Flair to help prevent lightning hitting you put a rubber liner on the edges of your boat, bc lightning doesn’t strike rubber. I learned that from my dad, bc we were fishing on big saline creek in Deville Louisiana and a lightning storm came out of nowhere we felt a shock and all of our rods were humming and a bolt of lightning struck 10 ft away from our boat when we was going across the lake trying to get back to land and the next day we went and got some rubber liner and put it on our boat and then we were out on the lake again before hurricane Harvey hit landfall in Texas and we wasn’t paying attention to what time the storm was coming, and we got caught in it and we never felt the static or the shock.

Graphite Rods are like lightning rods. They pick up and draw the static electricity in the air into the rod. I've had them start humming pretty loud, and I just lay them down until the storm passes. And if lightning did hit you, it would most likely kill you. A guy I know here in Florida was out on a ranch working some cows and he took a direct lightning hit and it went through his body and blew his feet off, but didn't kill him. He had bad burns on his arm and shoulder where it entered his body. Lightning isn't anything to play with, It's like the Power Ball lotto, The odds of hitting it are crazy, but if you do beat those odds it will change your life forever! :))

We had lightning come thru in Mn lastnight I've never seen and heard before. It was so energized you could hear it humming and buzzing in the sky after each spiderweb bolt that was non stop. The noise was incredible. There was no pause between the thunder..it was a continuous rumble, hum, crazy electric display for 15 min straight. Dead still..no rain..just bizarre and cool AF!! You did great by dropping that rod! Your response time was perfect. Alot of ppl get lock hands if it's too intense. Great Vid and..learning experience Flair! Rock On!!

Fun fact: it is actually not advised to stand next to tall pine trees or trees with sap. If they do get struck the sap gets very hot and can burn you very bad to the point where it can kill you.

Close one but not uncommon for aluminum boats. From what I heard. Lightning probably hit the water nearby. Your boat then conducted a charge & sent it through you cuz of the rod at a lower voltage shock. Just imagine if you were in the water. 😶

Hello, Meteorology major here. There was no lightening strike anywhere around you. What you felt was your rod getting charged up with positive particles when got a hardcore zap. The static sound you hear is the charge being built up in the rod. What most people don’t know is that the lightning ( seconds before it leaves the cloud) knows where it’s going to touchdown (or not touchdown). You just happened at that time with those conditions to be a great cloud to ground connection. You on an open lake (higher than what’s immediately around you) and holding an amazing conductor was a perfect spot for the bolt to make the cloud to ground connection. Aka you felt the build up of all those charged particles and got zapped hard from that but that’s about the same amount of zap you would get if you stuck your finger in an outlet (which can be very powerful). You were actually very lucky that happened because that caused you to drop the rod. Very possible that if you continued to hold on to that pole you would have been the ground connection for that bolt and it would have directly hit the rod and you would have been killed before you even could blink an eye. Lightening is no joke at all. 99.9999% of people who get a direct bolt and live to tell about it will tell you that their hair stood up right before they were hit. That’s their body (and the air in contact with them) being charged up to make the cloud to ground connection. In your case it wasn’t your body being charged it was your pole. Glad you decided to get off the water and got on land. Stay safe man.

That static/noise is common when being around a storm. You did the right thing by dropping the rod. That noise is the precursor to an actual strike. Same thing happened to me in my kayak, I looked behind me at my rod in the holder and my line was floating in the air. If it happens put your rods down flat, stay low and get off the water.

You felt the the shock of the lightning from your line being in the water. If you were directly hit with a lighting bolt you would more than likely been knocked out, or in intense pain. I watched my Uncle get struck by lightning and it knocked him out and he had intense internal damage from the high wattage of energy entering his body but he is all good now! Glad you weren't directly hit because it is definitely deadly! Nice video btw!

This same thing happened to me kayak fishing in the outer banks when I was spekel trout fishing but I kept on fishing even though I knew it was starting to storm, I didn't even know what hit me but trust me it hurt

Flair, as a storm chaser I have seen this happen before. It is very common for lightning to strike well ahead of a thunderstorm, especially during late spring and summer in the plains region (including Nebraska, Texas, etc). You may not even see rain or dark clouds but lightning could still strike. Because you are typically the highest point in a open surface, (i.e. on a boat on a lake) at the first point you hear any thunder you should be on the lookout or even get off the lake. Also, make sure to pay attention to local forecasts (New Stations/NWS are the best). This type of lightning is typical with severe weather and could strike over 60 miles away from the thunderstorm. This actually happened earlier this spring in Kansas.

I’m glad you’re safe but something i would suggest rubber sole shoes and dark clouds formation tend to draw lightning quicker so get off the water especially when there’s white caps. Be safe.

I had lighting strike the ground right in front of my feet when I was younger. I was in my garage and it was storming so I stepped out & shot my pellet gun & stepped back in & it was a loud ass boom, crack sound. It flashed literally right in front of my eyes and hit the ground like 3 feet in front of me. (I was stupid for shooting)

The Storm Alert app has a great lightning tracker. It will alert you when it gets 10miles or closer. I always keep it active when storms in the area and on the water.
