Why is there no kissing in anime or manga? Or at least why is there so little kissing. And whenever there is, it always feels a bit awkward. I'm sure you have asked yourself this question before. I definitely have. In trying to answering this question, I dug deep into the cultural differences between Japan and the west and finally found the answer. Honestly I never minded the lack of kissing in anime or manga, because when It does happens it's very special. Also personally a quote from my favorite character had me think that there is more than kissing. "Then we don' kiss Rogue. Simple as that. Maybe thas' jus' fine right now for you an' me. I like these videos, One Piece is a master piece but I think its also really good to learn outside lessons and cultural differences as well as linking those back around to anime for better retention. I have noticed that from most of the shonen that I have watched or read, there are almost no romantic kisses. Of course there are non-romantic kisses like, Luffy and Reiju, Naruto and Sasuke, Naruto and Sakura(not really a kiss) just to name a few. The only romantic kiss in one piece was off panel, which was between Sanji and Pudding. And the only romantic kiss in Naruto was in a movie. To me a hug is more than enough to show affection and limiting kissing scenes makes it more impactful when there's actually one.

Hey, I enjoy a good romance story as the next person. The build up between the male and female main characters (or chosen same gender pairs people see, no judging) that leads nearly the end of the storytelling can be successful to execute with a kiss or deeper bond, leaving an impact after they passed all kinds of obstacles.

I think intermixing clips of Beastars is an interestingly good example for this given how otherwise violent and sexualized the series is, kissing even in the manga is reserved for very select moments.

Uh... The term "PDA" is not exactly an Asian thing. It's a very commonly used term in the United States as well (and likely originated from here). I heard the term a lot back in high school and middle school, mostly from teachers explaining how it isn't allowed in school. I'm extremely surprised that you haven't heard it before moving to Japan.

Going quite specific here but Crepes vs Cones for Ice Cream. Being from Washington State, and not Seatle I have never seen a place that Sold Crepes really. Flan/Cones/Milkshakes all sorts of other Ice cream options... but Crepes are the only option in anime normally. Although I found that an odd mixture of Housin sauce and Red Bean Sauce with Napoleon Ice Cream and Hershes chocolate sauce was surprisingly good and unique, I don't know Red Bean Paste and don't know how it tastes or what matches well with it. I figure they are Fish shape because not only is it "cute" but easy to taco shell a wrapper around it.

Pretty sure Europe is part of the west, but I've never seen that 'kissing starts the dating' stuff around here, just in American movies. I've mainly experienced the style described for Japan here, but that again just seems to describe the 'friend of friend' kind of relationship building. Maybe this Western style is just the American style instead?

I think the sense of humour is wildly different in Japan than in the west, especially with the whole perverted characters thing. So while most of the One Piece fanbase (somehow) hates when Oda shows Sanji being a pervert, He's laughing his ass off drawing these scenes.

I understand the point about cultural differences but I just don't think it applies here, instead it seems to come down to genre. Series in which romance is either a minor subplot or nonexistent usually don't have kissing for obvious reasons. However in series where the focus is on romance itself or it otherwise is a major factor in the plot this does not hold true. I quickly went through my list of favorite romances in anime and manga and almost all involved kissing at some point (including Kaguya sama) so it's not a matter of the exception proving the rule since it was the overwhelming majority. Maybe it also depends on which series you've seen as many battle shounen fans don't watch that many SOL and Romance anime to begin with.

Yeah idk which ones hes watching because the ones I watch have tons of kissing (not hentai, but romance anime like toradora and your lie in april)

The lack of romance and kissing in anime is one of the reasons I stopped watching it. I enjoyed it when I was younger but no so much now.

That's the exact opposite of me. I used to like romance and kissing when I was younger but not anymore.

@@inspiringer6418 well it’s just one of the reasons I stopped watching it. I was obsessed with anime for a long time but gave it up. Started preferring to watch tv shows with real actors and stuff. But I don’t even watch tv much anymore. It’s hard find to good shows I enjoy.
