The reason Victor agrees to stay is because he is too late for Victoria, who has been married to someone else. There is nothing now left for him in the land of the living, so he figures perhaps he can at least try to make Emily happy, after all she has been through (and later, having given his word, he is fully prepared in all honor to keep it). But the fact is, it is Victoria he truly wants to be with. He tells her as much; whereas even after bonding with Emily over the piano, he never once says anything like this to her. And they belong together: they have a very similar outlook, personality and temperament; that they are counterparts is suggested even in their names. Colorless and boring as the world of the living is, they can be content there if only they have each other. Yes, Emily is amazing, and she deserves SO much more than she ever got, and it's tragic she never did; but ultimately the bottom line is that she could never have found peace in someone else's stolen happiness.
@tararocksong5085

That’s the lesson Emily learned the hard way. She had to find peace in herself in order to be set free from all that pain and heartbreak from Lord Barkis’s betrayal.

I like to refer to this movie as the one where Jonny Depp has to choose between the girl with a personality and the one with a pulse lol. It's a little bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. I still like this movie though
@StoryMing
@StoryMing Год назад
@@brodericksiz625 Victoria is a very different person than Emily, but she most certainly does have a personality. We only catch small glimpses of it because she does not get as much screen time, since this is not her story; but it is definitely there. If only we had the time to explore her character a bit further, I guarantee she would be FAR from the boring bland nobody that so many seem to take her for.

I always saw that blue butterfly at the start as a representation of Emily's life that was taken away by Barkis, as the butterfly was set free by Victor (as she was later on by him) and swatted at Barkis (whom killed her)

Fun fact: the stop motion animation in this film is so good, some people were convinced it was actually CGI. And Tim Burton was ridiculously offended by this, because he's proud of the art of stop motion animation, and all the effort that goes into it. So much so, that when he made Frankenweenie, he actually held back on making it look good ON PURPOSE so people could still tell that it was stop motion animation

Yessssss one of my fave movies ever. I may be biased because my name is Emily, but yes I was “rooting” for Emily too. For some reason when it came out, it didn’t get received well, perhaps due to unfair comparisons to Nightmare Before Christmas. To me, it’s a completely different story and beautifully done. Not expected at all, story-wise, and gorgeous to look at. So many fun details too… Did you notice the bell guy was shaped like a bell? 🔔 My favorite scene is the piano duet! I don’t know why more people don’t watch it, it’s great.

And the score is really good, very creepy. i've just recently discovered your channel through buffy (my favourite show) and i am so happy to see you covering this, my favourite movie. i just wanted to comment to chime in on the blue butterfly (which i have a tattoo of!) because to me, it represents learning and growing/moving on/closure. at the start of the movie, victor has the butterfly trapped, then he draws it and lets it go. in the end of the movie, emily gets revenge/closure on her death and failed marriage, and she fell in love with victor but learned not to be selfish and she let him go, then she moved on and was no longer trapped in the land of the dead.

I love this movie. I think the legendary Ray Harryhausen did the stop motion for both this movie and Nightmare before Christmas before he died. He is a famous Stop motion creature animator. He helped make many movies in the late 50s, 60s, 70s, til 1981. He did effects for Land of the Lost movies, Sinbad Pirate movies, and two great movies on Greek Mythology. 1963 Jason and the Argonauts and 1981 Clash of the Titans. You watch the Ray Harryhausen movies. They influence George Lucas and Peter Jackson.

"New arrival!" Is my favourite quote from this one 😂 Rant Warning ⚠️ A lot of people were happy that Victor ended up with Victoria. I honestly think that Victor and Emily would've been happier together, they had time to talk and get to know each other and fall in love, they even like the same things and Victor was willing to die for her. The only reason they weren't allowed to be together is because of Victoria, a married woman, crashing the wedding. I think it was incredibly selfish of Victoria to do what she did.

@razztastic

I never quite understood why so many people root for Emily. Yes, she very well deserves to be happy but what happened was a complete accident and Victor doesn't want to be with her. Why should he have stayed with Emily just to make *her* happy, all for her to (un)live with the fact that Victor doesn't truly want to be with her? He's a rightfully frightened young man who's put in a far more unfair situation, being pulled between the directions of a scorned cadaver whose motivations are innocent on paper but ultimately quite selfish, and a living girl who despite being arranged to marry actually enjoys the company of and *wants* to be with. It was quite literally love at first sight for Victor and Victoria, but an unfortunate event lead to a love triangle including a corpse that seems to think she has the claim to Victor's heart when that's just not the case. It's unfortunate, and it's a tale as old as time, but the only hearts won by tears and stories are the hearts of fools.
