I got *HIGH* just from watching Alice in Wonderland.. Reaction/ FIRST TIME WATCHING Johnny Depp 

So... what's this movie all about??

i know people dislike these darker alice in wonderland retellings from burton, but i absolutely love them! i think the casting is great and the story has some unique twists to them; the sequel was also awesome!

This was the first and only Tim Burton movie to make $1 billion dollars at the box office. I remember seeing parts of the movie on the Disney Channel a few years ago and it's pretty impressive.

Johnny Depp, what a legend.

When my daughter played the Mad Hatter in a school play she prepared for that role by watching all Alice movies that were available. She liked this version the most. And became a little Johnny Depp fan because of it too. (She hadn't watched "Pirates" yet.) She actually LOVES the second movie even more. (She is now 14 years old.)

Alice in Wonderland has such a special place in my heart. I was obsessed with the animated movie as a kid. Then, I fell in love with the book. I still listen to it as a way to fall asleep. When this movie came out I was estatic! I love it so much! The whole story was such a comfort to me as someone who was, and still is, very out there and essentric. Having this be her all grown up helped the story and the meaning stick with me bc I was the same age as her and going through the same things. Tim Burton killed it with this one!

Fun Fact: the Actor who played the Knave of Hearts - Stayne was also George McFly from Back to the Future movie it blew my mind when i realized that

The Alice through the looking glass is like a squeal and a prequel and shows what lead to this movie. I recommend it even if it's not for everyone. I also recommend Howl's Moving Castle!

My favorite thing about this movie is the reveal, about Alice's recurring dream, which explains why this movie is NOTHING like the book! It answers the question of what happens after Wonderland, and Can you go back?

'Around the bend' is a common phrase in the UK, meaning mad/crazy.

This movie is mainly about Alice finally running her own life and finding herself. Returning to Wonderland helped her see that she had that strength and power within all along. It's an incredible movie.

Through The Looking Glass (the second film for this) is actually really good imo. It not only continues the story for everyone, but you get to see their origins as well. I won't spoil too much, but I think you'll really like it if you enjoyed this first installment. :)

Number one, The reason why the whole atmosphere of this whole thing is dark is not because Tim Burton is uncapable of making bright colorful atmospheres, but it’s because he wanted it to make it look like as if the red queen took over everything so everything went to bad. In the second movie because the red queen is not the queen anymore in the second movie it’s a lot more bright and lovely, I highly suggest you see that movie. Secondly, the reason why it’s not like the original Disney movie is because Tim was trying to make it a lot more like the original book, which in my opinion was a fantastic choice, there was so much that the original Disney movie have left out, that and this time. It’s supposed to be years after she visited wonderland for the first time. Like this would be her second time visiting Wonderland. Which is why a lot of the characters in this movie looked nothing like the original Disney version, he was going for the book version. And just probably my favorite detail of the whole thing is the fact that the people she meets outside of wonderland like the real people were kind of boring at the wedding are supposed to be the counterparts of people in wonderland. The guy that she was going to marry actually supposed to represent the Jabberwocky in the way she defeated it, the two twins are you supposed to be twiddle dee and twiddle dum counterparts, The mother of the guy she was going to marry is supposed to represent the red queen which is why she is so snotty and rude. And the husband of her is supposed to be the counterpart of the blue Caterpillar. Just a lot of details that not a lot of people realize, very much apologize for the long comment

The first time I watched this I fucking CRIED when Hatter said "Fairfarren, Alice." I knew what it meant immediately and I was not okay for like 10 minutes afterwards 😭💔

I used to have the same nightmare over and over as a kid. my dad stops to get gas. he leaves me in the car. the car starts to roll backwards, faster and faster with me trapped inside. sometimes I fall off a cliff. sometimes into a ditch. but i was always scared of being taken away from my dad by something i couldnt control

It's worth remembering that through the first part of the movie, Stayne never sees Alice. He knows the others are trying to bring her to Underland, he knows what she looked like as a five year old, but he never saw her with the others. So it makes sense she would be able to get away with being Um. Also, I love how this movie expands Wonderland/Underland. The characters have names, not just a title based on what they look like (e.g. White Rabbit). There's politics, culture, celebrations, and locations that aren't just 'So-And-So's House'. You feel like this is a world of its own.

If you're serious about wanting to know why the red queen has such a big head (literally), you might want to watch the sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass. It's an interesting story, even if it doesn't match the book. Its also gives a little background as to why she's so touchy and protective of her tarts.

This movie brings me both happy and sad nostalgia. It was the first Tim Burton movie I saw, but it was the last truly successful work of his. For whatever reason, from that point onward he started gradually fading into obscurity. Unlike Charlie and the Chocolate factory, almost 90% of this movie is CG. But Tim Burton wouldn't be Tim Burton if didn't find a way to still bring the tangible practicality into the process. And it is a testament to the mastery of their craft by people involved seeing how well the effects have aged. Also, he rolled the big guns for this one: almost every character with more than a few lines is played by an english cinema and television legend. It's hard not to recognise Alan Rickman as Absolum, but there are also such big names as Stephen Fry (Cheshire Cat), Charlie Sheen (White Rabbit), Crispin Glover (Stein the Knave of Hearts) and fricking Christopher Lee himself made a cameo as the Jabberwock.

Alice in Wonderland is actually a really old Fairytale! It's honestly just a fever dream which was created for children and over time (people verbally sharing it) it became a lot more developed and an actual story. It's crazy but pretty cool. Nobody really knows if the Wonderland actually exists 👀

I've had recurring dreams before. Sometimes even continuing the story from one dream into the next for several nights.

There was a video game sequel to the original story, American McGee's Alice. Alice is in her 20s I think. Her house burns down and whole family dies. She goes crazy and ends up in a mental hospital, then goes back to Wonderland but everything is dark and twisted.

The guy that helps the Red Queen Stayne who wears the eye patch is the guy that played George McFly (Crispin Glover)in the first Back to the Future. I love this movie.

The second movie on it "behind the mirrow" is great too! It will gives more answers of what happened in red queens childhood that maked her so angry mad & mad hattest childhood too, you will understand bit more about that all backgrounds of them^^.

If you liked the Red Queen in this film; wait until you see her on Through The Looking Glass. Burton really fleshing out her character so much more, and we get a back story into why she's the way she is.

The thing to remember with this movie is that it is a sequel to the animated Alice in Wonderland. And yes as some of the other comentors mention the sequel to this is also well done.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory came out in 2005. Alice in Wonderland in 2010. She fears ugly grandchildren...woman! Look at your son! There is no coming back from that. So many young women in that era had arranged marriages. Not a fun time. The women were expected to produce an heir and sit around the house doing 'housewife things' while the men met with their mistresses regularly. I love this girl's hair.

This movie, Edward Scissors Hands and Sleepy Hollow were made actually to enjoy with brownies / mushrooms.

You are exactly right! In the book, Alice is just hanging out and falls down the rabbit hole. The original animated Alice In Wonderland is much closer to the book plot. I think this is more just a movie inspired by the aesthetic or the… concept… of Wonderland.

I read on Internet that the Cheshire Cat's ability is inspired by the Cheshire cheese, what has the form of a cat and is eat by begin by the tail and finish by the smile. I don't know if you remember of the animated movie, but the little song the Cheshire Cat sings is also the Jabberwocky poem. If you like the Red Queen and have some questions about her, all the answers are in the sequel " Alice Through the Looking Glass " and trust me you'll not see that coming.

This movie is absolutely amazing. I actually feel like it was made just for me because of two very personal reasons: 1, Beetlejuice was my introduction to Tim Burton and I was just a child when I saw that. I grew up with that movie and I found a comfort in it. I have always been the black sheep of my immediate family and that movie helped me accept that being weird is perfectly fine, and actually made me grow closer to my older cousin who is the youngest (and fellow black sheep) on her side of the family and she was, like almost literally, the spitting image of Winona so she was like my Lydia bff growing up and we supported each other’s weirdness. She is still to this day the best family member I have and the only one I am actually super close with. Finally reason 2: The book Alice in Wonderland changed my entire life when I read it in middle school. I already liked reading a bit before that book, but that book really sang to my soul and made me LOVE reading. It was a truly magical experience for me and now I read almost anything I can get my hands on when before that book I was extremely selective. So when Tim Burton, my favorite director of all time, decided to make Alice in Wonderland… BAM. Instantaneous chemistry and immediate love for the film. I was shocked at first because it wasn’t a retelling of the book, but it was in fact a sequel to the book and tells of her adventure as an adult. So of course I was in love again with Burton’s ingenious take on the story. I just adore this movie and the sequel, though the sequel is much harder for me to watch knowing it was the last film Alan Rickman ever worked on and actually passed during production so many of his scenes were cut and his part shortened. It however does deal with acceptance of death and accepting that time is forever moving forward and not something to be fought but embraced, so it’s also bittersweet as well. I honestly cannot fathom how anyone can not love this movie. The casting was phenomenal. The CGI was extremely well blended. The effects are just amazing in general. Burton never fails to set a mood and it goes so well with how weird the book is. Seriously the best director to ever do a live action Alice movie

I love the sequel. It’s my absolute favorite movie. I highly recommend it. It has a slightly less dark tone, but it goes into the backstory of Underland and really helps you dive deep into the Hatter’s history. I don’t know what other people think, but I love it and I think you’d like it too.

The chronicles of Narnia by BBC in the 1980s have their own version closer to the book than the new one. I saw the 1980s ones before I saw the newer ones and was always a fan.

I’m half way but I just had to say, I’m glad you were having fun with this one. The British accent was top notch! haha 😂 As for the film, I much prefer the original cartoon…the overall vibe felt a bit more mysterious and curious. I prefer it aesthetically too because it felt less messy?? I’ve never been a massive fan of Alice and wonderland but I do like the themes about dreams and the subconscious. In this version it’s clear that Alice is escaping the restrictions of high society life (the rules, the expectations). The general theme of madness speaks a lot to that. What’s considered “mad” is perception. Alice talking about the corset at the beginning sums that up in a nutshell. She is considered “mad” for not conforming, but then if you follow blindly without question because society tells you it’s “right” then maybe the conformists are the mad ones? This film has deep themes and I always find the interpretations interesting… Also, I’ve never read the book but I love the quote: “How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.” It’s like reality is built around logic and it’s what’s considered “real” or true” but what really is true? Why is imagination or dreams less true? Why is it when we dare to dream or step outside the lines it’s considered crazy? Doesn’t everything begin in the mind?…Anyway, I’ll finish the highlights. Not a fan of Burton but I’m curious to see the ending :)

“Alice the Jaberwockey Slayer” just really makes me want to see Buffy fight the Jaberwockey 😅 P.S. The mouse from Narnia is Repicheep

*for anyone who calls the animated version the "original": the "original" is the novel ('alice's adventures in wonderland') and the sequel that also gets adapted; 'alice through the looking glass' by lewis carroll. the animated disney film is the first adaptation and both tim burton films are the second/third adaptations. one of my favourite scenes from this film is when johnny (as the hatter) recites 'jabberwocky' in a brilliantly executed glaswegian accent*

I love this story in general, but when I was young after reafing the book, I would watch this movie every year, I got so into it that I started to have this same dream multiple times where I was little alice wondering around Red Queen's Castle, the same corridors always had a different ending somewhere else!

His makeup artist in this movie was next level how his makeup / whole face literally changes with his mood.

I love how this movie, although being an adaptation is one of the ones that doesn't resembles to the original book, yet the people doesn't care because the rarer the movie the better

So in the end when they say goodbye, Alice and the Hatter were originally written to kiss. I believe it was cut because one or both of the actors were uncomfortable with a kiss between two with a considerable age gap, but maybe I'm wrong and it was for a different reason. Of course that's a fair reason and I respect that but hnnnnn that would've been so cute 🥺💕

I love this movie. I am crazy about Alice, I have 17 different versions on dvd, but this is my dream! Tim Burton is my favorite movie maker, Johnny Depp is my favorite actor and Alice is my favorite story in the whole world! The music is by Dany Elfman who does most of the movie score from my favorite movie soundtrack! You made me laugh a lot! I am glad you enjoyed it!

I love seeing the tree of the dead from Sleepy Hollow when Alice first walks out the small door. I recognized it right away in the theater and it always makes me happy, I loved that movie too!

This made me love real life versions of the cartoons even more. The imagination, the dialogue..it's all just great. My family and I are attending a "Clue" style game in a few months where we have to "free alice" with clues we are given. Costumes are a plus and extra points. I'm either choosing the smoking caterpillar or a shoutout/inspiration to Jefferson Airplane and their "White Rabbit". -Amber

Hi Thor, just want to say THANKYOU for this movie reaction! I love this movie so much... To answer some of your questions: Coleen Atwood is the costume designer on the majority of Tim Burton's film! So yeah, same team ;) The movies don't really follow the books, because the two Alice novels do not have a real story: it's only Alice who comes to Wonderland and meets a bunch of characters, before moving back. They are mostly language game (Lewis Carroll was a logician and really interested on how the language work and social conventions, implied meanings etc.) So the movies take some parts of the two novels. And you SHOULD definitely watch Alice Through the Looking-Glass, the sequel of this movie! It's not a Tim Burton's movie but it is GREAT! Anne Hathaway as the White Queen is perfect in this movie, her character really unfolds (this kind of deranged grace that curbs a kind of a madness...) You also discover a new character, Time, which is a really great character. Also the movie is more colorful than the 1st, now that the Red Queen has been defeated. So yeah, definitely take a look! Both Alice 1 and 2 are my favorite movies of all times. I've discovered the 1st one, when it came out, when I was an ill-at-ease teenager, escaping in my imagination to forget the problems of the real life. Each time I watch it, I'm sad when Alice comes back to the real world, I never understood why she doesn't stay with the Hatter. That's why I've been really touched by your interpretation of the movie, at the end ofyour video: it means a lot for me me. I think it's exactly why I loved this movie so much and why it is still so important to me today. It's really a kind of "Bildungsmovie"... This is a reinterpretation BASED on the Carroll book. The original Alice was a child who saw a white rabbit in a waistcoat and followed him to a hole among a tree's roots. Also, the original Alice did not meet the Jabberwock; it was only a poem she reads. And Wonderland never expected an 'Alice'; she only happened onto the place after falling down the rabbit hole. (Note: this is where the concept of 'going down a rabbit hole' comes from.) This version of the story uses some of the same characters as the original story (and adds others), but Tim Burton has them doing very different things than they did in the original. The Red Queen is not playing golf. Like in the original book, the Red Queen is playing croquet with live flamingos and hedgehogs. In the original, playing cards bend over to make the hoops the croquet balls get knocked through. The litany of hats actually ARE real hat names. "Alice laughed: "There's no use trying," she said; "one can't believe impossible things." "I daresay you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. I find it interesting that in the original script the hatter and Alice were in a romantic relationship throughout a few moments in the film. I dislike the looking glass sequel but this film carried just the right amount of gritty wonder, and charm. I miss it honestly. Burton was brilliant here.

Love this reaction! The sequel is Alice Through the Looking Glass. It was directed by James Bobin but he created it in collaboration with Tim Burton. It has a very different aesthetic, and to tell you the truth, it wasn't received well by critics. I can understand people not liking the film as it's so different to the first. But my personal opinion is that Alice Through the Looking Glass is genius. I would recommend watching it. And now I want to go and watch Through the Looking Glass again :)
