I Got Hands On With Volvo's Sexy New EX30, Volvo's Most Affordable New EV

On sale on 2024 as the 2025 Volvo EXC30, the new entry level Volvo has a lot going on. It'll be one of the fastest Volvo models even in base trim. 268 HP RWD will be standard with a 5.1 second 0-60 run while the dual motor model drops that down to 3.4 seconds thanks to a whopping 422 ponies. The interior is Scandinavian Chic with a focus on sustainability, recyclability and low emissions. Volvo says in fact that the EX30 will have the lowest carbon footprint of any model they have ever produced. More interesting? The base price seems oddly low. It'll be about $35,000 starting or about $36,500 after destination. That's less than a 2023 Lexus UX hybrid and significantly less than a Genesis GV60. Mercedes EQB? Way, way more expensive. Clearly there are tradeoffs, like only one set of window switches and only a central LCD, but I think I could live with that...

Agreed. I wish they'd make it mandatory for the DRL to go out on whichever side the turn signal is blinking. I think they're more visible to others when they don't have to compete with a DRL. I'm not sure if that would be such a great thing at night though. 😋

@@ElroyMcDuff Just about every vehicle with DRL LED lights will shut off and then do just the amber. I did see a 2023 or very new GMC Sierra not do it. The law simply states that if your DRL is brighter than the signal, it has to turn off. But that amber light was very bright so they probably did it that way.
@ElroyMcDuff
@ElroyMcDuff Год назад
@@sprockkets It does seem to be pretty common but it's not 100% mandatory, that's all I was getting at. The turn signal is MUCH more visible when it doesn't have to compete with another light. I agree with Alex re: amber turn signals in the rear. I think they're move visible when they're not just flashing the same color as the brake lights.

I wished Volvo had included at least a small instrument display on the driver's side (e.g. similar to VW's ID.4 instrument display) instead of following Tesla with the single large touchscreen on the middle console. Are the buttons on the steering wheel capacitive as well? Backlighted? The EX30, as I understand, is a twin and shares the same platform to the Zeekr X and the Zeekr X does have a driver's instrument cluster.

@@smtry6541 It's a Chinese car, but it was designed and kitted out by Volvo in Sweden. I trust you'll not have to mess with it more than two, three times a year if set to auto. So not really an issue. In fact, I have an Ioniq 5 which has a bunch of buttons and separate AC controls. They are somewhat useful, but tbh I rarely use them. The car does almost everything by itself, lights, wipers, AC, seat heater/ventilation, heated steering wheel, everything. And it does it well. On the motorway it even accelerates/decelerates if the speed limit changes, it keeps save distance, brakes, even steers itself. The few things I want or need to do myself can be done from buttons on the steering wheel. Car reviewers always mess about in the infotainment. In reality you sit in a car like this for halve a day to set everything up when you first get the car, then fine-tune a bit for the first two, three weeks and after that you're done, if the system is any good. I get in my car, put it into Drive, done. If I want to navigate somewhere I push a button on the steering wheel and tell it "navigate to XY," done. It even plans the charging stops if need be. Cars have gotten really good, EVs in particular.

Despite the usual ignorance by some commenters who are mistakenly calling this Volvo car "Chinese," it's great to see Volvo keep a certain continuity of design/content in their generations of cars. If you're familiar with the generations of Volvos, you can see how they mature and evolve but usually carry over some element of the previous generation. Put this car next to an XC40 and you can see the evolution of this design from the XC40. Inside, the dashboard, though deleting the instrument display, has the same layout of the XC40 but it is modernized. The materials are now more varied and interesting. There's more color in the interior rather than the rather charcoal, dark appearance in the XC40. The door panels have been simplified and modernized. The trash bin is in a new place but still there. The EX90 also has many design cues from the XC90 but it is more modernized, streamlined, and quite Scandinavian minimalistic like Volvos have been for decades. There is no Geely design in this car whatsoever. There is a Geely platform. And about that "Geely" platform, Geely "plucked" a Swedish engineer by the name of Kent Ove Bovellan to do the chief engineering of that platform. So, even Geely has a lot of Swedish content in their cars. Buying the European brands helped Geely get some great tech. But they haven't dissolved the Euro brands, Lotus and Volvo, they've actually enhanced and expanded them. The brands still do the design, most engineering, road testing, crash testing where they always have in their respective countries. So no, these aren't Geely cars with Volvo or Polestar or Lotus badges slapped on them. Of course there is cost and tech sharing, but each brand has the autonomy to do their own thing and have the ability to share resources to cut cost. That makes them more international than Chinese, though yes, Geely's funding is through China as it is based in China. Anyway, Volvo did a good job with this car with two exceptions. They didn't need to delete the instrument panel nor did they need to delete the buttons for the rear window switches. Otherwise, this is a very Volvo car in the tradition of Volvo yet modernized to move the company forward. It'll be somewhat affordable as an entry point to Volvo.

Volvo themselves already showed at the most efficient trim it's 26.5kwhs per 100 miles of range in consumption. So in no way is a 64kwh useable pack going to return the 260-275 miles epa Volvo has hinted at and everyone is naively claiming as fact. I'm very curious as a relative has a reservation done the first day on this. What the prices really are once they open U.S. ordering next spring or summer? And what the actual epa comes back as. My bet has been 225miles max for the awd trims and 235ish for rwd er trims. A leaked price sheet also shows 35-55k pricing range for the U.S. with the top awd trims going for 52-55k. Which is of course the trims Volvo brags about and gives everyone to test or review, awd performance pack with the big wheels, glass roof, Sound bar etc. 😏

Cool car and great review, Alex. Unfortunately, the rear legroom (if that matters to you) is abysmal; just 32.3 inches, according to Volvo. All 2024s will work with NACS with the included Volvo adapter so it depends on which adapter you want. If you get the 2025 calendar year version (2026 MY) then you’ll need a CCS to NACS adapter and a J1772 to NACS adapter. Honestly adapters are just a way of life. Public L2 charging is by and large J1772 and by location there are more CCS stations (small numbers of plugs) than Tesla Supercharger stations. NACS will be the preferred road trip plug, but in-city L2 or low speed DC charging is more likely to be CCS for a while.
