied Japanese in college. I made it up to the advanced class and was diligent but I fell off because of real life. And I was always so nervous to get back into it because I thought I'd suck so badly. But your tips/ strategies are great. So to avoid sounding presumptuous, you could say I had the opposite of the Dunning-Krueger effect where I tend to undervalue my skills with Japanese. Still, I do appreciate the advice and I'll put in my 100% to get to where I can be proficient in Japanese.

Dunning-Kruger effect applies to literally everything too (literally literally not figuratively literally lol). I experienced it last year with my writing when I started watching some Brandon Sanderson lectures on RU-vid and realized I didn't know nearly as much as I thought I did when it came to writing a story. But instead of the dip being a valley of despair for me, it was just more of a realization of ignorance and then a motivation for me to learn more because of how much I love the art of storytelling.

One of my reccomendations for my student and also for myself and any other person that studies Japanese or other language is an extension called "Language Learning with Netflix". It's so easy to use and you can learn on multiple levels by just watching you favorite show. Also, it's always better to watch something you are familiar with if your main objective is learning new vocabulary/grammar. Many times, until you can understand it entirely. That's why I smiled when you mentioned Harry Potter. I alse tried to read it in Japanese and it was a challenge, but still familiar. Thank you for telling us your tips on studying~ Hope to know more. Until then, 頑張りましょう!

I can agree wholeheartedly on the example of my English learning (I am Polish). I started learning English when I was 7. Five years later I had to make a direct call to native British English speaker for my parents business purposes. After the call I fell from 'mountain of stupidity' to 'Valley of despair' :) Sometime later I picked up Dragon Ball in English Funimation dub. I watched all the episodes of DB, DBZ and DB GT. I loved the show, have been checking some phrases and catchlines and whenever there was nobody around I was mimicking American accent and what the characters would say (especially Vegeta). Around 2 years later I watched Yuyu Hakusho dub with familiar voices but much more vivid vocabulary and just... better written script all around. At that point I have been switching to default browsing the internet in English. Looking for technical solutions, english speaking forums regarding anime discussions, almost anything. I already had noticed that actor played movies are way too hard to understand for me without subtitles but with anything voice acted (like Kung Fu Panda) I was already very comfortable. Also, all the time I was getting praise for my American accent I developed because of DBZ.... From time perspective it was very unrefined and forced, but it was necessary step to getting to where I am now, a bridge between American and British accent. In 2013 (four more years later, I was 19) I went to theater for LotR marathon. At one point during beginning of third movie I was falling asleep and caught myself that I could understand anything that was being said, without subtitles. Incredibly satisfactory and rewarding. From this day perspective it is a good mid level movie series, anything said there is very clear and easier to understand compared to most TV series and movies. The point of listening mastery I consider 2016 - 2017 (so already 15 years of learning) when I was already exposed to many Indian IT tutorials (accents!), people in Netherlands for student exchange who came from various backgrounds (Koreans, Americans, Brazilians, French, Chinese) - it was natural that by default communication there was done in English. I consider that point that I started being comfortable with more complex real life English like Game of Thrones or perhaps Dr House (though that one would be a struggle due to medical terms I am not that interested in). The takeaway from my experience - incorporate the language to your daily routine and you will start learning it passively. Sometimes it is better to settle for simplier language as stepping stone. Language, like programming, is not a skill to learn. It is in a way 'craftsmanship'. There is no single right or wrong way to perform certain task. You are given a set of multiple tools to complete what you are given to communicate and it can be done both in simplier and more advanced way. Just check 'Simple English' wikipedia articles, it is mind blowing how well some complex terms can be communicated with less nuanced and widely available words some would consider 'beginner level'. I consider myself very comfortable with English even if my speaking has gotten worse recently due to living back in Poland and working in Polish. I was taught at school by British English enthusiast who always stated that the peak is somewhere around Shakespear's works, which I am pretty sure I would really, really struggle with.

This is great advice for any kind of language learning, or any learning whatsoever. As a brazilian, I started studying english when I was about 13 yo, I had almost four years of a language course 2 times a week, and it actually took another 2 years after I finished it to really get into some kind of reading fluency and a couple more years for listening fluency. Unfortunatelly, my speaking is actually really bad since I could never get outside my country. Still, what really motivated me into learning english was videogames and TV shows. I play RPGs since I was 12, knowing no more than a couple words as "Start", "Save", "Fight", etc. Still, everytime I met a new word, I would deep into dictionaries and internet, translating every single new word, new context, new phrases, until I get used to specifics of the language. Once I grow older, I tried myself into english communities, forums, boards, etc, participating even if my english was not that good. Tbh, as a non native speaker, my english fails many times, but I still think anyone reading me can get exactly what I'm trying to express, and that's good enough for me. When I watched the entire seasons of The Office without subtitles for the first time, around my 20s, I was really proud of myself - it is a great sense of achievement once you get there, and really motivates you to keep going. Now I'm getting old, soon reaching my 29, and learning a new language might be kinda hard for me, but if you are young and love something, do not hesitate - find something you really enjoy and try as hard as you can to learn anything you can!

Make more about Japan please! I feel like this is going to help me a lot. I tried to read a volume in Japanese, gave myself a headache.

This videos is really nice and I think your tips can be applied to all languages. To my case, I have difficulties in writing English X) I can write little comments on videos or other things but I think that writing a story in English (not my Mother Language) is very difficult, i struggle every time and I never find my words, so I have to look at the dictionaries. Horrible. I think i will go back to my paper then :) Thank you for your advices. BTW : I love all your analysis :D It's very interesting and it give me tips on building my stories.

Good advice. I'm not a native English speaker (my first language is Portuguese) and the thing that helped me reach fluency the most was exposure. Reading manga in English, watching films or shows without subs, socializing in English forums and playing text-based games in them. Grammar is important, but at some point you gotta take a dip into the language itself being used so you can wire your brain to think in that language. Now I'm learning Spanish, and I'm trying to repeat the method. Recently I've read some manga translated to Spanish (instead of PT or ENG like I'd normally do).

Fantastic video, I'm sure this will help a lot of people even though I myself am not interested in learning Japanese. But these tips can also be used for learning other languages.

7:51 I'm doing something similar to properly track my game development studies. Literally an EXP Bar. I've drew a bar on a small notepad, which has at the moment an absolute value of 215. Every hour of studying equals *1* EXP. Not only that helps me track my progress, but also helped me figure how much time can I spend on studies before being completely unable to focus on the subject (3 hours is my limit). Eventually, I plan on trying to increase my limit by studying twice a day. If it weren't for my lacking attention span, constant feeling that someone might've messaged me and simply zooming out, I'd probably be starting my main project, but hey, everyone learns in their own pace.

Hey that's me when I seriously started improving my English skills. I'm a German native speaker and got my struggles with the language since kindergarden. The down moments in the learning curve are very frustrating and I was nearly quiting both but I got threw it and got better and better. I also experienced the same in my guitar carrier (12 years). It's very important to keep "fighting" and motivating yourself, or otherwise you waste your time as I did by wasting almost 3 years of my guitar lessons where I had 0 motivation.

Where are you from my friend? Nice tips yes. I also speak a lot of languages since I am on the road since my 20s, but I am starting to forget some since you need to practice every single week at least.
