If you want a large species of passionfruit, you need to add Passiflora quadrangularis (giant granadilla) or Passiflora maliformis (sweet calabash) to your collection. Neither of them taste like the various Passiflora edulis varieties you commonly see grown, but they are similar, as they are from the same genus. Edulis fruits will only get so big on their own without hybridization with one of their larger cousins. People should be a little wary of Facebook, Etsy, and eBay plant and seed sellers. Not all sellers on those sites are scammers (I have sold plants on eBay, for instance) but a not insubstantial percentage of sellers are. I recommend people patronize legitimate nurseries (of which there are many great ones out there) and/or sites such as Tropical Fruit Forum, which is run by fruit growers for other fruit growers.

The sugarcane/sorghum scam probably works out for the best in temperate climates. There will always be that one guy that tries to grow sugarcane here in britain (hi, that's me), but growing sorghum is so much easier in colder climates and still produces a fair amount of sugar as well as grain from one harvest.

I feel like the biggest scam in overall gardening comes from hardware stores. I bought a kumquat tree from OBI (one of the biggest hobbymarkets/hardware stores in my country), the tree had fruits on it which i found very intriguing. The tree started drying up a week or two after buying it, and eventually died. The reason why it probably died was because they usually put a very unhealthy amount of fertilizer into the tree, which forces the tree to fruit early. This is why i now only buy fruit trees from certified gardening centres that actually know what they are doing. The trees that have an awful load of fertilizer in them are often destined to die shortly after. Huge money grab IMO.

@@CricketsBayThey are passifloras so they are the same type of fruit. Sweet Granadilla is Passiflora Rigularis, Giant Granadilla is Passiflora Quadrangularis, and regular passion purple passion fruit or the bigger yellow ones often called Maracuja are Passiflora Edulis of different cultivars. So yes whatever their common name is, they are from the same familly like a raspberry, a blackberry and a brambleberry are all the same type of fruit with different colors and flavors.

My wife and I thoroughly watching today's vlog Mark. We both appreciate the time, effort and detail that you provide. We are from the Sydney area so it would be interesting to know if there's a sugar cane variety that will grow here too. As for passionfruits we are much better at growing them into vines as they never seem to bear any fruit 😢. We shall persevere as they say 😊.

i'm glad you made this video. there is a seller on amazon who advertises kojari melon seeds, but when i purchased them they turned out to be japanese squash plants. (huge difference in taste) several other people left comments that claimed the same thing. and after all the complaints, amazon continues to allow the seller to advertise. never buy seeds that are packaged in a clear plastic container. you want the paper envelopes, with all the pictures and writing, so you can see what you're getting.

Thank you for the info. I’ve been growing sorghum for years now because I’m in a moderate sub tropical in TN so no sugar cane. Makes me sad because I’d give anything to grow me some sugar cane. Can’t wait to see that vod!! I make my sorghum every year now and freeze enough for the whole year. Got me a little hand press and it takes a week every fall for one women to cut and press it all out and cook down the juice. It’s my annual intense cardio😂

Sometimes it isn't a scam exactly -- unless the feed store or distributor knows the seed is bad. I bought clover seed from a feed store. The seeds never grew. Others who had done the same made the same comment about that specific seed. All the rest of my seeds from there grew, so maybe it was just a one-off with that specific clover seed.

@Mark, let me tell you something! Don't bother to look for "giant passion fruits". Their name is Passiflora quadrangularis. We call them "granadillas" and yes, they are huge but they don't taste like maracuyas (passion fruit). You can make juice with them but they are rather bland. So enjoy the regular ones!! 😃

hey man, I love your videos! for the passion fruit to grow bigger, try hand pollinating and covering the plant with a plastic roof. Also... add in a high phosforus fertilizer and also each week give it plenty of Ca, B, Mg & Zinc. Im a comercial grower and the npk formula that works for me is 10-28-20. The giant passion fruit commercially is known as Maracuya Sol from Brazil. But if you do the fertilizing and hand pollination you should get a fuller fruit! Cuz if not, the bumble bee won't pollinate all of them and they won't fill up with pulp!

I have been bombarded on Snapchat commercials for seeds and they're literally fake flowers that aren't even the right species for what the name is...! I think one was a "paradise flower tree" and it was like a weeping willow with fake batchelor buttons in it!😮 Some of the pics looked more real-but pretty sure it was on Temu for sale.

Hey Mark, sage advice - thank you. Thoughts on the passion fruit, I live on the boarder of Northlakes, and my yellow passion fruit (which normally has huge fruit on it) isn’t producing its usual crop (and some are withering before they properly set seed). The large purple one, which is growing on a different fence line is doing MUCH better (about the size of the palm of my hand), even though it’s basically the same soil. 🤷‍♀️
