I live in Australia. Where I live in Queensland you are allowed to use pev . But only up to 25 km per hour. But in other states here you can get up to 3000 dollar fines . Not many governments have got this issue as a priority yet .

I took the bus to work and back the other day due to rain and lazy to cycle. I was ok in the morning, but on my way home, the bus ride took 1h 14m from leaving work to walking into my home. On my e-scooter, it takes me 28 minutes from leaving work to walking into my home. I can ride to work on my e-scooter because I don't sweat and smell upon arrival. This is why I ride an escooter.

@@salas..5686 Precisely. I haven't used public transport for work in ages.bi used to cycle and stopped because I'd sweat when I arrived. I took buses even though I drive and then I though fk this, bus is over an hour tlhome from work etc, so got a scooter and now my journey home has gone from 1h 18m to 28m. Amazing devices.

Do you think that if privately owned e scooters are allowed on the road legally, sometime in the future that 1 of 2 things will happen. 1 only e scooter with 250w and max possible speed for that scooter to be no higher then 15mph 2 we will be able to buy a bigger, more powerful e scooter, that’s much safer with suspension, good breaks, big air filled tyres etc and is capable of going 40/50 mph as long as we stick to the legal speed limit for scooters, while riding on public roads, regardless of if it’s 15mph 20mph etc? I hope my 2nd question actually becomes true and if scooter become legal, we should be able to buy the bigger safer more comfortable scooter. I mean all cars can go over 120mph and many upto and over 200mph and while you do see some people in cars driving way too fast, most people stick to the legal limits or there abouts and I think it would be same for scooter riders. Believe it or not but I honestly believe that most people would be too scared to go over 40mph on e scooter, let alone 60/70mph and I don’t blame them. Mine goes to 26mph and that is plenty fast enough. I reach top speed in about 5 seconds and 24-26mph almost feels like I’m flying. Like most people will go around 24-27 in a 20 , or around 35 odd in a 30 in cars but with most roads in London being 20mph , people will go a bit faster and I think government did it on purpose, knowing people will go a bit faster but because they set it to 20, it isn’t a problem. Because if the 20 mph roads was 30 then lots of people would be going 35-38 mph instead of 24-27 ish . even tho it don’t sound a lot more, it really is and is much more dangerous. Like I notice a huge speed increase when I go from say 17 mph to 22mph feels much much faster.

Yea it's honestly it's horrible, and currently in 2023 police are always and 100% on the look out to catch people on their electric scooters. Normal people that are just trying to get from point A to B.

exactly. ebikes are allowed, escooter should fall in the same class. meaning if it has top speed of 15mph then no licence needed, use the bike lanes or stay on the side of the road if there isn't one, and of course parks and mixed use pathways such as canal towpaths etc if it goes very fast than class it as a moped and require cbt, registration, insurance, etc. but for most people the basic ones will be enough and hassle free, cheap, cleaner, efficient way to get around for work or pleasure

Absolutely, enough is enough. Let’s go on protests, I own 4 scooters! Will bring them all! I want to see London in standstill all blocked by the scooters. Don’t mind the rentals as long as they are as addition to the legal private ones. 👍🛴

Hi, your point is totally correct, they are a push bike without pedals, the reason for this and eScooters not simply being grouped in with eBikes is that in 2016 the UK Government altered the type classification of eBikes, removing them from having any throttle fitted and making them pedal assist only. So if you simply grouped them with eBikes then you would either have to fit pedals to an eScooter making it essentially an eBike or allow throttles on eBikes again essentially making them low speed eMopeds, especially if you where able to remove the pedals, crank and chain. All this silly talk of grouping them with or comparing eBikes to eScooters is misleading, I personally want to keep eBikes as they are and simply add a new stand alone eScooter type classification, which is what the Goverment are going to 100% do at the end of the consultation, grouping in with eBikes would limit what could be done for eScooters in the future. Also eBikes are only 250watts which is not enough power for an eScooter without pedal assist, the new stand alone classification will be 350 watts which is much more usable. Best Regards A.

@@HDsharp I watched a vid few days ago and guy said it costs around £1 to unlock scooter and then it’s 20p per min. So an hour would cost around £11. Or you can rent for the whole day for around £10. Bit of a pisstake really. Just let us ride our own e scooters that are more then likely, much safer then rental and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Oh and there are 1000’s of stores on online, selling e scooters. Halfords is even advertising e scooters on tv. No mention of only allowed on private land. E scooters are also in ubereats tv adverts and there’s another advert where e scooter rider falls in to a bush.

They have, tentatively: Category Q You can drive 2-wheeled and 3-wheeled vehicles without pedals with: an engine size not more than 50cc if powered by an internal combustion engine a maximum design speed of no more than 25km/h (15.5mph) This category also includes trial e-scooters.

The classification exists, and has done for years (Cat Q). The issue is eScooters don't meet roadworthiness rules and can't yet be insured. Insurance companies can't insure them because they can't insure an unroadworthy vehicle. What is needed is a new type for type approval of eScooters. This would enable regulation of the safety of these vehicles. Specifying minimum construction and lighting requirements.

@@jamiemorris7688 Hey, have just posted a comment further highlighting what you are saying here, I am totally sure they will legalised and given there own distinct vehicle type classification we just have to be patient for a little bit longer. You are also totally correct about safety features, as the Goverment are also conducting a second none public research consultation which most people have missed, already looking into ways to make all personal eVehicles including eBikes safer, there is already a hefty list of requirements, including minimum wheels size, lighting, brake lighting and braking systems, along with minimum structural strengths, this will be published in December of this year with its findings not only implemented into the new eScooter classification but also into the eBike classification, essentially all personal eVehicles will have to have a minimum 16" wheel size, better braking systems and a specified amount if structural integrity, which is not such and thing as there are some really shabby and dangerous eScooters being sold out there at the moment. All for legalisation but also want safe eScooters to be sold, not a big ask. Best Regards A.

The other option is for people to not use something they know is illegal on public land... There are other laws I don't agree with but if I break them and get caught I expect to get the punishment. If you can't do the time don't do the crime, even if you don't agree that it should be a crime.

Great, but not illegally and uninsured! If it's used on the road it needs to be licenced and insured to protect everyone else. Who is going to pay for my car repair if one of these things bangs into me? Probably me!

E,-scooters are often ridden in an unsafe manner with no lights, no PPE, with dark clothing and at over the speed limit. Of course they should be confiscated. The six points on a driving licence is very fair.

You may see it as draconian, but it's exactly the same law that's been in place for decades. You cannot legally use an uninsured, unregistered and untaxed motor vehicle on public roads or pavements.

Look at all that space on the path and also it is not busy, I live in a area that is not a busy area also there is a few places with wide paths, now what is logical about cops fining or and given them points if the e scooter or bicycle user rides on the path or and road (safely) it makes no sense, seriously the #government need to sort that bs road and path law, is is ridiculous. I stopped riding a bicycle as I had some old guy tell me off for riding on the road and another time a p.c.s.o told me off, it is pathetic as first thing I was riding on wide paths second thing the paths were not busy 3rd thing I was riding safely. So the government has made a dumb law, that means people are getting more unhealthy as they stopped using a bicycle or and e scooter. Seriously e scooter users ame cyclists have to deal with many obstacles, such as; pedestrians walking on cycle paths, pot holes on the road, bad motor drivers, gutters on the side of thd road, animals, branches. I use to ride on the road ane path I went where I felt it was safest, that is all that should matter, pedestrians and cyclists, e scooter users just all need to be observant of each other. I think aslong as cyclists ane e scooter users understand safety, also they have a safe vehicle, that is all thay matters. The only people who moan about cyclists and e scooter users is cops who are being controlled by the government, and people who have been in a accident because of a e scooter user or cyclist, or as they heard in the media or from people or a person they knew. Yet it is a dumb mindset, it is as dumb as saying (all men cheat) or (most men cheat) so law should not be made because of a few idiots who say it is bad.

I've been riding a non E-scooter for like 3 years when I was studying pretty much driving wherever the hell I wanted to drive and nobody cared. I think the problem is that many young people are rather reckless with e-scooters, which sucks, but then again you don't punshi responsible drivers for unresponsible ones anywhere else eitehr do you..

No pursuit policy for Bikes, especially if they are in transit van. Kids on motorbikes take massive risks. Bottom.line is while it's not right escooters for now are illegal people know this so if they get points it's no fault but their own

I live close to a primary school and park regularly see these idiots racing past without any regard for the safety of young children. The police should re-examine their priorities.

@@markjlewis while I agree with what you say re the quad Bikes etc people should also not be riding illegal escooters either. A kid (14) on his way to school on the pavement knocked my 72 year old mother over and she ended up with a broken hip and in hospital for weeks. Parents and responsible adults should not be riding them until they are regulated and made legal as they are a mechanically propelled vehicle in law currently

People get less points for using a mobile while driving, our UK laws and punishments are wildly chaotic.

the six points are for no insurance, if there are multiple traffic offences then the one attracting the most points....in this case no insurance its the six that are applied. the court could make it up to 8 points if they feel it necessary. if its a driver thats less than 2 years on a full licence then its revoked to provisional by the dvla. they may also be disqualified if they tot to 12 points. also dont drink and scooter even with a hire one as you may find yourself failing a breath test and grt disqualified. no insurance is strict liability. no insurance = 6 points minimum

@@michaelhartley11 It's an odd one then, if they saying you need insurance then how would they police that without registration of the scooter. Where I work I see many scooters, most of them riding dangerously, a couple have high speed E-bikes over 30mph, constantly down the wrong way of the one way system cutting in front of traffic etc, and they're in the town everyday never a copper around though.

@@benjones4365 the scooter needs to be type approved, tested as per Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval Manual. then it can be issued with V5 and a reg number. then you will need insurance. and taxed though this will be £0 as its ev. so if none of these then rider is guilty of no reg. no ins. no tax. no lights as per regs. no MoT no helmet. however points are only awarded for the most serious offence in this case ,no insurance. the other offences if charged can be separately fined or the no insurance fine increased and classed as totality. or they may be classed as no separate penalty and just noted. the scooter is classed as a motor vehicle like an electric moped.

Did you get your scooter back

Rentals are legal as the machines all have registration tags and GPS so can be tracked. Also, part of your hire charge covers insurance and you have to show that you have, at least, a Provisional Licence before you can hire one. So, a lot of difference!

I saw something where that was basically said and a copper basically stated that you aren't really breaking any major laws by riding on pavement as compared to riding them on the road.

I don't have one but I have seen alot of wreck less teens just whizz straight in front of my car and others out of no where. No lights/ reflectors and total disregard for other road users. This is where the main problem lies with them I think, no registration plates and no road skills needed for anyone to own one

The rental system is part of a trial for legalising them. The government has shifted the risk from individuals to business.

@@grs688 the government has made a concession to big business that wants to expand from continental Europe into the UK because 💸💸💸 and because British democracy is a complete superficial facade they got away with giving corporations more freedoms than individuals. There is zero reason for the trial to disallow private scooters, if someone is on an e-scooter it makes no difference to road safety who owns it. Private e-scooters don't get strewn around pavements like the scourge that are hire scooters.

If you read my post below, you will see that this will go no where because of existing presidents set around the very blurry type classifications we have here, but I am 100% sure they will be fully legalised in a watered down and much safer format by Easter next year, which is not to long to go in the bigger picture, Best Regards A.

Like you say if your riding on the pavement they can't add 6 points to your licence. Not sure what happens with the £300 fine and confiscation.

But hit someone, and knock them over, and the results could be VERY different. You could be looking at a claim for personal injury, distress, loss of earnings etc. The claim could easily run into thousands....££££££ You ok with that? Over 50 pedestrians have already been injured by these things being used on pavements......

Hey Kevin, Perhaps you should read my slightly more informed posts above, out of the gate, I can tell you that a Jogger would probably not have collided with my nearly 5 year old daughter in the first place and even if they did would probably not have broken her ribs or given her a mild concussion and certainly not fractured a collerbone like the other 5 year old that has just been hit by an eScooter racing along the pavement. Also bicycles, push scooters, eBikes and eScooters will never be legalazied to ride on the pavement, period. As stated I am fully behind them being legalised and they will be next Easter but they will never be legalazied to ride on pavements. Sorry to burst your bubble on this and what is actually coming, but we all have to start thinking in more practical terms of what will actually be legalized next year, no seated position, 350watts constant power and s 15.5Mph cut out, but can assure you 200% that they will never be legalized to be legally ridden on the UK pathways. @@n1msu Specific legislation exists permitting use of Electronically Power Assisted Cycles within certain power and max speed limits. Twist and go electric bikes are illegal unless they meet the requirements of the Road Traffic Act. By the way riding a bicycle on a pavement/sidewalk intended for pedestrians has been illegal since the 19th century. If and when the law is changed or personal electric vehicles are redesigned to meet current regulations your wish to use a scooter should remain a wish. Some may wish to drive on the right hand side of the road but until the law changes good order can only be maintained by obeying the law which says driving (in the UK, Irland etc) must be be undertaken on the left side of the road.

@@kyrengorkian issue is that police wouln't know what type of bicycle it is. A man in birmingham during last few days has died and his gf who was a pillion is seriously injured. Shame this lad passed away but it's this recklessness and not appreciating the dangers of using a road that caused this. This incident will wreck the progress of private e scooter ownership if the bufoons in government have their way...

One small problem. E scooters are classed as motor vehicles. Bicycles are not. It is perfectly legal to use a bicycle on public roads, although not on a footpath or pavement.

@@Brian-om2hh yes I know, I have heard they might be making another category, the way I see it if cyclists are able to go faster than a 15 mph e scooter, surly they should be allowed on the cycling path atleast. Because the issue is if they go only 15 mph the legal limit, well supposedly the legal limit, then they will be an inconvenience to higher speed vehicles.

Have you thought of getting a bicycle or is that too inconvienient?

@@MrVaultTec yes, but my issue is partly storage both ends. Unfortunately at work cycle storage space is limited and bikes are constantly being stolen or stripped of parts, whilst at home I simply don’t have the space. The scooter is so simple to store indoors. Moreover, I actually prefer using a scooter, feel safer and not arriving at work in a sweaty state.

@@KarlTimmins This is definitely an issue. I do blame employers for not creating secure storage for cycles or wash facilities to encourage commuting by bike. In regards to home storage, foldup bicycles maybe the solution to that. Even though you prefer using an escooter they're still illegal unfortunately so you're really riding them at your own risk. I actually was gonna buy an eMove cruiser until I did some research and found out that privately owned escooters were currently illegal so I didn't buy it - not worth the risk especially as I seem to get stopped by police a bit too regular anyway so I'm not gonna give them any more reason to.

Yes and no. Some police won't mention pavement and give the full fine.

@@TheLondonCyclist you have a point. When I was stopped (blue flashing lights and siren) I was on a pavement mounted cycle way and was told the road included the pavement! But by that score my inline skates are illegal because "carriages" are not allowed on the pavement (1835 law). I wonder what experiences people are having with police and cycle ways full of "hacked" electrically assisted bicycles?

@@phantombigballs8165 Unfortunately, law breaking isn't down the discretion. A broken law is a broken law, especially when it's done in abundan on a daily basis. All parents should be fine on the spot for pushing carriages on the pavements.

They're not classified as bikes or motorcycles, which would require registration. So they are not road legal, simple as that. No pig/goat/dog drawn carts either.

@@hasan_z I'm in France, they are limited in speed to 25km/h and not allowed on pavements, otherwise, not registered and they are fine.

I think the reason is far simpler. Nobody in government has any personal (financial) interest in dealing with it. E-scooter users don't have a lobby. And... legislation on PLEVs is complicated. Which means boring, tedious, can't be arsed.

Appreciate that the law is the law... However, this would not be the first time in history that the law is outpaced by technological change. Thing is, it is now eight years later (modern e scooters appeared in 2014) and the technology has taken hold in every city in the UK. Also worth considering that all our global competitors are already gaining the benefits of legalising micromobility as e-scooters are legal throughout Europe and the Americas. I would suggest that you consider the real damage excessive car and van use is causing us in the UK and the net benefits to be gained if we reduce our reliance on heavy, polluting and inefficient transport.

@@shaffermarkshaffer Agreed. I also see wisdom in the Insurance aspect but I doubt its enforceable for many riders. Some riders round my way are youngsters or out of work and probably can't or won't pay. An enforced additional charge at purchase, this funds a nationwide basic insurance against personal injury from a rider.
