If you think the Escalade ESV is insane, check out Caddy's new EV. It's 224 inches long, wider than a Hummer truck, will likely weigh 9,000 pounds and has the biggest front and back seats Caddy has ever built. Third row? Well, let's talk about that in the video. If you're looking for a 750 horsepower bonkers caddy with 450 miles of driving range that'll crab-walk, er, Cadillac Arrive, then this is the SUV for you.
Why do I mention the Hummer? Because this is not a gas Escalade with a battery and motor, this is a brand-new unibody Escalade built on the same platform that underpins GM's SuperTruck.
What powers it? Basically the same 246 kWh battery from the Hummer lineup (24 module Ultimum) with about 200 kWh of that usable for 450 miles of EPA range. The battery powers a dual motor setup (sorry, no tri-motor here) making 750 HP and 785 lb-ft.
The suspension features MagneRide dampers and active air springs to control the likely 9,000 pound curb weight. Want an idea of scale? Check out those wheels. They are 24-inch rims. Yep, 24s. But those aren't low profile tires, they are 275/50R24s. That's a 35-inch tire!
How long will it take to charge? Well, at home you'll gain 14 miles of range per hour with the included 240V charge cord. If you install a 100A circuit you could bump that to 37 miles of range per hour at 19.2 kW. DC charging? 100 miles of range in 10 minutes they claim at a 350kW CCS station. CCS? Yep. This will start with a CCS connector and will get NACS shortly thereafter. How fast will it charge on a Tesla Supercharger which should be natively supported at launch? We don't know for sure, but probably around 70 miles in 10 minutes, so a bit slower than CCS until Tesla rolls out their 1,000V stations.

The market for this isn’t “regular people” ferrying kids around, although it would work well. Where I live (coastal city) most Uber Black and other Black Cars are already Escalades, Tahoes, Ford Expedition. Three rows, tons of room for luggage. These will sell well for that market and will be nice and quiet when I’m being driven to/from the airport! Bravo GM!

Considering *gm* has one of the best infotainment systems on the market they’re able to rid themselves of apple CarPlay restrictions and business. I have no doubt that Cadillac and Google can develop a better user experience than apple CarPlay if they divert their attention solely to do just that. Have you seen the systems in the Lyriq, Escalade, etc. It’s a smart decision for this brand to make, despite what Tesla is doing.

3:01 GM has provided some guidance on this, as the capacity rating depends on whether they are using IEC or ISO rating procedures (this was true as far back as the Chevrolet Bolt EV with the 57 kWh versus 60 kWh debate). Personally, I defer to whatever is displayed in the cabin (which is IEC, I believe), so that would be ~212-213 kWh usable and ~219 kWh gross capacity. The other area where people get confused is when referencing the EPA documentation, but it is important to note that that documentation includes charging losses on 240 VAC charging. That "246 kWh gross capacity" is likely including those charging losses. 240 VAC charging losses are typically ~8-12%, which aligns the difference between 219 kWh gross capacity and 246 kWh of energy required to charge from empty to full on 240 VAC.

GM infotainment is actually quite good and has been for years. This makes me wonder if they can put stone (Like marble or granite) in the dash. I think it would look cool. Also that hood is super high, I love it. For anyone who says the towing does not matter because rich people don't tow trailers- they have RV's and Campers to tow so the tow rating will be important- along with range while towing. I know that in the 60's people would tow their Airstream or other camper with their Cadillac.

It's absolutely gorgeous! Very striking! If this is the Caddy, imagine the Tahoe and Yukon! The trickle down effect will be interesting to see! I think cars/Ev's like these are good to bolster competition, so no car company stays stagnant (although I feel like Toyota and Honda are getting there). And as crazy as this is, by doing this, it will eventually help engineers figure out how to reduce batteries and give longer ranges. You can't figure out all that without starting somewhere. It's crazy to think that a company can jump into the ev game with 500 miles of range. Cell phones took so long to evolve, and were more exclusive.

The battery in this is equivalent to just 6 gallons of gas or 5.5 gallons of diesel. Yet it goes up to 450 miles per full charge. I'd say that equates nicely with about 15 mpg from the gasser on average with a what 30 gallon or so fuel tank? 👍🏻 Weight will come way down as legacy figures it out with the next gen evs. Using structural pack's, castings, integrated motor&inverter unit's etc. Just look at the ford lightning for proof. It weighs less than a rivian r1t and is actually larger. A base pro lightning weighs 400-800# less than a v8 raptor r or ram trx weighs with fuel&fluids in them. And only 300#- more than a crew cab hybrid f-150 with fuel does.
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 11 месяцев назад
@@4literv6 remember though that range estimate is based on a mixed drive cycle. I think it’s safe to say that pure highway range will dip into the mid to high 300 range (360-380). And while it’s certainly more efficient from an energy use standpoint versus an ICE, there is no hiding the amount of materials needed to achieve that range and performance. Also I believe a base Lightning Pro is a touch heavier than the Raptor R. I think both are around 6k lbs but the Pro is a bit over and the R is a bit under that. And just for reference my F-150 5.0 gets over 20mpg highway, so with the 36 gallon tank can get over 700 miles of real world range (I’m often over 500 miles of range towing my light car hauler setup). Pros and cons to both methods but at this time I don’t think an EV pickup would be able to suit my use case. Like you said hopefully things do improve though.
@4literv6
@4literv6 11 месяцев назад
@@ALMX5DP 36 gallons to only manage 700 miles in its most efficient mode? Kinda pathetic really as each gallon of gas you guzzle down is 33.7kwhs per gallon in total energy burned up. A lightning has less than 3 to less than 4 gallons worth of gas in total onboard energy. Then we gotta find some more oil, drill some more crude oil out of the ground using water energy and chemicals in a giant drill rig. Ship it to a refinery, store it. Refine it burning even more energy using some more water and chemicals. Then ship the refined junk again by truck train or rail, or pump it through massive pipelines using more electrical energy and motors. Just so you and everyone else who love gas can burn it leaving behind noxious fumes&chemicals plus particulate pollution. Yeah let's keep doing that forever. 😏 Vs we mine the materials once then shove em in an ev pack which is used for a decade or more in just the vehicle itself. As ev pack warranties are 8-10yrs depending on the state you live in? Switching to 10yrs after 2025 and 120,000 miles of coverage for all evs. After that the cells can serve again in a ev swapped car or for grid use as reduced capacity isn't as critical there. When it's truely reached the end of its life? We grind em up at 90-95% recovery of the starting point materials rate. So we can make another pack out of em. I know which one I choose. 👍🏻 It's a shame we have so many mis informed people like you in this world. Even worse most are older males other's look up to and listen to. Who are already successful and should be moving the U.S. even FASTER onto evs. Which keep more $ in the us economy and local hands. Every dollar spent on fossil fuel refueling has over .60c go outside the U.S. economy. Vs $1 spent on charging an ev on average sees over .70c stay in the U.S. economy. So evs support local factories, local recyclers, local energy production. And can be easioy refueled daily where we live and work right now. And require less maintenance and less wearable parts over the lifetime use. Seems like a no brainer if your iq is above 100. I ran a service shop here in ATL so don't even start on the maintance bit. I know exactly what it takes to keep an ice car otr as it ages and maintained at a state approved facility vs evs. I haven't done nothing to our 2020 bolt in 3+year's of ownership and 22,000 miles now except 1 set of wiper blades, 1 cabin air filter change and 3 tire rotations. 😎

13:25 I think you might be overly conservative here. The Chevy Silverado EV will give us an early indication of how close GM's range estimates are, but based on the Cadillac LYRIQ exceeding its EPA combined range at 70 mph, I would expect the Escalade IQ's highway range to be very close to its combined EPA range estimate (at least under typical conditions).

Thank you Alex for this very informative video - great review. As for this being a vehicle that we need to move people to EVs in general, I think it would very beneficial to do some sort of analysis to determine how many zero emission miles you need to drive this vehicle to make up for the additional greenhouse gasses emitted during the manufacturing of it. For the sake of simplicity I would be willing to assume that the electricity consumed by this vehicle is coming from non-fossil fuel sources (which, of course, won’t be the case in the real world). I ask this not to knock EVs at all, but to just make clear that vehicles of this sort are not helping the climate crisis and shouldn’t be labeled as such.

Worry about when it’s competition will be available because there currently isn’t any. *gm* has brought at least 6 out of the 10 _Ultium_ EVs revealed to production. 3 of them now being Cadillacs. Bespoke EVs brand new from the ground up that share nothing with their ICE counterparts. Of course it will take time until production is fully ramped up.

Agreed, GM really needs to bring back the budget Cadillacs, except style them so the younger crowd will actually buy them and they won't be perceived as poppop / nana cars again (no more brown boxes!). They can start with a new Grand National and a Riviera and build the brand from there!

I’ll never be able to afford one but I think GM removing CarPlay/Android Auto is from their electric cars is a joke. It’s 2023, people want to connect their phone. They have a nice software experience and I think the buyer of something this expensive won’t care about the subscription services they’re trying for, but then the Equinox EV and cheaper vehicles come out, normal buyers aren’t gonna want to pay a subscription every month and not having CarPlay is gonna be a huge decision factor for them.

Or 10 Chevy Volts, that's 9 more people who can charge at home or work who will be running around town essentially emissions free (except for a road trip or a really long shopping day). Trying to find a gen 2 Volt at a decent price these days is like trying to find that last hen's tooth. I even after putting 110k km on mine I can sill sell it for more than what I bought it for used years ago. The next closest car in terms of proper limited resource management is essentially sold out, the new Prius Prime. Nothing wrong with Tesla, it would have made no sense for them to develop an ICE division just for the tech to get phased out in a decade. But all the legacy automakers should have jumped on the HEV/PHEV thing, and governments should have mandated they have a 100 km EV range to get a tax credit, or better, a federal/state rebate. (HEVs for folks who can't charge daily and PHEVs for folks that can).

Good idea, but like other Cadillac projects in the past, if they try and go too far without realistickly looking at the market for which they plan on selling into, their ego will get in the way again clouding their judgment. Pricy while not having all the features that even in the base gas model let alone their competitors have standard.

I see a lot of mistakes in this escalade, and considering the price hike, I think they will suffer in the long term. The gas/diesel yukon denali ultimate is easily the best luxury suv GM has to offer, the gas escalade was already going the wrong direction and this is just doubling down on bad decisions. Hopefully whoever is in charge of the escalade program is promptly removed from their position, but we know that'll never happen. The proportions are awful, its an escalade its supposed to be big and mean and own the road. the specs being smaller on the inside while bigger on the outside, it weighing 50% more, interior has a higher step in height as a unibody, lower ground clearance. That giant screen is going to be a nightmare, it better have a "dark mode" and a whole lot of options for removing background light as the eye strain is going to be rough. To me this is a downgrade across the board from the gas one and I'm sad this is where the future of cars is going. This looks like a blob with some vertical lines. I'd never even guess it was a caddy outside of the front end, honestly I'd guess it was an electric range rover. Actually this whole vehicle feels very LR to me, I wonder if with the price hike thats the intended competition. Its sad because the escalade has always been for a different kind of buyer. I really do wonder what GM is afraid of with all these rash changes. The wagoneer and likely navigator will get their EV versions on converted platforms like the lightning, so why abandon ship on a platform they spent so much to bring up to speed with independent rear suspension and tons of other upgrades. Not including smartphone integration is a huge misplay on their part and I'm sure will be added in later when its complained about. Toyota was forced to put carplay/aa into their cars for competitive reasons and bmw trying to make it a subscription thing got memed on so hard for it they ditched the business model and just integrated it. GM would have to have, quite simply, a better operating system than carplay/AA that integrates into peoples phones better, and with how closed system apple is, will never happen on the iphone side. Only one getting away with this is tesla and its due to the people who would buy elon's shit on a plate if it was tesla branded. Overall I hope this thing flops, I really don't want it to be the future of cars. Maybe the goal is to push people out of wanting to own cars by making them super expensive piles of garbage?

The dimensions are in line with what people expect from a Cadillac Escalade, but we really need to engineer our way out of these ultra heavy EVs. Yes, batteries weigh a lot, but these things are getting downright dangerous to have on public roads. SUVs that weigh as much (or more) as Heavy Duty trucks is a bridge we shouldn't be crossing IMO...not that anyone cares about my opinion 😅
